Introduction Part One - The Game

This game wasn't planned out from the start. A group of barking mad Wraith fans met up in various Wraith thunk threads and our thunking led to a certain amount of role playing. As time went on we created a multi location game world and brought in original characters.

Kenny was turned into a coffee addict for a joke in the thunk threads - he now runs a coffee empire with shops across the Pegasus galaxy and on Earth. We have a hive ship orbiting a planet which hasn't been fully explored yet apart from a tropical island where some of the game characters live. One of the communities is made up of Scottish Wraith living a Celtic lifestyle in a hill fort located in the middle of the island. Ellia runs a Hippie Commune. Some of the SGA based Wraith characters wanted to dress as pirates so they now live in the Pirate Camp - they added a Tavern so they and any visitors could get merry (and noisy) every evening in a 'Pirates Of The Carribbean' setting. An alternate universe version of Terry Pratchett's Discworld turned up on the edge of the Pegasus galaxy - it has a stargate in our game world so characters can go to Ankh-Morpork if they fancy buying a rat on a stick from a Dwarf cook shop. Another hive ship full of original characters turned up every so often in the All Wraith Thunk Thread and Hive 95 has now got its own role playing thread. Hive 95 is the first hive ship in Pegasus to have an onboard roller coaster for thrills and excitement and some of its crew members enjoy an online, multi player role playing game called World Of Wraith. Then there's the mythological beings and creatures such as nymphs and dryads who like being barmaids at the Pirate Tavern, a hydra living in a swamp, a Sith (a Celtic fey who isn't at all like Tinkerbell) and a Cu Sith - a dog the size of a small cow with shaggy green fur.

What is the object of this game?

It's to have fun in a crazy game world which is sort of a cross between Stargate, Monty Python, Terry Pratchett's Discworld and Dallas (but with coffee and healthy, nutritious cream cakes instead of oil). Meanwhile, artists and writers have produced game related artwork and what we call mini fics - these are short stories about the characters and the game world and it's often been the case that something which turned up in a mini fic has become an established part of the game.

    What is a Worshipper?

The game definition has evolved far beyond the original concept of adopting a favourite SGA Wraith and thunking over him/her. In SGA, Wraith Worshippers are humans who serve the Wraith in a variety of ways and this aspect is now very much a part of the game along with the original approach. The Kenny's Hive role playing thread is about the Koffee Nirvana company and there's an elite group of humans working for him who know the 'Big Secret' - the real owner of the company is a Wraith. They include Evan Lorne (the human front man), Aiden Ford, whose window washing company is contracted to keep the Koffee Nirvana shop windows clean and Gloria Oglethorpe, an original character sales representative. All these humans are Worshippers as defined in SGA even though we've never said that they're doing any thunking.

What does the word 'Worshipping' mean in the Character Owners Guide?

When we started out in the thunk threads, 'Worshipping' meant hugging, kissing and anything beyond that. Our adopted Wraith soon started developing personalities and they now vary when it comes to how much personal attention they want because some are more reserved than others. We've retained the word because the same will be true of any character in the game world whether he/she is a Wraith, an Earth human, a Pegasus human or a member of any other species. If you see 'Can be hugged at all times' it means that the character concerned is a friendly, demonstrative person - Kit, a Wraith toddler, loves being hugged so players can role play hugging him whenever they feel like it. Steve, on the other hand, doesn't want to be hugged, let alone kissed, by anyone other than Todd's Pet and Starry Waters while Siric is antisocial so hugging him is a very unwise thing to do. These basic guides doesn't mean that everything is set in stone, of course. Two players role playing their characters can find that their characters develop a relationship over the course of the game and end up wanting to go somewhere private for a Worshipping session. Complicated? No, it's just like real life.

    What are potted plants?

When we started out in the thunk threads there were forests of artificial potted plants everywhere so characters could have a bit of privacy by disappearing behind them. Characters now have luxurious quarters, tents or huts so they don't need those potted plants any more. Disappearing behind the potted plants has since become a fun euphemism for the kind of Worshipping which requires characters to go somewhere private.

What does Wraith Worshippers Anonymous mean?

Worshipping a favourite Wraith can become an addiction. Humans who work for Kenny want to be anonymous where their status as Wraith Worshippers is concerned.

What does suck 'n puke mean?

This revolting phrase was inspired by some SGA Wraith feeding on a human's life force (sucking) and then returning it (puking). Examples of this are Todd and Sheppard (Common Ground), a Wraith and Larrin (Travellers) and the Wraith Commander and Ronon (Broken Ties).

What do Wraith eat in this game world?

The Wraith on Boris's Hive and the Hippies and Pirates on the Tropical Island tend to use Archimedes' feeding device which enables them to dine off the energy of the universe with, or without, an intermediary. The following mini fic explains what this device is and how to operate it.

    The Technomagic Solution.

Gabriel, who runs the Atlantis Personnel Takeaway on Boris's Hive, grows clones of some members of the Atlantis Expedition to order. At one time this was the only alternate way of feeding but it is falling out of use now as Wraith have become accustomed to the technological method.

There's also a very specialised feeding method involving Worshipping and suck 'n puke. Talk to the inhabitants of the Chill Out Hive for further details.

Eating ordinary food for pleasure is now a very popular activity, though, so the Commander from 'Condemned' (Shawn) has become a cordon bleu chef. Ellia from 'Instinct' also bakes delicious biscuits.

    What is creative vagueness?

You'll find a lot of that in the game. Characters have a way of getting to Earth in the blink of an eye without the Atlantis Expedition knowing. How does it work? Don't ask us because we've never come up with an explanation. Hive ships in Pegasus can pick up TV broadcasts from Earth but we don't know how. Characters can also access the Earth internet from hive ships but we haven't a clue why it's possible to do this.

    What are Mods?

Mods are supernatural beings who sometimes step in to direct the affairs of mortals. They have set certain rules for the universe and these rules must not be broken. The GateWorld forums are PG rated so if a Worshipping session starts getting too adult, so to speak, a Mod will swoop down out of the sky and throw a bucket of cold water over the characters concerned.

      Introduction Part Two - Characters

What is a game alter ego?

A game alter ego is a player's main character who represents him/herself in the game. Some players have based theirs on their real life selves while others wanted to get away from real life and be a Wraith or a Wraith/human hybrid. If you've ever longed to be a descended Ancient, a Genii or a Jaffa, here's your chance. How would a Jaffa get into the Pegasus galaxy? See Creative Vagueness. Not all players will have read Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, though, so we've tended to keep TPD-123 as a world which characters visit in mini fics or offstage apart from an occasional Discworld character turning up as a tourist. If you've really got your heart set on being a seamstress from Ankh-Morpork we'll have to find a way of making it clear what a seamstress is for everyone who hasn't read the books. (Remember the Mods, though.)

      What is an adopted character?

Once you've got used to the game world you can have secondary characters to role play as well as your game alter ego. Some characters who are present in the game world have established backgrounds while others are just extras at the moment - these include a number of SGA based Wraith and the nymphs and dryads. Others, such as SGA based Wraith Queens, aren't in the game world yet.

      What is an original character?

Many players created their own secondary characters. There are still sixty hive ships in our game world Pegasus galaxy so if you want a Wraith who looks exactly like Steve or Todd apart from a distinguishing tattoo you'll be able to have one. Are there female Wraith who aren't Queens? There are some on Hive 95 so I'm sure you'll find more on those sixty hive ships. We never saw any in SGA unless you count Ellia and the Keeper from 'Rising' but that doesn't mean a thing in a game world where there are nymphs, dryads and a Scottish fey. You could have a human working for Kenny or Ford's window washing company or any character you like as long as you can find a way of fitting him/her/it into the game world.

How do Wraith Queens fit into this game world?

Wraith Queens don't always get on all that well and like to be in command of their own hive ships. If a player wants a Wraith Queen as a game alter ego, an adopted character or an original character, the Queen concerned must have her own hive ship somewhere in the Pegasus galaxy. When such a Queen is active in the 'Boris's Hive or 'The Planet' role playing threads she must regard Ellia as the Primary. If she is active in the 'On Board Hive 95' role playing thread she must regard Queen Amadala as the Primary.

      Do we allow gay characters?

Of course, because they're supposed to exist in the fictional Stargate universe. Joe Mallozzi's blog has this entry where he said that he's thought of a recurring SGA character as being gay for several years. The same blog entry also reveals that Alicia Vegas was supposed to be gay but the all important scene in 'Search And Rescue' had to be cut for time.

Meanwhile, in Sunday this turned up in a conversation between Sheppard and Ronon -

      SHEPPARD ....are you datin’ anyone?

DEX: You mean like a woman?

SHEPPARD: Or a man. (He shrugs.)

DEX: No. I’m not ready yet.

We haven't got any gay characters at the time of writing this Introduction but if players want to introduce some into the game they are free to do so.

        Joining And Inactivity

Note: As the COH isn't really part of the game world, Todd's Pet and Starry Waters have the right to invite unregistered people to post in their thread as guests.

        -----

Before you read any further we're looking for people who think they'll be able to contribute to the role playing on a regular basis. By regular we mean having the time to come online most days of the week and make at least 2-3 role playing posts. We understand that it isn't always possible to do this, of course, because of things like holidays, illness or real life throwing up unexpected circumstances. - even the game organisers have real lives so can't be on their computers 24 hours a day for 365 days of the year.

The following procedure for joining is likely to seem complicated but it's designed to get new players into the game as quickly as possible. because the he game organisers can't be online all the time. We want to ensure that a prospective new player doesn't send a Private Message to someone who won't be around for a week or more due to a holiday, illness or some other real life reason.

        Creating a game alter ego

Introduction Part Two - The Characters will give you the basic information you need for creating the character who will represent you in the game. The first post in the Game Guides thread is an index with links which will take you the Character Guides so you can see what characters we have in the game so far.

When you have an idea for a game alter ego, do the following.
a: Submit a post in OOC chat saying that you're interested in joining the game and state the idea you have for a game alter ego. (OOC chat is the thread you're in now as you're reading these instructions.)

b: Make a note of the post number. (This is the white number next to the scales in the top right hand corner of your post)

c: Wait 24 hours for one of the game organisers to reply to your post so you can discuss details such as how your game alter ego idea can be fitted into the game and your character brought into the game world.

d: If your post hasn't been replied to after 24 hours it's possible that it was overlooked. Go to the Player List and click on the link for ciannwn, Draco-Stellaris or Draygon. This link will take you to the selected person's profile where you will see a form for posting a Visitor Message which will appear on the profile. Leave a message saying that you're interested in joining and have posted an application in OOC chat in Post No (whichever one it was). To be on the safe side leave the same Visitor Message on another game organiser's profile as well just in case your first choice is unable to get online.

e: After the finer details concerning your game alter ego idea have been sorted out with a game organiser you will need to write entries for the Character Guide and Character Owners Guide.

        The Guide Entries

        1: The Character Guide entry.

Important Note - . PleiadesAltariel, the record keeper, doesn't have time to create guide entries from other peoples' notes. If your entry isn't something which can be more or less copied and pasted into the Character Guide it will be rejected.

The Character Guide entry is for other players to refer to. It doesn't have to be very detailed at this stage because it can always be updated later with important changes/additions due to what happens over the course of the game. Here is the kind of information which should be included in an initial entry.

Name, Race, Gender, Appearance and Age if applicable. (Examples - a 30 year old human or a young Wraith. An Asgard who has gone from cloned body to cloned body will automatically be very old. The same is true of a descended Ancient even though his/her new physical body can look young.)

Background details. Where does this character come from? What did he/she do before we meet him/her in the game world? Does he/she have any skills or talents?

        Important personality/character traits.

        2: Character Owners Guide entry

State your wishes concerning Borrowing and Worshipping. The Rules give full details concerning what these terms mean in the game and the Character Owners Guide will show you how to word your entry. ciannwn is prepared to be lenient here, however, so as long as your wishes are stated clearly she won't mind rewording something if neccessary.

Once you've completed these entries, post them in OOC chat and wait until a game organiser has notified you that you have been officially accepted as a player. If this hasn't happened after 24 hours send a Visitor Message to ciannwn, Draco-Stellaris or Draygon. Again, to be on the safe side, leave the same Visitor Message on another game organiser's profile as well just in case your first choice is unable to get online.

        Subscribing To Threads

Once you've been accepted as a player you will need to subscribe to all the threads related to the game. Introduction Part Three - The Threads gives full instructions, including how to find the threads.

Instant Email Notification For Subscribed Threads

After subscribing to the threads you will need to set your Default Thread Subscription Mode to instant email notification if you haven't already done so. Go to -
        a: My controls

b: Left hand menu section headed Settings & Options

        c: Edit options

d: Scroll down the page to Messaging & Notification and Default Thread Subscription Mode is the second in the list.

When you are active in role playing -
a: Keep one browser window open on your email program In Box.

b: Use some kind of alert which notifies you when a new email has come in. For example, whenever ciannwn gets a new email a little box pops up at the bottom of her screen so she just switches over to her mail window. Opening a GW forum email gives her a link which, when clicked on, takes her to the relevant topic in the GW forum.

c: When you receive an email saying there's a new post in OOC chat, go to the post straight away and read what it says in case a player has announced they're leaving the game.

Instant email notification will also let you know when new role playing posts have been made. If the role playing threads are deserted when you come on, make appropriate role playing posts and then go off and do something else - join in another GateWorld topic, chat to friends via Visitor Messages, go to another website or read a book etc. When you get an email saying that somebody has made a role playing post just go along and see what's in the post.

Adopting A Character/Creating An Original Character

Once you've been playing for a while and know how the game works you can consider adopting one of the game characters who is in the Up For Adoption List. You also have the option of creating an original character if you prefer.

        Inactivity

        Planned Absence

If you know you won't be able to get online for a few weeks or months because you're going somewhere without internet access make an announcement in OOC chat. Say how long you will be away and what game explanation you want for your characters disappearing from the game world during your absence. If you prefer, you can give permission to role play your characters to another player during your absence.

        Unexpected Real Life Circumstances

If real life suddenly becomes unexpectedly hectic please post an explanation for your absence in OOC chat if you have a minute or two to spare. If at all possible, say what explanation you want for your characters disappearing from the game world. If you prefer, you can give permission to role play your characters to another player during your absence.

Important Note: If you're unable to make arrangements for your characters and their sudden disappearance is holding up the role playing, the game organisers claim the right to role play your characters. How much role playing will depend on whether or not a character is performing an important function in the game scenario.

Inactive For 3 Months Without Explanation.

If you are inactive in the game for three months the game organisers will assume that you have lost interest in it. Your characters, including your game alter ego, will be regarded as available for adoption or transferred to players who have been given Borrowing permission for these character if such players exists.

          The Rules

The rules are dealt with under the headings of Borrowing, Worshipping and Posting In Appropriate Threads. The Borrowing section is the lengthiest because it has to cover what people should do if they want to Borrow a character and what the owners of the characters should do if they receive such requests.

          Emergency Role Playing and Borrowing

Everyone has the right to say that someone's character finishes a conversation or completes an action if the owner suddenly disappears and their absence is holding up a role playing plot. Real life often throws up the unexpected such as a computer going wrong or a neighbourhood having a power cut etc. The aim of Emergency Role Playing is to shuffle the character or characters concerned into the background or say they follow everyone else to a new location etc. so the plot can continue with the remaining characters.

Mentioning somebody else's character in passing in a mini fic is also permitted as in these examples -

X sent a photograph to Ciannwn for inclusion in the Chronicles

Y sent a report about the malfunctioning door to Jimmy and the hive maintenance tech said he'd see to it as soon as possible.

Borrowing means fully role playing someone else's character, making him/her a central character in a mini fic or saying that he /she performed a lot of actions offstage.

Other peoples' characters covers the following -
          • Players' game alter egos
          • Adopted characters
          • Original characters

The Character Owners Guide lists (a) who owns which character (b) whether the owner is willing to let another player Borrow a character with permission and (c) any players who have been given permanent permission to Borrow a character. for role playing, mini fics or both.

2: How to Borrow or lend a character.
a: If you want to Borrow a character for role playing, a mini fic, or both contact the owner by way of visitor message or private message.
b: If you agree to lend a character post an announcement in OOC chat. Give the name of the player who is Borrowing the character and state whether the loan is for the purpose of a mini fic, role playing or both. If you aren't happy with the result of the other player's Borrowing, sort it out between yourselves by private message. If you decide that you not longer wish this player to use your character post an announcement in this thread stating the names of the player and character concerned.
c: If you give another player permanent permission to Borrow a character post an announcement in OOC chat. State.whether the permanent permission is for role paying only, mini fics only or both role playing and mini fics. The Character Owner Guide can then be updated accordingly.
d: If you've been given permission to Borrow other peoples' characters please keep them in character whether you're role playing them or including them in a mini fic. This doesn't mean you can never introduce them to anything new or put them into unfamiliar situations but ask yourself how these particular characters would react according to their personalities before doing so. The Game Characters Guide gives basic details for each developed character in the game world such as personality traits, occupations, hobbies, relationships and any important facts concerning their pasts etc. We hope this will be a useful resource for players who have permission to Borrow someone else's character.

3: Essential Characters. These are characters who perform an important function in the game world. They have owners but are role played by ciannwn, Draygon and Draco-Stellaris so they can be available for other characters to interact with if the owner isn't participating the game. These essential characters are special cases in some respects and here are two examples -
Zaddik is a herbalist who makes remedies such as hangover cures and natural beauty products such as shampoos and hair conditioners. He lives and works in the Hippie Commune so anyone can announce they're going to visit him to get whatever is needed. A player can also say he advised their game alter ego to try something new. This won't be counted as Borrowing because acting as a consultant is part of Zaddik's role in the community.

Gabriel runs the Atlantis Personnel Takeaway. Saying that one of your characters has placed an order or is going to feed on a completed order won't be counted as Borrowing because producing clones for Wraith food is his role in the community.

          Worshipping

Do not role play your characters Worshipping other peoples' characters without permission. Worshipping, in the context of the Character Owners Guide, covers the following -
          • Hugging.
          • Kissing
          • Anything beyond that.

For further explanation of the term see - What does the word 'Worshipping' mean in the Character Owners Guide?' in Introduction Part One.

If players find that their characters have developed relationships over the course of the game, the Character Owners Guide can be updated where these characters are concerned. Other players will then have essential information such as Miss X is happy to be hugged and kissed by her boyfriend but doesn't want every male in the game world hugging and kissing her whenever they feel like it.

          Posting in appropriate threads.

1: The role playing threads are for role playing content only with one exception.

If something in a role playing post requires an explanation, an explanation can be presented in the following format at the end of the post as long as it is short and precise. An explanation which requires more than this should be posted in OOC chat. Here is an example.

(OOC: in reality, the event will post on tuesday, but the exact time won't likely be 7pm EST, US. But sometime in the late afternoon or evening).

2: If you know you're going to be absent from the role playing for a long period of time. Post an announcement in OOC chat eg- I have to go for a couple of hours now or it's late so I'm off to bed.

3: Game related issues which require players being out of character These posts go into OOC chat. Game related issues include (1) questions about anything to do with the game (2) discussions about whether or not to add a new role playing thread etc. (3) new/updated character guides and new/updated information about borrowing and sharing.

4: Game related mini fics, artwork and signatures These posts go into OOC chat along with any comments other players wish to make about them.

5: Fanfic, signatures and artwork not related to the game These posts should to into whichever GateWorld forum threads are the most appropriate.

6: General thunking over SGA characters, everyday chat and discussions about characters and stories in Stargate Atlantis These posts should go into whichever GateWorld forum threads are the most appropriate. The Wraith Defenders Club in the Stargate Atlantis forum is a popular thread for discussing Wraith as they were presented in the show.

7: Game Guides Thread. Nothing must be posted in the Game Guides thread by anyone other than the game organisers (ciannwn, Draygon, Starry Waters, Todd's Pet and Draco-Stellaris.

The first of the Out Of Character game discussions.

I've noticed that some people have ended up on the island beach in The Planet role playing thread. Boris was on his hive when he mentioned the party. I think it might be easier if we removed Boris's Hive as a location in The Planet role playing thread and set up a new role playing thread called Boris's Hive.

I agree with that. It can get really confusing of exactly where you are

I've noticed that some people have ended up on the island beach in The Planet role playing thread. Boris was on his hive when he mentioned the party. I think it might be easier if we removed Boris's Hive as a location in The Planet role playing thread and set up a new role playing thread called Boris's Hive.
                    I think that´s a good idea.

The Planet thread covers a number of locations - Boris's Hive, The Mainland and The Island which also has a number of locations on it. It's going to get very confusing because we won't know who is meant to be on the hive ship and who is meant to be on the island. It will be even worse if more people join later.

It didn't matter so much before because we just muddled through somehow in the AWTT. I think we've got to be more precise now, though, because this is an official RPG forum game.

Since there are many differnt locations on Boris's hive itself, I almost wonder if it wouldn't be worth making a new thread for it (no pressure though )
If found, is probably lost on the way to Azaroth or the Pegasus Galaxy

That's another good reason for making Boris's Hive a separate role playing thread. The Planet thread would just be everything on the Planet then.

I'll make a new thread after Heroes. If I try to do it now I could end up making typing errors or putting the wrong icon on.

                            Game update.

We now have a separate role playing thread for Boris's Hive which can be found here.

                            http://forum.gateworld.net/showthrea...8#post10096048

Anything happening on Boris's Hive will now be in this thread. The Planet thread will now be for anything happening on the Planet, including the Mainland and Island.

Anyone on the Planet who wishes to communicate with Boris's hive will need to use telepathy or have a communications device with them.

I'll update the guides and introduction tomorrow.

Shawn's kitchen now has a blackboard for notes and messages. This has been added to the Game Locations guide for Boris's Hive.
