    New theory on Tollan technology

This is what I have so far: I believe their ion cannons operated by forcing naquadah gas through an electrical arc, then magnetically propelling it towards the target. What does everybody else think?

Well we don't know if Naquadah can be turned into a gas.

Why wouldn't it, it behaves like any matter

we saw liquid naquadah quite a lot... it powered the staff weapons and the anti goauld satellite that daniel made in his "dream"... but gas form will be 'magnificently' unstable... well it must be something similar in "power" generation to what the habriddens had in their ion propulsion systems... the same science just in different application...

Does it have to be naquadah gas? Your launch system makes sense for an ion cannon (a particle accelerator), but it could just shoot ionized particles. It doesn't have to be naquadah gas.

then how come it bypasses goauld shields if it's just made up of ordinary matter?

              Naquahdah isn't just ordinary matter.

only in that it ain't in current periodic table, which doesn't mean much
in the end it's still a mineral made of a nuclei (protons & neutrons) surrounded by electrons eg. atoms so it's ordinary matter

(as opposed to say, electron-degenerate matter or dark matter)

It´s properties are simply not explainable. Like what makes it so useful for shield generators et all, what makes it so strong (a material that heavy would be either liquid or a noble gas), what makes it so resistant to heat, what makes it superconductive at room temperature etc.

It can't be made solely from the basic stuff we know.

probably huge nucleus so unusual atomic mass

we already got our own "magic" substances with plenty of unusual properties - like water & dioxygen. they're still ordinary matter

tollan canon is obviously an energy weapon

a huge nucleus means that the outer electrons have a huge amount of energy and thus go really fast. the problem is that fast electrons do not like to react. Therefore such an element would be either a liquid or a gas. Not something that stays very strong at 1000's of degrees.

there are other factors than nucleus size to determine phase at room temperature, else hydrogen would be solid. other metals of similar mass to mercury are solid at room temperature anyway

besides the very fact that the people in stargate - made of ordinary matter as far as we know - can handle & in particular touch naquadah (=> electrostatic interaction) means that technically it is ordinary matter

For anything with low nucleus size, yes. when you get really heavy stuff it stops mattering and the relativistic effects become dominant.

So? As i mentioned, it can't be 100% ordinary matter. It probably has a nucleus and electrons, yes. I'm saying that a LOT more is going on.

                            hey it's extraordinary alright :| doesn't make it non-ordinary

                            else define "ordinary" matter

besides those canons can't be using naquadah projectiles anyway, naquadah is a dark silver substance and whatever those guns fire is a blue glowing energy blob
also velocity & gravity considerations make this impossible

if anything the only real exotic matter in SG would be neutronium but strangely enough that too appears rather ordinary (and infinitely less dense & more stable than it should be)
