I think McKay is a great character, yes he is arrogant and condescending, but he is also heroic and I actually like to see a character with flaws, I think this character is getting way to much flack. As for the actor, I think he have done a good job in all I have seen him in so I have no problems with him.
I think the only other programme I've seen DH in was Rise of Planet of the Apes, and the character seemed to be quite Rodneyish. I do, however, rate DH as an actor the Shrine perhaps his finest hour when he gave a performance that both brought me to tears and made me laugh.
I've read on here that some people think McKay had to much air time in Season 5, not sure about this, McKay was one of the main attractions and why I kept tuning in. Just seen Whispers, and the lack of McKay was very noticeable (and not in a good way)
Contrarily, Rodney was so annoying that I nearly quit watching the show on several occasions.
And yes, Rodney did have too much airtime......there's just no way around it.
David, on the other hand, I follow on twitter... he's hilarious.
The Tale of Heightmeyer's Lemming by Falcon Horus
"Run! Run, you clever boy! And remember!"
he did get way too much screen time and it hurt his character in my opinion. i thought mckay was good on sg1 because he only showed up every now and then but as soon as he was onscreen all the time he quickly started to get on my nerves.
The best written female character on trek ever.
Great character. He did a good job of developing his role as the show/shows(He played in both SG-1 and SG-A) went on. He always cracked me up.
He who controls the spice controls the universe!(And the kitchen.)
I haven't seen DH in anything else, but he seems like a really funny guy based on his interviews and con appearances. Although he's admitted he put quite a lot of himself into McKay so I don't know how long I could stand to be in his company.I couldn't stand McKay in SG-1. He was much too overbearing, obnoxious and horrid, although knowing that Amanda Tapping helped him develop the character softens my opinion somewhat, given that what I dislike most about McKay is his way with Carter. He lusts after her but at the same time belittles her, and it makes me want to strangle him. He did improve a bit in SGA, although I feel he got a bit too much screentime. I would have liked to see more Zelenka.
Getting ready for the GW Malcolm Reynolds weekend!
I've only ever seen him in SGA, Cube Zero and Planet of the Apes. Liked him in those. And also that clip of him on here.
Well, according to his IMDB page, he has a lot of credits to his name..

DH is pretty cool I heard him on the podcast with the guys on PC perspective. He knows his computers. Also thats how I learn that he gets motion sickness from playing FPS games. I heard he tweets a lot and they are funny and real but I don't use twitter that much. I've seen DH outside his roles on Stargate but its been his best role for sure. He played Dungeons and Dragons as a kid and loved Sci-fi. He got to play a role he really identified with(which is not true for many actors)
Favorite quote:
McKay: You shot me!
Sheppard: Yes, Rodney, I shot you, and I said I was sorry.
Ronon: You shot me, too.
Sheppard: I’m sorry for shooting everyone!
i never had much of an interest in SG-1. the entire reason i started watching SGA was because i noticed "that guy from Cube" was in it and decided to give it a shot. (couldn't be all bad, right?) i didn't even know his real name...i just loved his character in that movie and was glad the actor was getting work.
now, here i am five years later, with two DVD sets, toys, various props and costumes, even a media room i decorated to look like a room in atlantis, totally obsessed with SGA and posting about it like a big fangirl nerd. all because of David Hewlett.
not really sure if i should be thanking him for that lol...![]()

He's probably my favorite SGA character, but he was overused. It's not just a matter of screen time; it's that he almost single-handedly saves the day in almost every episode.
In SG-1 Carter had a similar role, but early in the series Teal'c's knowledge of the Goa'uld let him be the font of wisdom for the group and the source of exposition for the audience on occasion. Likewise with Daniel's skills playing a prominent role in the problem solving allowing the narrative weight to be taken from Carter's shoulders. Even here a lot of the 'Carter saves the day again' stories have a lot happening off stage; Carter proposes a solution, Jack okays the plan, and then the story follows Jack, or one of the other characters versus watching Sam hack something while the action takes place around her.
The SGA team didn't have the same dynamic (and where it did with Teyla and Ronon's Pegasus galaxy knowledge it was under-used), and there are a handful of episodes where Shepherd is literally telling McKay that it is entirely up to him to save the day, which becomes absurd because the other team members contribute so infrequently to the point that McKay could have done it on his own with any three gunmen backing him up. If McKay was there delivering lines, but was de-emphasized as the sole problem solving member of the unit his screen time in itself wouldn't have been a problem.
I thought Whispers was one of the better stand-alone episodes, and thought it was a better take on the horror homage they tried with the Alien episode in s4, and felt it was particularly strong in that it didn't rely on McKay hacking into some terminal and causing magic to happen.
I think David Hewlett is a talented actor, but his character, Rodney McKay, was painfully overused in SGA. It hurt the character and the show because McKay was the focus of too many episodes. He became a one-note character that had worn out his welcome by Season 5 for me. Furthermore, the McKay-centric story-lines were so similar that many episodes were dull, predictable and repetitive.
Although the writing for the other original characters wasn't much better, they weren't used as much, so they didn't suffer as much by comparison. Nor, did their characters hurt the show overall as much.

Re: So what do you think of the actor behind McKay?

I'm a definite Hewlett fan. I follow him on twitter and used to follow his blog years ago. He's diverse, he's hilarious, and more importantly, he's Canadian
As far as Rodney, he was one of my favourite SGA characters. I actually had a HUGE crush on him the first time I saw the show.
The appeal comes from the very fact that, as impossible as it may seem, the concept itself is plausible. Plus, it's more interesting than most real life shows.
David Hewlett is a very talented actor. I've seen him in lots of different things, but the first I saw was Cube. I've probably seen over half his work
McKay on the other hand...I probably let slip a few expletives when I saw the first pictures of the SGA cast and realised he was there...By Hide and Seek I loved him.
My only complaint with McKay was how he was still wimpy at the end. I can't remember the name of the episode with Keller and Ronon where they were fighting the Wraith. Jennifer who'd been positively s**ting herself in "Missing" kicked butt, but Rodney who had been on the main team since day one could barely reload his 9mm. The McKay-as-Coward thing was funny at first, but by season five it was tiresome. Sheppard should have taken McKay off the team if he'd been that bad so as not to endanger Teyla, Ronon and himself.
