Words can't describe how strange this looks, it looks like a kids sci-fi/cartoon noir action film, only it has Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law and Angelina Jolie. Oh, and for some reason the trailer uses the Stargate SG1 theme music, which sounds so incredibly out of place.

im looking forward to it. it looks really good. its a modern movie in the style of the noir, over the top scifi movies of the 20s and 30s. to often today scifi movies have to be believeable as something that could be replicated in real life and i think that that has weakened science fiction as a genre for storytelling. this movie is gonna be awesome!

From the FilmScoreMonthly.com FAQ:
(Sky Captain trailer music)
"Q: What was the music I heard in a trailer to an upcoming film?

A: Motion picture trailers today are almost always produced independent of the actual films they are advertising. Certain pieces of music have become very popular amongst these trailer production companies for their ability to "sell" a movie and convey a lot of emotion in a short period of time -- hence they are frequently used in trailers to unrelated pictures."

In that FAQ (in further answer to that Q) they have a link to this site: http://www.soundtrack.net/trailers which has a list of movies and what music (both original and not) was used in which trailers.

Would it shock you to know that, according to the site, some of the early trailers for Stargate included music from Bram Stoker's Dracula? I did some searching and found the following site:
http://www.stargate-commando.de/download/dlvideo.html

Download "Stargate trailer II" (prepare.zip) and listen closely to the background music. I'm not dedicated enough to download Dracula and compare, but whatever music was used, it wasn't from Stargate...

Yeah my friend and I went to see hellboy and saw that trailor and we both started yelling about angelina jolie killing stargate. A riot ensued and we narrowly escaped getting kicked out by hiding behing a jabba the hutt lookalike.

From what I read in a magazine (the name of which escapes me at this moment), the entire movie was shot against a blue screen. Everything is computer generated except for the actors...and the accents. :D That might explains why it looks so strange. I mean, aside from the whole flying robots thing.

This is also not the first time I've heard Joel Goldsmith's score for a trailer. I can't place the other times, though.

Didn't really like Hellboy, though I have to say that the characters are infinitely cooler than the movie. Abe Sapien rules.

Anyone seen this yet? Reviews?

Every time I see the trailer and see Angelina Jolie as "Franky Cook" I think of Honor Harrington, eye patch and all. Anyone else think of Honor?

The movie got a terrible review in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Director Kerry Conran flies Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow into Sky Captain's wild blue-screen yonder

By Ian Spelling

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is one of the most audacious and ambitious films to come along in a while. A retro SF adventure with a visual look that's part comic book come to life, part animation and part live action, Sky Captain spins a raucous tale that follows the exploits of Joe Sullivan (Jude Law), better known as Sky Captain.

It's 1939, and he's a heroic fighter pilot whose skills, smarts and élan come in handy when a scientist plots the planet's demise, sending in swarms of robots and kidnapping elite scientists. Also caught up in the action are Dex (Giovanni Ribisi), Joe's buddy and gadget guy; Franky (Angelina Jolie), a one-eyed aviatrix and former paramour of Joe's; and Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow), a fashion-savvy and ambitious newspaper reporter who's hot on the scientist story and even hotter for Joe. In fact, they used to date, but now seem to prefer trading barbs that can barely mask their attraction.

Anyway, other than the actors, none of it—the zeppelins, Shangri-la, Radio City Music Hall, the robots—is actually real. Writer-director Kerry Conran shot his actors against blue screens and digitally animated all the rest. Law, Paltrow, Ribisi, Conran and Bai Ling, who plays a mysterious woman aptly referred to as Mystery Woman, recently sat down to talk with Science Fiction Weekly about Sky Captain, which opens Sept. 17.

I was waiting for a movie to start on Turner Classic Movies and there was a preview for Sky Captain. My Mum and I were watching it and talking until we both stopped at the same time and went 'Oh, my God!'

And then we laughed and it was great. :D lol

The Stargate music gets used in a LOT of movies. It's also in Time Machine, Polar Express and... er... I think another one, too.

Didn't much care for Sky Captain, though. Interesting cinematic effect, but the storyline was meh.

You need to get out more, then. ;)

Music in movies gets recycled ALL THE TIME. Not just Stargate, EVERYTHING. Any piece that sets a certain mood. I know I've heard bits from The Abyss in a couple of places. And I think ET, too.

edit: from the Film Score Monthly FAQ (http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/features/FAQ1.asp):

Q: What was the music I heard in a trailer to an upcoming film?

A: Motion picture trailers today are almost always produced independent of the actual films they are advertising. Certain pieces of music have become very popular amongst these trailer production companies for their ability to "sell" a movie and convey a lot of emotion in a short period of time -- hence they are frequently used in trailers to unrelated pictures.

Film scores like Come See the Paradise, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, Rudy and Hoffa -- and classical pieces like the ubiquitous "O Fortuna!" from Carmina Burana -- are several notable examples of pieces of music which have been taken out of their original context and used over and over for different marketing campaigns.

I thought it was fun. =0) I can't say that the storyline was predictable because as far as I was concerned it wasn't. I enjoyed the laughs and effects. I'm sure there are other storylines that are better but SKWT holds a special place in my heart.

I was the posterboy for a Sky Captian fan before it came out. I loved the film. Enjoyed the visuals and was saddened that it wen't by unnoticed. But then, i'm a fan of obscure fun little films like Sky Captain.

I remember when the movie Dragon came out about the life of Bruce Lee. I thought the music was just terrific. Then I heard the same music in about 5 other movies or TV shows over the next 5 years. I'm guessing the author just doesn't sign an exclusive and he can sell it again .......

I thought Sky Captain rocked, big time! I've got a soft spot for the whole "retro-future" sort of thing - the old Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers serials used to be on TV first thing on a saturday morning when I was a sprog.

The whole movie making process, the green-screens and minmal sets thing, now means that there can now be a proper Dan Dare movie - and I nominate Jude Law to play Dan. :cameron:

*sits back and awaits the inevitable question "Who the [expletive] is Dan Dare?"*

In the behind the scenes stuff they made a big deal about all the green screen etc. I couldn't help but think--gee the Stargate actors do this all the time. Admittedly it was almost total for the film, but I couldn't help feeling our team are the experts. :)
