    In Defence of Little Sites

Do you own a little site - ever had it ignored, or snubbed by a bigger site, or had some one basically say your site sucks and never offer constructive suggestions for improvement? Maybe your site is for amusement, or just has pictures, or its educational, or you run it to suport a charity or a community organisation, and you've been dismayed by other large hub sites ignoring your requests for reciprocal links or additions to a web ring or a link list?

Well this thread is your chance to vent about it!

However as well as venting I would like you to consider this?

One of the major reasons I ran Birthday Boost was to get feedback and find out why people support certain sites - no I didnt run it just to increase my hit count. (Though many thanks to those folk who did visit) People seem to prefer entertainment over educational resources and many forum or site moderators seem to feel they should only have to link to bigger sites or their friends sites only.

Folks please whether you're a fellow Gemini or not, or just a disgruntled owner of a "little site", after you have finished expressing your frustration, please consider doing this : whether the site belongs to a friend or enemy, whether it's for a charity or community organisation, or it's a new site that needs polish, whether it provides amusement or educational resources, please add pick out such a site at random, and add a link or banner and give them support!

Vent folks but then go do something constructive and help!

and a final thanks to those folk who did visit?

Maybe we should start a "Little Sites" web ring?

Hi Neith, would it be an idea for you to put a link to your site in your sig? I know that a lot of people around here do that, and speaking for myself I've visited a fair few sites via a sig link.

I can't say that my site has ever been bashed, but then, I don't think it's a high traffic area and it's definitely a fluff site without any serious educational content so I dunno how it COULD be bashed unless someone simply hated my stories.

Then again, even if it did get bashed, I wouldn't do anything to change it. Shadowlight Industries is basically just an online archive for my stories, no frills whatsoever. You want frills, find another site.

I don't understand WHY anyone would bash a site unless the factual content of it was wrong or unless the material was objectionable. White Pride or book burning or child pornography or Sam/Jack ship...

Nieth, you hadn't been on gaters and then all of a sudden you show up just to post about your site:
          http://gaters.net/showthread.php?t=7025
As much as you tried to hide all with your Rhetoric it is only really a wish to get your hit count up. Before you go bashing me. I sat on your page and refreshed it 4 times and gave your hit counter an extra 4 points.

If you had been visiting gaters frequently you would have known that the Mods had shut down any threads started to simply advertise their website.

One such member, has approached the mods and asked if they could start a thread on a website of his.

However this definitely brings a new problem to light. If members are only allowed to post links in the SPAM thread then it may not be seen by a majority of others as this thread is full of random crap and i myself do not frequent there.

It's a good thing for a forum not to promote random spamming by people. We have had people post weird threads, which is blatant spamming. I know if I was the mod in charge I wouldn't have closed it myself. but you can't deny it's not an advertisement as thats what all of these threads are like.

Gaters.net would close down any SPAMMY link thread like that whtehr it was for your site or for my small Troy site or for some big site like NBA.COM unless you asked the moderators for permission to post about your site.

A good way to make it less spammy is to ask for feedback on your website. That way you are promoting discussion on your site and not just saying hey, lets get my hitcount up and get people out there finding my site.

Indiana do I know you under another name?

the starting post for this thread was intended as a rebuttal of self interest

            please go reread it

as I said to certain moderators that policy wasnt in the FAQ

            enuff said

i really dont want to talk about gaters
cos of the even ruder behaviour in private messages by certain people

ps just cos I dont post regularly doesnt mean I havnt been lurking

what I'm suppose to spend all day online ?!?

Shadowmaat sorry it took me so long to get back to you - Ild couldnt access the server and the other day when I did manage to respond to Madelaine and mean to answer you NEXT when I hit send the server logged me out instead!

I can only spend a limited time online - business email comes first
then web editing and then forums etc

bashing - its not just sniping and snubbing that concerns me

I dont think its intentional in all cases but I have noticed a shift away from OPEN interactivity in linking - some folk seem to be suing a HUB model rather than an OPEN expanding web structure in their links which concerns me and then there's the folk who just repeat all their friends banners and never add anything new

or never have charity banners ?

folks we have to remember forums and web sites are not cosy little private clubs - forums are central open public spaces which act as a transit and linking space to a larger network of streets and lanes and other spaces - they're all suppose to interact -

We need to always be meanful of the need to maintain interactivity

I'm going to henceforth as a policy add animal rescue charities to sassy gate and

oh !!!! totally off topic I found two wonderful new sites to add to Real Egypt

off my rostrum / pulpit etc and back to other stuff

I'm trying to code a table frame for some gifs

if anyone needs What's New title gifs watch for an announcement next week!

Interactivity is good for the NET!!!

Why not just include a link in your sig instead of devoting a whole post (or posts) to promoting something? Or work it into a relevant conversation? "Speaking of rats, I just updated my own Secret of NIMH site. Y'know, NIMH? With the intelligent rats? It's called Your Site Here. Not much there yet, but I do what I can and hey, did you know Dom DeLuise provided the voice of Jeremy the crow?" Or something like that. Or maybe more like "I read this great interview with Corin over on the Corin Nemec Site where he talks about SG-1 and Atlantis. Kinda depressing, really, but still a good read."

I generally prefer the stealth advertising of leaving links in my sig and letting people wonder what they're about. If I write a fic I'm particularly proud of I might post to let people know about it, but most of the time I don't bother. Unless I'm really bored and feel a compulsive need to post something (which is usually right after a particularly long server crash).

I am also on gaters.net under the same name (Indy for short though).

I rarely get a chance to post here. There's too much for me to read and feel if i were to post would get swept away.

I figured it had to be intentional. You can see your sig, so you gotta know what it looks like. Could be something highly subliminal that we just haven't caught on to yet.

To be fair, if a forum / website owner is happier when their forum or website is their cosy little place, there's nothing wrong with that.

And sometimes the reason they link only to a few sites is because if they linked to every relevant site in existence the Link section would be larger than the webpage. The line has to be drawn somewhere, and since the webpage owner is paying for the bandwidth it doesn't seem unreasonable to me if they choose to put their few favourite sites on one side of that line, and everything else on the other.
