Wooo....new Stargate!
by Gord Lacey (All reviews) 5/19/2005
Stargate: Atlantis is the spin-off of the wildly successful Stargate
SG-1.
When SG-1 discovers what they believe to be the remnants of the Lost
City of the Ancients - the originators of the Stargates - Stargate
Command launches an investigation. A new team of explorers, headed by
civilian Dr. Elizabeth Weird, travels to the distant Pegasus Galaxy,
where they discover an advanced but deserted city on the ocean floor,
a group of nomadic humans, and a deadly enemy that feeds on fear!
MGM has released the pilot episode of Atlantis for fans who can't
wait for the unannounced season set, along with some decent bonus
features. I hadn't seen the show before, but I love SG-1, and the
spinoff is just as great.
Video
Atlantis doesn't use film like SG-1; they've switched to shooting
with HD cameras. The result is a crisper picture, which can cause
problems. There are a few scenes early in the pilot that exhibit
jaggy lines because of the crispness, but I didn't notice anything
later on in the show. I'm sure it took them a bit of getting used to
shooting with the new cameras, and director Martin Wood mentions this
in the commentary track. Everything else with the picture looks
beautiful, except for a few scenes with a bit of video noise.
Atlantis is a beautifully shot show, and it looks great on DVD.
**snippity doo-dah**
Summary
Spinoffs are hard to do. You risk cloning the original series (CSI),
or you create something that's so different from the original that
the shows just share a name. Atlantis is able to be different from
the original, yet still retain the feel of the franchise. I can't
wait to watch the rest of the season.
There were a few things missing from this release. Bloopers are
mentioned a few times in the commentary track, and I wish we could
have seen them. The other thing missing is more obvious; the other 18
episodes. I'm not a fan of releasing the pilot episode; I want the
full season! It's a shame they couldn't have released it before the
second season begins in July.
