Yes, the average person would symphathize with actors who have been "attacked", but - unfortunately, some of TPTW/actor comments that rubbed fans the wrong way occurred before SGU even aired. And, for the record, only 2 actors have been guilty of multiple off-putting comments, not the entire SGU cast.
Are you really trying to equate the level of recent PR-fail to TPTW's usual level of PR-fail prior to SGU? To refresh your memory, prior to SGU, TPTW limited their comments to staunchy defending their favorites and their writing by going after those who didn't like aspects of their writing - they didn't make digs at the entire SGA fandom. Nor did they knock both SG-1 and SGA fans by implying that they were satisfied with "comic-book relationships" and "flawless square-jawed heroes" and simplistic storylines.
There also weren't any comments about people not being mature or intelligent enough to get their show or that SGA was much cooler than SG-1. No, as bad as their pre-SGU comments were, they never reached the recent level of fail.
IMO, TPTW created this situation by not treating SGU as a full part of the Stargate franchise in the beginning and that carried over to some of the actor's comments when they were promoting the show. Sure, TPTW wanted to take advantage of the Stargate name in terms of using the franchise's "built-in fanbase", but they also seemed to be ashamed of classic Stargate and tried to make sure that SGU was seen as Stargate in name only. They found out the hard way that they couldn't have it both ways.
