The Underwater Menace DVD Announcement (And Why It's Rather Disappointing)

    G'day,

The BBC have finally confirmed that The Underwater Menace, the Second Doctor's third story, will be released on DVD in 2015 with the only remaining unreleased episode of Classic Who - episode 2 (rediscovered in 2011) - and 2 animated episodes to replace the still-missing episodes 1 and 4. (And err, as that now sounds rather odd reading - long ago recovered episode 3 will also be included )

Many fans have been greatly frustrated by the handling of this story following the discovery of Episode 2 in someone's attic back in 2011. It was the first find of a missing Troughton story since 1991's Tomb of the Cybermen recovery, and us Troughton fans were over the moon at the prospect of not only being able to see this episode, but also knowing that, thanks to the already existing episode 3, the story now met the "1-2 episodes only" limit for having the still missing episodes animated for DVD release.

Indeed, the DVD was originally announced some time ago, with the animated episodes, however it was then suddenly pulled from the schedule...

Optimists/fantasists wanted to believe that this was in fact evidence of the "Omni Rumour" - a Missing Episodes rumour that claimed up to 90 missing episodes had been found in Africa. This was of course bolstered when it was announced that 11 Classic Who episodes had been found in Nigeria - 9 of which were missing episodes! So, surely the BBC had pulled The Underwater Menace because episodes 1 and 4 had been recovered too, but for some unknown reason could not yet be officially announced...

The confirmation now therefore that The Underwater Menace is to be released with animated fillers for 1 and 4 serves as a fairly undeniable nail in the Omni Rumour's coffin.

Meanwhile, because of the delay in the DVD release (and without an iTunes release), someone probably from the BBC leaked the recovered episode 2, so that the impatient fans could enjoy their cosmic hobo in this unseen (in 40+ years) episode. (Thank-you mystery leaker!)

    cheers

    That sounds pretty awesome!
But by the "1-2 episodes" criteria, shouldn't The Crusade get a release too?
