Red face How to fix the show Atlantis ( Spoilers, including the second half of season 1)

I keep watching the show but every episode there are at least one but usally more things that I can't help but think to my self, "WTF is up with this show".

So I thought I would post what I think they could do to fix the show in the off chance that anyone related to the show might read it. I do agree with other posters though that if the show keeps the way it is going I am going to pretend it doesn't exist in the Stargate universe much like Startrek V. How ever I am not giving up hope yet that possibly in a second season they might improve it.

First thing is all the worlds they have visted just plane suck. The cool thing about Stargate SG1 is most of the worlds are based on Myths. Now since they are far away from earth the cultures might not be the same but atleast make them better. (on the same note in Stargate SG1 they explained why the worlds all are based on human myths but what the hell are Humans doing around Atlantis, why would the ancients bring them there?)

The second thing is they need an Asguard as a character. Because it is way to glaring a fact that the Asguard aren't involed in any way. But hell a simple transmition from the Asguard saying "yeah we knew about the wraith and that is the reason we can't go to Atlantis to get your people and why we didn't mention them to you" or mabey a Tok'ra but still the Asguard either have to be there or have some REALLY good reason they can't help.

Thrid didn't they come there to get things that should help Earth battle the Goa'uld. So lets get more plot lines like we found this great weapon that could help but damn it we can't contact them we need to spend more eps searching to contact Earth.

Fourth we need to me the race that they haven't shown yet. Mabey tease us with it and then come around and say that the Wraiths are really them (mabey they changed themselves to kill Ancients in a war with them who the hell knows). I think that would be cool but hell lets meet them.

Fifth although the Goa'uld aren't the main bad guys there it doesn't mean there aren't any. Mabey they were cut off. Mabey the Goa'uld real homeworld is near. How about the reason the Goa'uld never were able to take control of the area was the Wraith. And the old Goa'uld don't know about it because it has been such a long time since the Goa'uld's in our part of the Galaxy had contact with the ones by Atlantis (this also opens the possiblity of the ancients accidently bringing the Goa'uld to earth). So to sum up this idea they Goa'uld there could be more like the Tok'ra where mabey they don't like humans but they team up with us because they are also fighting the Wraith.

    Spoilers for The Defiant One

    Spoiler:
Sixth, this is more of a complaint about an episode i just saw but it shouldn't happen again. One Wraith is Shipwrecked on a planet and he maganes to kill two of the no named people anyway they kill the Wraith and leave. The whole point of going there was to get information about the ship. They just killed the only thing preventing them from doing this and they just left. So this fix is really, think about what the chars are doing if it lacks common sense don't have them do it.

7th I am sick of people we see once and they drop dead. It is so obvious they are cannon fodder. Just stick them in another episode breifly to show them they exist for other things then dieing. This doesn't even have to cost any extra money they just need to prepare and shoot the other episode scenes when the actor is present for his big cannon fodder role.

8th Don't keep them out of contact with SG-1 untill the VERY last episode in the 7th season (if it runs that long). Give them contact before then. It wouldn't hurt any and they could have broader missions. This doesn't mean they have to defeat the Wraiths but hell atleast radio contact would make sense.

9th stop putting every main Char that isn't in the military in a military role. They should be peon soldiers for that stuff. Not saying it can't even happen or they can't back up the military guys but they shouldn't be on point every episode.

In sumation I really think what can save this show is closer ties to SG-1.

Thats all my ranting for right now, feel free to post your own revision on the coarse the show should take, mabey if we get a big enough list some one from the show will do something or we could all be wasting our time, who knows.

Humans in Pegasus are the descendants of the Ancients.

There’s plenty of reasons why the Asgards can’t help, their entire civilization was destroyed the Replicators, and if they weren’t able to help when Anubis invaded they’re not going to be able to help with Atlantis.

They already found the Goa’uld homeworld and the Goa’uld don’t have the technology to travel to Pegasus.

Sheppard was wounded and two of the scientists who had the expertise to study the ship died plus it was getting close to night time and they already figured out that the planet has very cold nights, it would have made much more sense to get Sheppard back home to get treated for his injuries and bring back a new research team the next day to study the ship rather than brave through a below zero night to study the ship while Sheppard bleeds to death.

That happens a lot in SG1 as well. Plus there are quite a few recurring minor characters like Halling, Jinto, and Cowen.

9th stop putting every main Char that isn't in the military in a military role. They should be peon soldiers for that stuff. Not saying it can't even happen or they can't back up the military guys but they shouldn't be on point every episode.
The only time I remember that happening was in “the Defiant One” when McKay shot the Wraith.

I agree that they haven't visited any interesting planets. And the Wraiths are too one dimensional, at least so far.

The cast is great. Atlantis is nice.

I'd like to see the people on the crew tested emotionally. At first the writers had to establish the characters. Maybe in the second half of the season, they'll get tested. And maybe the locales will have more variety.

I'd like a romance for McKay. Now that would be interesting!

When I joined the Peace Corps and went off to Africa with 42 other people, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Atlantis is not so different.

So where is the person who freaks out?

Where is the person who tries to go native?

And where is the person who gets really weird and won't associate with anyone, then starts his own religion?

Atlantis is it's own show, it's not supposed to be a companion show to SG-1. Most of the things you ask would not make sense to someone who has never seen SG-1, but only watches Atlantis. I think the producers did a great job distancing Atlantis from SG-1. It's very different, but at the same time has a similar feel. I say "if it aint broke don't fix it".

I don't know; considering that's it's actually averaging better ratings than SG-1, I don't think it needs "saving" at all.

I might get flamed or bad rep for what I'm about to say but I'll say it anyway...

In my opinion SGA so far has been FAR better than SG-1 S8 and has been better than SG-1 S1.

There is more wrong with SG-1 right now than with Atlantis. Just my opinion

It appears to me that you are -now, or maybe always have- gone into each episdoe expecting something horrible, so you actually nit pick to find things. Ive done it myself, But thats what I get the feeling of when I read that.

Pretending a show doesnt exist doesnt help it any. Its kinda like cutting your nose off to spite your face.

So far we've vistied 9 worlds. Only half of the season has been based around planets. Though I do agree that most SG-1 worlds were based around myths, you have to remember that these worlds we're created by the Ancients, and these worlds have never been in contact with Earth, or we're transported around the galaxy by Go' ould(sp?). I personally tink adding a few aliens to the mix would spice things up a bit. The Ancients didnt bring them there, they seeded those worlds with life, as is told in "Rising Part1".

I hate this argument most of all. As much as the cute aliens we know as asguard are, they aren't needed in the show. Nor are the Tok'ra. This isnt SG-1: Atlantis. This show must stand on its own two feet and introduce new aliens. not rehash the old ones. What you're suggesting is simply cructhing Atlantis, not aloowling it to grow beyond Stargate SG-1, and become its own show.

They came to find technology that could help Earth, That is not limited to weapons technology. Medical, Agriculture, Power sources, Idustrial Poducts. Anything that can make life back on Earth better, for everyone. But I agree they should explore weapons and shields.
Im about to use spoiler tags, if they dont work im sorry, ive never used them before.
    Spoiler:
For those who havent read the synopsis or watched "the defiant one" we do discover an Ancients Weapons Platform in the system which Atlantis lays.

Im not sure about the second part of this, but I do agree with finding new aliens.

No, I believe they detected a distress signal that had Wraith origin, or detected the ship, I dont really remember which; and we're there to investigate why there we're Wraith in the Atlantean system.
I think Mr. Sheppard handled the Situation well
    Spoilers again
    Spoiler:
When the guy shot himself with his own weapon, I was moved by that. It takes a lot of guts to put the rest of the team ahead of yourself, to even think of pulling the trigger.

And lets not forget Sheppard using the puddle jumper in orbit to destroy the Wraith. No Wraith would have saw that one coming.... haha

No arguments. I would like to see a few of them return. Such as Dr. Zelenka! I like his character!

I think its more-less the idea that everyone there was trained in some sort of self-defense, as a precaution to going to an unknown galaxy. And Teyla seems to prefer hand-to-hand combat more then using a gun.

I dissagree. We need to define the shows differently. Neither truely influencing the way the other goes.
    well, thats all for me.

Well if you get flamed or a bad rep, we get flamed and get bad reps together because im am in total agreeance with what you said.
We couldnt have asked for a better first season of SG:A. Though I like S8 of SG1, its starting to lose momentum... IMO.

I agree That Atlantis s1 has been beter in ways than bits of Sg1 seasons 8 and 1. Hearing some of the stuff thats been said about Atlantis I watched quite a few of the epsiodes expecting the worst and I ended up being suprised. The opposite was true for some episodes of SG1. Could be the fact that Atlantis is all shiny and new now so it depends on where the programme goes from here. I'm definitely hopeful that it will do well.

If it's not broke, don't fix it. Atlantis has been consistantly much better than SG1 this season, and certainly was better than SG1 was in it's first season. It sounds to me like you were expecting the show to be SG1 and all your changes would do is make it more like SG1.

    It is not SG1.

I love Atlantis. It's far better than the past few seasons of SG-1. The characters are new, the ideas are relatively fresh, the writers haven't gotten bored yet and they haven't written themselves into any corners. Yet.

That being said, there's still room for improvement. There's always room for improvement. Ford needs fleshing out in a very bad and desperate way. Teyla needs to actually DO something. Weir has been getting better, but they still need to make her a stronger, more central figure.

While most of the stories are fresh, they need to stay away from recycling ideas, especially those used on SG-1. We're smart fans. We're going to pick up on that REAL fast. If the spin put on an old story isn't fresh enough, it isn't gonna float.

Gotta say, though, Atlantis is averaging fewer bad eps than SG-1 did its first season, and it's a heck of a lot better than SG-1 NOW.

All my opinion, of course, but I don't think Atlantis is in dire need of massive changes. If the setup of the show doesn't work for some people, that's just fine. The current setup of SG-1 doesn't work for me. As long as you can present your thoughts in a calm and reasonable manner without bashing anyone or flaming those who disagree, I say go for it. But don't be surprised by strong reactions. Think carefully before you post.

Then why are you still watching?

So I thought I would post what I think they could do to fix the show in the off chance that anyone related to the show might read it. Hey, I hope Season 2 improves the show too. It'd be great to see them top what's already been an awesome first season.

So, if Atlantis needs to be more like its predecessor, then SG-1 needs more Goa'uld who use little kids as bodyguards, an angsty epiphany for Jack in every episode, and Daniel finding his twoo wuv every week so it'll be more like the movie?

Repeat after me: Atlantis is not SG-1.

Besides, it's a bogus argument anyway. The Goa'uld pilfered human mythology and forced people to worship them. The Ancients, as far as we know, didn't do that, though there's significant evidence of the Ancients being considered gods among some of the groups of humans. But others clearly didn't worship any Ancient god, such as the people in "Underground" and "Poisoning the Well". So here's the thing: Atlantis is based off the technology of SG-1, and a tiny portion of SG-1's mythology. They're living in the Lost City of Atlantis! I don't know about you, but to me that seems like a much more consistent tie to the mythology of the franchise than SG-1 has had.

    First: A-S-G-A-R-D.

It's clear from "New Order" that
    Spoiler:
the Asgard don't know a whole lot about the Ancients' history, since they didn't know the location of the Lost City or enough about the Ancients to be able to sort through the knowledge in the Ancient repository without Jack's help. If they didn't know where the Ancients parked their flying city, what makes you think they knew about the Wraith?

Thrid didn't they come there to get things that should help Earth battle the Goa'uld. So lets get more plot lines like we found this great weapon that could help but damn it we can't contact them we need to spend more eps searching to contact Earth.
Yeah, they did, and that's why they're exploring the galaxy. But they have to survive long enough to be able to find things and send them back.

Fourth we need to me the race that they haven't shown yet. Mabey tease us with it and then come around and say that the Wraiths are really them (mabey they changed themselves to kill Ancients in a war with them who the hell knows). I think that would be cool but hell lets meet them.
I haven't the slightest idea what you mean. Are you talking about the Furlings or something?

Unlikely. The Goa'uld seem to have gotten off their planet (which, by the way, IS in the Milky Way — I think the episode was "The First Ones") while the Ancients were in Pegasus, or possibly just after. The timeline is a bit screwy and vague.

    "The Defiant One"
    Spoiler:
In case you missed that part, Sheppard had been shot and was in need of medical attention.
    Also, in "The Siege"
    Spoiler:
it seems fairly obvious that someone goes back to investigate things.
The story they were telling in "The Defiant One" just wasn't about exploring the ship.

    Been watching Star Trek lately?

8th Don't keep them out of contact with SG-1 untill the VERY last episode in the 7th season (if it runs that long). Give them contact before then. It wouldn't hurt any and they could have broader missions. This doesn't mean they have to defeat the Wraiths but hell atleast radio contact would make sense.
"Letter from Pegasus" and "The Siege"
    Spoiler:
They make contact this season. You seem fairly up on spoilers, so I'm surprised you didn't know this already.

9th stop putting every main Char that isn't in the military in a military role. They should be peon soldiers for that stuff. Not saying it can't even happen or they can't back up the military guys but they shouldn't be on point every episode.
    Daniel's an archaeologist, you know.

In sumation I really think what can save this show is closer ties to SG-1.
In summation, you want a copy of SG-1. I don't. Atlantis is just fine in its current direction. When I see something I want changed, I'm sure I'll make my opinion known.

Thats all my ranting for right now, feel free to post your own revision on the coarse the show should take, mabey if we get a big enough list some one from the show will do something or we could all be wasting our time, who knows.
Or... if enough people are unhappy and stop watching, TPTB will do something. But right now its ratings are higher than SG-1's. I doubt they're overly concerned about the quality of product they're giving.

That's another thing. If you hate the show, hate the premise, hate the characters, hate the plot, hate every single ep you've seen, then why the hell are you still watching it?! Turn the freakin channel. Put yourself out of the misery of having to watch something you hate and put us out of the misery of having to listen to you gripe about it when it's obvious you'll never be happy with it.

Sure I speak out about SG-1, but I tend to speak in general terms. I don't sit there watching every ep going "God, this sucks!" I reached a point where I couldn't take it anymore and I stopped watching. Simple as that.

It would not be SG:A if they put all the characters of the SG-1 series in it. I love it when they create a new universe. If I could only watch one of the two shows there would be no contest. It would be Atlantis.

Fortunately, we have both shows to fill the taste of the fans of the Stargate universe.

By definition to fix something means it has to be broken first... and so far I'm really enjoying Atlantis and think that its first season is terrific. Nothing's broken as far as I'm concerned. It's still in its infancy and there's not a lot in the story that we can poke holes at when we don't really know that much about the resident galaxy. And as others have pointed out, there are a lot of people who like Atlantis a lot... it's not perfect... but they are really enjoying it.

From what you are saying, you are expecting Atlantis to be a carbon copy of SG-1 and from where I'm standing, it is difficult for me to see how you can be objective about the show if already you expect it to be a clone of its predecessor. I still enjoy SG-1 and take it for what it is but I'll never suggest that it should be like Atlantis. My only real beef iabout Atlantis right now is that the episodes aren't coming fast enough.

Here's a list of recurring characters seen at least twice through Atlantis' first fifteen episodes:

Col. Sumner (KIA in the second ep, reaching my two ep minimum )
Dr. Beckett (will be a main character next season)
    Dr. Zelenka
    Dr. Grodin
    Sgt. Bates
    Sgt. Markham (PJ pilot)
Sgt. Stackhouse (he has a "Minnesota" accent )
    Halling
    Jinto
    Cowen
    Sora

Seconded, I like the fact that Atlantis is different from SG-1.
And if you want a copy, Hadees, stop watching.
Atlantis is fine as it is.

Does anyone else get the feeling this guy really doesn't know what he's talking about, and decided he was going to hate Atlantis before it even started?
