If we could find a way to replicated Destiny's ability to use the sun for power, could Atlantis reach Destiny using the Wormhole Drive and rescue/defend them. Plus we could dock a 304 on each pier of Atlantis and take them too.

no rescue attempts will work because they would destroy the plot
R.I.P Stargate 1994-2009
I know it would destroy the plot, I'm asking do you think it would be possible otherwise.
mmm. i don't know. it won't get you there instantly. but after several jumps it will work. unfortunately, that still means each jump might incinerate the city
It depends on how much energy Atlantis can store temporarily. If the trip takes too long (even normal gate travel takes a few seconds) they might run out of power half way and get stranded in the middle of nowhere. Hmm, they could plot a course to exit near a sun and recharge when they're running low... Keep hopping until they reach Destiny.
Also we don't know if Atlantis even has the tech to drain the power from a sun at this scale. Since ZPMs are the main powersource they could have decided against another system, to save space.
Carter:"The singularity is about to explode!"
Enemy at the Gate is best forgotten and assumed to have never really happened.
it was cool but had a shallow plot.
anyway, i believe you can't run out of power halfway when using a wormholedrive.
Why would they risk one of Earth's most valuable pieces of technology falling into the wrong hands/getting destroyed/breaking down/etc? Not to mention everyone already there trying to study the databases
Even if they would get the wormhole drive(whatever that is) online, Destiny is galaxies away. It took Destiny like millions of years to reach to where we are now in Stargate Universe.
actually it is a technology that COULD get us there, but it's a gambling machine, there's a big chance you die. we could just montage the wormholedrive into a 304 BTW
This^. Read s09's version for a MUCH much better episode to how it played out.
Anyway, if we DO take the wormhole drive as canon for whatever reason, then even for this plan to work, Atlantis would need a complete overhaul. You would have to install giant hydrogen collectors on it, as well as tanks to store the hydrogen in, as well as a fusion generator for the hydrogen to fuse in, as well as a way to tie that brand new fusion generator into the pre-existing wormhole drive.
That may be a bit of a tough job for anyone to do, even if you had the complete schematics for Destiny's solar power system (which we don't). You almost might as well build a brand new craft.

Proud supporter of His holy BAGness!
the idea was the wormholedrive to be used, not specifically atlantis. we don't know WHAT and IF it scoops up stuff, since all power after the star is apparently just stored.
This is the best thing to do.
The wormhole drive is the biggest load of crap I've seen in a show for a long time. It wouldn't have been so bad if they had at least made references to the drive during the shows existence but no, it's like pulling a rabbit of their ass and of course Rodney had already gotten a lot of the calculations already done.
The only reason you give up old technology, is because something better comes along. ZPMs obviously win on space requirements. They probably also win on the sheer amount of energy stored. I believe there are potentially millions of years worth of energy in a ZPM, depending on what you are doing.
The problem with the wormhole drive, is that jumping to some place, you have no way of knowing for sure what is in that space you are about to occupy. So, this would make shorter jumps safer, longer ones more dangerous. To jump between galaxies, where the light from your destination is thousands of years old, that is a big risk factor. Jumping just outside of a galaxy, into a void, would be your best bet, but still not entirely free of risk. To implement this strategy, you would want to make several jumps; jump just outside the next galaxy, hyperdrive in, fly into a star (using that Destiny tech) and do your next jump from there using the power of the star. I estimated in another thread that this kind of jumping would take nearly 300 years one way. Still, that is orders of magnitude faster than the 5 million it took Destiny traveling at FTL.
It actually makes more sense just to wait. In 600 years (round trip time), you will probably come up with even better technology.
Stargate + Black-hole = Everyone comes home. Stargate + Black-hole = Destiny Receives backup/Resupply. Midway-Like station built orbiting a black-hole for long distance Stargate hops = No Brainer.
Why does no one remember these things?
