Default Mobile DHD for Android Project (I hope)

Okay, so I'm a programmer, I've recently learned Java, and tonight I've installed the Android SDK. I'm saying this to tell you just how very far from working this project is from happening. I am a Game Design student at DeVry in my junior year though, so I'm not a random guy hoping to throw a bunch of crud together, but this was an idea I had.

    The concept is here: http://imgs.ocdtrekkie.com/MobileDHDConcept.jpg

But basically... if I'm even going to try to mess with this, I'm going to need artwork to work with, and if I wanna release it, all the image usage has to be above board and stuff, not just grabbed from websites. I'm wondering if anyone has the art assets they made to contribute (they'd be credited), or was willing to create some.

Of course, as I said, I'll be teaching myself Android programming while designing this thing, so I can't guarantee I'll be able to make it happen, but I really wanna try, and I think I can pull it off.

So, here's my... anyone have any graphics to get me started, or have suggestions on the idea? (The concept sketch was thrown together in about 60 seconds, yes, it looks terrible, and yes, there's only 6 boxes for the address, I was drawing for concept, not accuracy )

That would be pretty cool if you could use a gate address as kinda a caller id. You could give each friend an address and when you call them you see the DHD dialing up his/her number/address.

That's a neat idea! I'm not nearly advanced enough to integrate it with the phone capabilities of the device, I'm looking for now at working on more of a simulator, like if the SGC took the dialing program on the laptops and made a handheld version akin to a kino remote or something. But it's certainly something I could mess with down the road, especailly considering all the similarities between a Stargate dialer and a phone.

Heh, dial your friend with gate symbols... that'd be fun. Iunno, first things first, going to work on a basic sim.

    Other thoughts on my mind:

    * I could use the same code/assets to start work on a desktop version as well. Java and all being cross-platform.

    * If the SGC one works well, I could later try making an Atlantis version, maybe an SGU version if SGU improves enough to make it interesting for me. (There's some really good eps in Season 1.5 but I find the series still a bit lackluster.)

I thought I should quick update here. In case anyone's reading this, and actually cares.

    1. I've got a start on the code for the application. That means... I figured out how to make buttons and text and menus. As I do not yet have a gate image I can use, I haven't actually started on the gate yet. :/

    2. I did find some Stargate images I really liked and messaged the artist regarding the possibility of use, but have not heard back. I am still entertaining the hope of finding others, or someone around here being crafty enough to create what's needed. We'll see.

    3. Yes, I have a better concept image now, but I haven't uploaded it yet.

Sounds pretty cool! I don't pretend to understand any of it. Look forward to any Atlantis apps you might come up with in the future.

Hey, quick update. No, it's not ready, or even close to it. Unfortunately, those things such as the girlfriend, schoolwork, and trying to get a better job have all gotten fairly solidly in the way of working on this project. Mostly the girlfriend, because I don't pay enough attention to her when I'm coding, so she doesn't like me coding.

But I have acquired the necessary image permissions from an artist for my graphics I want to use, which is a big huzzah for me, because my graphics skills are pretty bad. (See concept image above).

I've also figured out I'm going to have to use OpenGL ES to make this happen the way I want to. It opens up a lot more options for what I can do with it, but comes at the nasty curse of being more complex to code. I know OpenGL, and I know a bit of Android programming, but getting them to play nice together is another ball game I'll have to learn to play.

I have some other app ideas too brewing up in the old idea box, so I should really get to work on these soon! ;D
