    Daedalus landing on the pier

just watched the episode "the hive" and it looks more like it lands on water instead of the pier, has anyone else noticed this?

I recently watched that episode as well. I was under the impression that it landed on the Pier. If you'll recall when the Wraith transport lands in under escort by 302's, it might be the same landing platform.

It's in the intro credits too.

Good point that I forgot about! Nice catch!

yeah i thought it landed on the pier but go back and look and you can see what looks like it being next to the pier unless its just an illusion

This has been a subject of debate pretty much since the first night that this episode aired. The disagreement seems to be because the dialogue states that the ship is landing on a pier, while the VFX shot appears to show it landing (or at least hovering) over water.

Just throwing my two cents in here but could it be that it's kinda both? Perhaps where it's landing is on the watery section of one of the larger piers. I've been trying to figure this out as well ever since they showed the scene in "The Siege Pt 3". Couldn't really get a good shot there either but that is just my speculations.

Perhaps it's a mirage? That could account for how it does indeed look as if they are landing on water...

From Gateworld's image gallery. Note how in the first one its landing lights illuminate the water instead of the pier. Also, the landing struts/legs haven't been extended, which would be critical if landing on a hard surface (yes, yes, the water is 'hard' too, but not in a controlled landing, and not relative to the pier itself).

One could make arguements for both cases (why it should land on the pier itself vs why it should land on the water eg the added weight to the pier, its engines burning a hole in the pier vs the stress placed on the hull instead of the struts/legs) but I think they did it because it was a cool shot

I have no problem with the ship landing on the water. The question is... can it float? Was it designed for that? Missed opportunity: the Daedalus crash lands on the ocean and must be salvaged before it takes on too much water. That would have been a fun episode, no?

my guess is that it can float simply because of the forcefields would seal any possible leak, now if the ship lost power then who knows but im sure it would float like any ship until it took on water

It's a spacecraft, so therefore air tight. The volume of air held internally is most probably larger that the volume of water the craft would displace if in water. If that is the case, it would float. Simple engineering.

Just because it's airtight with shields doesn't mean it has buoyancy. It doesn't look to me like it would displace enough water to float.

Shields have nothing to do with it. Archimedes Principle More commonly known as the Principle of Buoyancy and the Law of Flotation are the key. If an objects weight is less than the weight of the fluid being displaced by the object, the object will float. The unknown is the density of the materials the ship itself is constructed of.

i'm sure it can float, it only seems logical
