Fox Likely Won’t Pick Up Ron Moore’s ‘Virtuality’

    http://www.airlockalpha.com/news426330.html

As a strong network followup to "Battlestar Galactica," Ronald D. Moore had pinned his hopes on a Fox series that would take science-fiction fans to the stars. But now, it looks like "Virtuality" will be nothing more than a standalone movie, and a look of what could've been. Fox, according to The Futon Critic, plans to air the pilot July 4, a Saturday night and on a holiday ... not exactly the timeslot one would think a tease for a new show would go. It's not a surprise, however, as reports last December said Fox had ordered a number of changes to "Virtuality" in an effort to make it more "mainstream." Airing "broken pilots" during non-peak seasons are a way for a network to make some of its investment back during pilot season. It had commissioned "Virtuality" last summer from ...

I still remember the Fox meddling in Space Above and Beyond. I have to say I have zero confidence in the major networks when it comes to scifi. I am always hopeful, but never confident. So this news is no surprise to me. My guess is Day1 (NBC this fall if I recall) wont make it half a season - just not a good topic for mainstream, even if all us Jerichoholics watch it in substitute.

I feel just as you do. More times than not, when a network meddles, it doesn't turn out that good.

Does Virtuality have a future? Producer Michael Taylor looks ahead

If you've seen ads and heard descriptions for Fox's Virtuality and still aren't sure if it's a made-for-TV movie, the start of a new series or something else entirely, fret not: Creator and executive producer Michael Taylor is only too happy to classify the two-hour opus for you. "It's not a movie; it's not a single-serving film," Taylor said in an exclusive interview Thursday night in Los Angeles. "It is a two-hour backdoor pilot. That is what it is, and it makes no attempt to answer any of the questions it raises."

Speaking exclusively to SCI FI Wire at the premiere of what he hopes will be the first episode of a series, Taylor said that he and fellow executive producer Ronald Moore held nothing back while developing Virtuality, including the potential for multiple seasons. "Ron and I made absolutely no concessions, nor, for that matter, were we asked to," Taylor insisted.

"Fox is calling it a movie, but they want a lot of eyeballs on it too," Taylor added. "So we've conceived a whole season; we conceived multiple seasons. We know where this show is going, and it's going some really weird and interesting places. And that first season? Wow. It becomes an exciting thrill ride. It's a thriller, a story still about technology, it's a beautiful, crazy stew, and it's a hell of a ride."

I am. And I quite like Nikolaj Coster-Waldau - I recognize him from New Amsterdam, which was a series I really enjoyed and was really hoping for more.

I caught it on tv. How the hell can Fox say it's a movie? The ending is left fraking dangling! Duh. The second hour actually hooked me in. Pity if it doesn't get picked up for a series. Looks like it could be a good sci-fi show. I've said it already in this thread and after seeing the um "movie" I'll say it again, Fox needs to not try to make sci-fi main stream. I think that's what got me in the first hour. The show seemed more I guess "smarter" in the second half of the show.

I really enjoyed the pilot, it had alot of twists and turns that I really didn't see coming. I still somewhat believe that the whole thing was a virtual relaity and that they never left earth, this is some sort of tv "big brother" taken to a new level.

I loved Clea's character, but she totally seemed like the "Starbuck" of the show to me.
