At some point in the series the question was posed: "if the Tollan can go through stuff when they are out of phase, how come they don't sink through the floor?"
There are 3 dimensions in nature (actually 4, but we don't need to consider time): length, breadth and height. More importantly, these dimensions are independent of each other. If you are phase-shifted by 180 degrees in one of these dimensions, you will be able to pass through stuff in that dimension. The Tollan don't sink through the floor because they are phase-shifted by 180 degrees in length and breadth, but they aren't phase-shifted in the height dimension, so they can't pass through objects that are above or below them.
If anybody has an alternate theory, please post it on this thread.
