Brian and Jamil - Smith and Smith: Stargate Universe Is More than Meets the Eye!
News Thursday, April 8 by Captain
One of the most interesting things about the cast of Stargate Universe is the differences you see between the actors and the characters they play. So often you see casting in Hollywood adhering strictly 'to type', but in the wilds of Vancouver, things are a little different. Of course, it's not that much of a surprise - creators Brad Wright and Rob Cooper have a history of interesting casting, going back all the way to the initial SG-1 days that put MacGyver together with an ex-footballer, a David Spader [sic] impersonator and a young fresh-faced blonde.
That worked out okay, don't you think?
Jamil Walker Smith plays master sergeant Ronald Greer, a hard arse military man with a lightning temper and a permanent grudge against everything. This is a character who sees getting sent to the other side of the universe as a good thing, with a possible shot at redemption.
Brian Jacob Smith plays Lieutenant Matthew Scott, seemingly the perfect 'boy scout' on The Destiny, but also with a haunted, religious past.
In real life, it's not quite the same!
Jamil is actually and accomplished writer/director, and Brian is a graduate of Juilliard, devoted to the craft of acting.
Sci Fi Pi managed to speak to them on the phone in Vancouver, on what was a 'party' line, by name and nature. Things didn't quite go according to plan (we'll have other bits later) but you can get a real sense of the vibrant playfulness that is a major part of the Stargate Universe set.
