Headlining a movie, even a "lesser" movie, is a big achievement for a television actor. Many working TV actors aspire to make a jump to the big screen, and getting a leading role is a big deal.
Not every movie costs $100 million and gets worldwide distribution by a major studio. But it's still a step up for Jason.

I'm thrilled to bits for Jason
There's a small article at Empire online.
It's going to be extremely funny when my fellow teenage girls start thunking him where as I've been thunking him for years now. *evil laughter*
I'm scared of when my teenage students start thunking him! LOL!
I was watching a vid on youtube the other day from a con late last year where Joe F was talking about Jason (must have been November, because Joe mentioned that Jason was in Ireland before filming on Game of Thrones got underway) and Joe said "That guy's gonna be a movie star!". It's so good to see the support these guys have for each other, and it's so good to see our TV heroes going on to new things.![]()
Thats funny since McKay once referred to Ronan and Teyla as Conan and Xena.
Jason.. in a loincloth? Well, could be worse, they could've had asked Hewlett.. imagine HIM in a loincloth. Now that would be scary and trauma inducing.
"You spent 7 years as MacGyver and you can't figure this one out? We got belt buckles and shoe laces and a piece of gum, build a nuclear reactor for crying out loud.."
"...."

They'd have knives...
Big step up, but of course in hedges on the movie not tanking completely. I don't see any real successful movies from the director, but hey, things do change. Also if the movie takes off I don't see him returning as Ronon, even though the chances of an SGA movie seem to be dwindling with each passing day.
It's GREAT NEWS!!! Momoa has come along way and worked very hard, since the early days. It's about time people started to see just how talented he is!! He's more than a face and body! Always has been. YOU GO MOMOA!!!

a lot more in the article.“Conan the Barbarian” (1982) and the “Conan the Destroyer” sequel (1984) starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, now governor of California. Momoa was just a toddler when Schwarzenegger first strode on screen as the swarthy, blue-eyed barbarian.
“At the time, it was amazing … It’s got a little ’80s vibe to it,” Momoa said.
2011’s “Conan” has potential to be as big as the 1982 film, according to Edward Summer, associate producer of “Conan the Barbarian.”
“The original Conan stories are very strong stories.”
And a strong story can lead to a strong script, he said, although there is no exact way of knowing what the film’s impact will be. “Barbarian” grossed nearly $70 million worldwide, according to box office revenue tracking Web site boxofficemojo.com.
At 6 feet, 5 inches and 215 pounds, Momoa, of Hawaiian heritage on his father’s side, fits the physical features of Conan. (His green eyes can be made blue with contact lenses, Momoa noted.)
He expects to add 10 more pounds of muscle to his frame with help of David Leitch, a stunt performer seen in “The Bourne Ultimatum” and Chad Stahelski, the martial arts stunt coordinator for “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions.”
Conan retains a strong fantasy following as the subject of a Marvel comics series from 1970 to 1996, picked up by Dark Horse Comics in 2003 “Conan” and in 2008 for “Conan the Cimmerian.”
