    I have.

    And it's probably a good idea to save copies of stories on any other fanfiction site that's still active. Who knows when others may go away, too.

    Very much so. Don't depend on the net to be there forever.

    I don't think many authors care if you save their fic, their biggest issues are if people repost them. So if you like it, save it locally.

    True. I take for granted that you used to be able to read all of helio. When I first started putting fic on there there were maybe 2,000 stories. I lot of what I've got saved I saved simply because I didn't have the internet at home so saved the web pages to read at home, kept what I liked, deleted the rest.....saved them on floppy disk. I have hundreds of megs of fic, and it started that way.

    No one can contact the hostess, Lyssa I think it was but don't quote me. I'm sure the files are still somewhere and it's likey money. that's usually what brings sites down, they outgrow the budget of the host.

    Might have been like what happened to jackfic.net a year or so ago... I think the renewal didn't quite happen on time and the site went into limbo. I remember I panicked, and actually did get an email through to the site owner offering to take over running it myself if she wasn't interested in doing so any longer (among the stories archived there are the original three by Flora that form the backstory basis for my characterization of Frank Cromwell). A while later, the site came back up, though since that time I've saved the Frank stories elsewhere in case it goes away again... considering that their own author essentially orphaned them.

    Glad it's back up. You're probably right about the renewal laps. I'm putting my own fanfics up on their own site just to be safe and will go back and save some of my favorites.

    If AO3 doesn't solve their access problems, they may as well be dead, too.

    They're fine at the moment. I think they're just having growing pains as a new site with limited server capacity. After all, they're still in beta. I'm willing to cut them some slack, as most websites don't necessarily hit the ground running with unlimited resources.

    It could be that I'm just trying to get in at one of their peak times; it's frustrating, that's all.

    Believe me; I understand the frustration. I was trying to get in and check on something, and then later I tried again when I was ready to post the newest chapter of All That We Leave Behind, and they were jammed up. Then later on, it all seemed to clear. This was all within the past 24 hours, too. Yes, I was frustrated.

    THey posted a note on one site that they've had a massive surge in memberships and registrations, and like 10-20,000 people waiting for invites.

    They're the 'mom and pop' restaurant that has lines out the door and down the block and are swamped at the moment.

    Oh, I'm not the least bit surprised. Lots of people are irritated at Fanfiction.net lately over the whole business with Critics United or whatever the heck they're calling themselves... that group makes for a very hostile environment for writers, especially in some fandoms. So it stands to reason that some folks are probably jumping ship to AO3.

    You've also just explained why I'm still waiting for invitations I requested for friends. Ah well, one of the friends I want an AO3 invitation for I went ahead and gave some space on my own site to anyway, so at least it's something to play around with for now.

    In the last update notice they mentioned no longer handing out invitations requested for friends (by members). Simply because they had 17000 folks in their queue waiting for an invitation and only handing out a 100 a day at the moment and felt it wasn't fair to then hand members invitations for others.

    Down the Rabbit Hole (M-rated):
    A malfunctioning quantum mirror causes an explosion and catches Major Samantha Carter unaware. When she comes to she discovers she has not only ended up on the wrong side of the mirror, but also the law! Forced to live as her counterpart, she tries to find a way home. Can she trust her CO's alternate or does he have a plan of his own?
    -> Chapter 3 is up!
