there must be some supernatural element to their beliefs as there isn't enough logic or science to back them up

I possibly disagree: when the first survivors realised they were abandoned, Dr. Rush was still aboard Destiny and would come to find/rescue them. That is a belief based on personal observation. Which, even allowing for realising there had been time-travel, would still be a belief based on experience. Later it would be belief based on parental, grand-parental and then anecdotal belief. The basis of a religion...

the belief that rush would come back is highly unreasonable, so either the entire the entire population is in denial about that or some supper natural element has been added to him mythos to explain away this discrepancy
"The basis of a religion" their are many many religious people who covert at some point adulthood, although what your referring to does exist but it's a problem that doesn't just include religious beliefs, it includes an entire range of beliefs and view points parents see nothing wrong with telling kids are right when their at an age when they will believe anything their told.... but fortunately I'm inclined to believe availability of information in our modern age is helping to prevent people carrying the beliefs they where given as children all though life without questioning them, I think that's why atheism is more common these days and why I reject "the entire population is in denial" explanation as Novus is clearly advanced enough to be well into it's information age and unless Futura is some kind of information controlling dictatorship it's primary religion would have to at least half way reasonable in it's beliefs for it not to die out

Why? He's done near-miraculous things before.

when has rush ever done something on the scale either live 2000 years or invent controlled time travel on a broke space ship?
also there that "worship" comment line, if they just think he's a very smart man on a space ship not a supernatural being why would they worship him? what good would it do?

Didn't Ellie say that they worship him like a god?

Well, if you're gonna start quoting the actual dialogue to back up your argument...

                Good points, well made.

The original people became divided over who was better to follow, Rush or Young, over time these beliefs become religious. Even a society based in science will have those in it who will invent religious traditions.
Excatly what you said! Its only natural I guess that they would create a religion based of their ancestors because they had nothing else they could based it on.

It's possible that Scott took up some kind of priestly role once they settled in, since that was a profession he was familiar with and was possibly going to pursue before he joined the Air Force.
