The little we do know is that Colonel Young was a workaholic with a capital W and probably never took a day off for the rest of his life. An I am guessing that most of the crew were also like that, the state of their colony suggests this. This is a coping mechanism that is often employed by people.

They probably tried to lay the strongest possible foundations for their new society, so identifying sources of metals such as copper, Iron and how to refine them. Food, creating paper and the printing press, water purification would have been top priority.

We can presume that Eli being a scifi nerd and shown to be the main teacher, it more likely he told the stories of Star Wars and Star Trek and Outer Limits than Shakespeare.

From the look of the colony it look like they have reach the stage of pre industrialisation within the life times of the Destiny crew, at least 1700s, we can say that at the most took 50 years, but with large chunks of knowledge of 21st century science and technology, with probably clear development plans laid out by the crew. I reckon the destiny crew built a basic way of generating small amount of electricity as well.

The colony development may have slowed down once the crew died, but I doubt it slowed that much. Remember Sam Carter reckon we were about 800 years away from the Tolans thanks to the dark ages, which we can be pretty certain did not happen on Nova.

I think that the Novan probably had their own wars which set them back a bit. Also large populations moving through the Stargate may mean that the population on Nova stayed relatively small. The poster was not found on the original colony, it was found on a colony set up and seem to have been forgotten about by the novans. An it was obviously less advance than the original colony.

How all this came about would have been interesting area to explore in a third season of Stargate Universe.
One of the advantages of being a team of scientists in large part is that there are a lot of people with read-made knowledge, except for maybe the Geologist who dies in the pilot "Air", but they have engineers etc

Regarding 800 years from the Tolans, that's a bit hard to say, because there can be hundreds of years of little progress (dark ages), then a century of almost unimaginable development during the 20th century...

How is any kind of computer technology supposed to survive? The best we can get out of current technology is about 10 years, maybe 50 years with older analogue systems, but current technology "mother-boards" will not last more than 10 years before the silicon waffers break down.

Making paper is not so difficult and could be put into production with out difficulty. So I would expect that would be the best course, just like in movie "The Book of Eli"
SGU. Best Sci-fi show to come along in decades.
