Remember in the movie Ark of Truth where in the opening scene some good ol' Ancient folks were discussing how they believe in discovering things through rational observation and science stuff? Remember how that was cast in saying that the Ori looked towards none-sciencey things (religion...even though they themselves made it up a la Goa'uld).
Now the best guess is that the Ori were probably talking about something similar to ascension. After they ascended they gained knowledge to build massive super ships of doom that rivaled present day Asgard technology.
But that's the problem, the Ori ascended following the non-sciencey path and ended up gaining the same knowledge that the ancients did. They were...right.
