why hasn't destiny reached the edge of the universe yet?

that animation in the pilot made it look like the ship has consistently been zigzagging away from earth for millions of years, if it can travel across a single galaxy (about 100,000 light years) in less then one year shouldn't in have reached the edge of the universe already?

Your basic understanding of astrophysics needs work.

if there's a finite number galaxies doesn't that mean there's a most distant one from earth beyond which there is nothing?

We don't know that. Realistically, we will never be able to observe that.

According to what we currently know, there isn't an edge.

i'm no asphysiest but i've always thought that the was no exact end of the universe, at least from what we can observe from here.

well is there point where you'd stop finding new galaxies?

There isn't such a point. Every point looks like it is the center.

so there's a infinite amount of matter in the universe?

yes but that wasn't an argument, you said something wrong and I corrected you, what the guy said is not really disputable

Probably, but it would likely mean you start finding galaxies you've already encountered, rather than any sort of edge. Trying to find the edge or centre of the universe would probably be like trying to find the edge or centre of the surface of a balloon.

The Big Bang wasn't an explosion within space, it was an exansion of space itself. This doesn't imply that space is infinite in extent. Think of the universe like the surface of a soap bubble. If you're a small creature walking on that soap bubble, you'll never hit an edge.
