Sit in on a very personal chat with <I>Atlantis</I>'s Lt. Aiden Ford, as Rainbow talks candidly about his departure from the show -- and why he thinks it's one of the best things to happen to his character.

Is it just me or does it sound like he's making the best of a bad deal?

Awesome interview!! I know this was done prior to the Vancouver Con and yet Rainbow's attitude was just the best here AND in person. Thank you for reminding me just what an incedibly humble, yet optimistic young man he is. :D

I will be forever honored I had the opportunity to meet this young man and I will sing his praises as often as I can :D HE deserves it

Excellent, excellent interview, David! Hmm... That Rainbow sure sounds like a good guy, doesn't he? Anyway, I'm happy that he likes the direction his character is taking, and that he's okay with what's being done. When I first heard they were reducing Ford to "recurring", my enthusiasm for season 2 was somewhat reduced - I felt it was way too soon to write the character off after just one season. I mean, SG-1 managed to keep the regular cast intact for five years, which allowed them to develop each character over time and I was dissapointed that Ford would not be given the same chance. But with these comments, I am hopeful that this may actually not be such a bad thing, neccessarily... I'm starting to get excited again! :)

I think Rainbow has thee cutest laugh!! Well next to Michael Shanks, but Rainbow sounds like a really nice guy and I love his laugh!

I like Rainbow's laugh better. :P Guy sounds like he could use another hug, though. Guess this one'll have to be virtual, though. *checks to make sure no one is watching* ((Rainbow)) :P

He sounds so wonderfully natural and laid back, too. Love that. And I'm glad to know he knows that we love him, here, even if some of us weren't as initially vocal about it as we could have been...

I had only heard through the other Mods that Rainbow occasionally poked around the Web, including GateWorld and GateWorld Forum, but when I sat down and talked with him it was phenomonal. Because of all the stuff that had been happening with the Ford character he just let it all go, and it was probably the most incredible interview I've had with one of the guys of the show. Other than Amanda Tapping (of course), Rainbow's it. He's as genuine as they come.

David - will you have anything else with Rainbow? Since the Convention?
He really is just a flat out joy to talk with AND listen to. I will really look forward to following his career

Maybe everyone will have more with Rainbow. He just signed up in GateWorld Forum. (And don't worry, I just talked on the phone with him - it's the genuine article) Aptly enough, he's under "Rainbow Sun Francks."

We could be the crazy groupies that follow his band around the country. ;) Everyone else would be going, "WE LOVE YOU, RAINBOW!!" and we could be going, "WE LOVE YOU, FORD!!" and really confuse the hell out of everyone. It'd be like our own little cultish in-joke. :P

ETA: And yes to the acting, too, of course. But it's a bit harder to follow someone around for that. :D

Rainbow Sun Francks? What a strange choice for a username... ;)

There's a spot on the Sulky Thread all warmed up and ready for him. :D

This interview just reinforces what I posted on the Rainbow/Ford Thunk thread about what a class act this guy is. I'm glad that despite his recurring status for next year that he's getting something challenging as an actor for said recurring role. And I'll continue to follow his career even if (sniffle, sniffle) it's no longer on Atlantis.

I stand corrected. Sny-Whip, not Rainbow. ;) That still cracks me up. Now I can thunk for Snidely as well as Muttley. :D

Awesome interview! It really is lovely to see someone that genuine, it makes liking a show that much cooler. As intrigued as I am by Ford's new direction, the thing I'm worried about missing is that as underdeveloped as he's been, Ford's kinda seemed like the heart of Atlantis to me (i.e. his role in Letters from Pegasus). But it's nice to see how he responded to it, not to mention that he's poking around here.

Shadow, is his Cabana Boy status already sealed? :D

He's been near the top of the list since the beginning; he ain't leaving it any time soon. ;)

Sounds like a top bloke, that fella. It's too bad his character has copped it hard. There's very little in the role of a full soldier in SG:A, with Sheppard making tactical decisions all the time (despite the fact the guy is a rotorhead and looks to have had very little of the intense and long Spec-For training ;)). It's too bad, because commanders always talk with a confidant, like an ADC, S-3, XO or 2IC, and it would have been nice to see some disagreements in approach, as this too occurs IRL.

I just saw "Runner" - Australian free to air. Possibly speculating on the past but anyway...

I really like what has happened with the new Ford. He's the most interesting character now, I reckon.

By seeing him in the first season, we got to know/like him but here is where the character goes somewhere really interesting. We feel some loss and realise that Ford had a good life, friends etcetera and has lost a lot.

If however, after two or three seasons of pre-wraith-eye Ford, he had the same plot path it would be too upsetting, and would strike people as mean-spirited. Like if Angel from Buffy went bad (tick) and killed Willow and Xander (cross).

Lastly, if Ford had started off wraith-eye the character would be like Ronon. We wouldn't care so much but we'd have the mystery of what he was like before the dark change.

He also gives the other characters a lot more dimension - we've seen how the other characters care about him, how dedicated they are to get him back - alive.

I only just saw Ronan this episode (and thus figured out that Ford was going - because it's difficult having two dark characters trying to out-Raistlin each other!) He seems to add a lot of interest too.

I think SG-Atlantis needed to get a dark character on board, it's more survival horror and grim battle than SG1s mixture of battle, exploration, politics, freeing of the oppressed, debunking false gods etc.

Feeling very optimistic about seasons two onward...

Matt
