I'll always take real life over TV.![]()
This will be my last post on this site. Sad, eventually GateWorld will shut it's doors. I wonder what the last post will say - "It was a fun ride while it lasted."
I loved Stargate, the humor, the "Carter you've got 5 seconds or the earth will be distroyed," and many more things about the show. Ah, but it will live on in reruns and DVD's.
As Miss Clavel of the Madeline book series said, "Miss Clavel closed the book and shut the door, that's all there is there isn't anymore."
I registered here to participate in the the group re-watch, but I've discoved that the SciFi Stream has something for everyone. (I currently like the Game of Thrones sub-forum.) I suppose GW will one day close its doors but can see no reason why that day would be anytime soon.
Because the show was never about The Destiny escaping from aliens or anything like that. It wasn't even really about the plot of the Destiny's mission. It was about the characters' stories. And every one of them reached what could be called a conclusion, or at least what passes for being close enough. Most of them came full circle in some capacity, especialyl Eli
It wasn't the perfect ending but it still worked.
"First Weir, then Samantha Carter, and now, you! It's a pity you humans die or get reassigned so easily, or I might have a sense of satisfaction now!"

No I haven't moved on. Stargate has saved my life, in the most literal way you can imagine, and I will always keep rewatching all three shows, the movies. I do understand that it's very unlikely we'll ever get a continuation of the franchise, but I do hold out hope anyway that maybe we'll get one movie one day, just for closure. One last time.
I agree. I thought the SGA finale was really great action-wise, and looking at how they've been trying to keep the Wraith from earth for five years, it was very interesting to see them deal with failing to do so.
But there was something about the SGU finale, as open-ended as it was, it felt more like an ending at the same time.
Spoiler:
I never said if that was a good or a bad thing but the fact is that is the type of show it was.

How should I move on to the next world without a "Stargate"?![]()
I'd like to see networks bring some closure to shows, or find a way to. It's hard to invest in a show, then have it cancelled abruptly, even if it makes business sense. Even a two hour finale, or planned exit as JMS made for Babylon 5, would be great.
Is anyone else hesitant to watch a new series, due to the cancellations done by the networks or studios?

Caveat: as I write this, I'm also aware that these are just tv shows. It's funny what we get attached to ...
To be fair, SG-1 got Ark of Truth and Continuum and that's about as much closure as you can ask for. Even had it ended on Season 8, the 2 parter "Reckoning" and "Threads" is a more meaningful ending than the 2 films, for me (thinking of the fishing scene at Jack's cottage).![]()

They don't care. Profit first, closure second. If closure will bring the network profit, it'll happen. No profit, no closure.
Don't most shows end abruptly? Most shows I've liked have ended abruptly. Either a regular episode, a cliffhanger, or a one or two-hour series finale. The only show I can think of that actually had a build up to the finale was Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with it's Final Chapter story line.
Honestly, I don't watch new programming anymore unless it's the news or a new TV movie. If I'm looking for a TV show I haven't seen before, I either look for one that's either ended or been on TV for a few years. I don't mind an unresolved ending, I just don't want to dive into a show that only lasted ten or so episodes. It just isn't worth my time if the show ends before it can go anywhere. For example, I plan to watch SGU eventually. I kept waiting for it to turn interesting before I dived in. I read about what was happening at the end of Season 2. Finally, it got interesting. OK, I was going to start from the beginning, but then it was cancelled. Then I decided, "Eh, why bother if it ends just episodes after getting real interesting?" I still plan to watch it, though, but only because it's clear to me that there won't be another SG series. At least, not for a very long time.
I can speak for others, but for me... it's less that I get attached and more about an ending. I hate it when a show gets cancelled, because there's just no resolution. Sometimes, however, a cancellation is announced early enough for a finale to be thrown together. I don't care if the finale is abrupt, I'll take that over nothing.
Indeed. Firefly was followed up with Serenity, Farscape with The Peacekeeper Wars, The X Files with I Want to Believe, and I'm sure there are other examples. I leave out Star Trek, because the movies play out as continued adventures. There really wasn't anything left unresolved at the end of either series.
Don't really think I can say I've moved on. After SG-1 and then SGA ended, I found more shows to squee over and fandoms to get very active in (I did watch SGU but wasn't as into it as the other two). But whenever I've needed a break from these other fandoms, I'll come back here, rewatch my DVDs, look more more fanfic, etc. I always find I can come home to Stargate. Yeah it stinks that the franchise is no longer active, but Stargate itself is like an old friend I can visit when other things (in this case other shows/fandoms) get too hectic.
Don't think I can ever totally move on, but I guess I've more or less accepted that we most likely won't be getting anything new. It does feel good to sometimes visit my old haunts, rewatch the DVDs, etc.
IF I watch a new show from its start, it means it's been on TV for a season already or close to it in the States. If it's shown here on TV, it's fair to say it will probably have gotten a second season otherwise local tv-stations aren't going to bother with it.
IF I start watching a new show by means of downloading it, there has to be a very good reason for it. A good review, interesting storylines, an actor/actress I like... and even then if I don't like it, I'll stop watching on my own accord.

It's a consideration. For non-SFF shows, I often wait to see whether it survives, and I sometimes don't mind waiting until the DVDs are issued.
For SFF, the reverse is true. I often can't wait. Sucks when the axe falls on them.
The show's channel is a factor, too. I'm less trusting of networks like Fox et. al. than I am of the cable channels (although there are no safe bets, as Caprica and Rubicon recently demonstrated).
Good grief, it's like you've been in my head. I don't really watch a lot of television these days anyway, having plenty of other things with which to occupy my time. That said, if I am going to watch a show, I hate to get interested in something only to have it be pulled. Sadly, the last few times I got interested in a new show, that's what happened to most of them. So now I wait to see if it's going to be around for a while, and then catch up via DVD or Hulu or something. This is true for me whether it's science fiction or something else.
Lately if I watch a series on DVD that isn't Stargate or Babylon 5, it's been The West Wing... and I'm kind of randomly catching reruns of The Wire on cable after a friend strongly suggested I might enjoy it. Been a long time since I've watched police drama (and no, I realize that isn't all it is, which may be part of the appeal).
The Fox network... yeah, I think I share your opinion there too. And as for the likes of Caprica, well, the less said the better from my direction.![]()

Explore Colonel Frank Cromwell's odyssey after falling through the Stargate in Season Two's A Matter of Time, and follow Jack's search for him. Significant Tok'ra supporting characters and a human culture drawn from the annals of history. Book One of the series By Honor Bound.
Not yet. I've only just started going back over Stargate from a mature perspective (the first time around I was only a child), on season 9 of SG1 so far. Haven't even touched on Atlantis or the films yet, so I'm suspending the belief that it's over for the time being. Then there's always the books.
If I can hold out hope for Firefly I think I can reserve a tiny bit for another Stargate offshoot sometime in the distant future. You never know. I'm happy with what we've got though.
This defines how I feel about SG-1 and Atlantis. I'd like to see more, but if no more, there's plenty to watch.
For me, it's only frustrating when a show ends on a straight up cliffhanger or is over after just one season. With SG, there's 17 seasons plus 3 movies. It had a swell run.
I'm watching season 8 .....again. I usually have SG-1 on in the evening while I'm also doing something else. My attention is slightly divided, but I'm working my way through all the eps . When I'm done with season 10, I will start over again. Yeah, even going thru watching the ones I don't particulary care for. I'm into sequential right now![]()

Trek BBS didn't shut down when Enterprise went off the air and Nemesis crash landed with a resounding thud. The Jedi Council didn't fold up their tent during the wilderness years, so why should Gateworld shut it's doors.
Stargate is too compelling a concept to abandon completely, MGM will come back to it eventually. It may be in film format via a complete reboot, but it will be Stargate, and the site traffic will ramp up again just like at the other genre boards I mentioned.
Have patience, it will all come to pass.
