Television : Stargate Franchises Wrap Seasons In High Style!

Between getting a new franchise of the ground, and sparking new life into the original, the creative teams between ‘Stargate: SG-1’ and ‘Stargate: Atlantis’ have produced thrilling, and for the most part, smart SF adventures for both. Tonight’s season finales [beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, Sci Fi] find each series with a totally different tone – both of which work well.
For its eighth-season finale, ‘Moebius, Part 2’, ‘Stargate: SG-1’ wraps a two-part time travel tale that is mostly successful – part one had the gang going back to the time of Ra to secure a ZPM and getting stuck there, with the ensuing timeline changing in unexpected ways – Jack never returned to the Air force because the Stargate was never discovered; Dr. Daniel Jackson was stuck in a job teaching English as a second language; Dr. Samantha Carter was a proofreader for others’ work [and getting her own stolen along the way]. Teal’c was still Apophis’ Prime.
**snippity doo-dah**
There’s something in ‘Moebius, Part 2’ for everyone. The final scene echoes an earlier event that should please diehard shippers, and is a fitting way to leave off as the series prepares for a number of changes next season.
Grade: A-
For ‘Stargate: Atlantis’, the first season has been pretty much excellent – except for a mid-season cliffhanger that required every member of the regular cast to be stupid in order for it to work. The season-ending cliffhanger almost makes up for that.
**snippity doo-dah**
Overall, ‘The Siege, Part 2’ works because of the performances and the crisp direction by Martin Wood. It could have been better, but it does leave us with a really nifty cliffhanger that, one can but hope, will be resolved intelligently [the overall quality of the first season really demands it].
Grade: B
