This entire roleplay is new to all of us. With having been so used to running things the "other way" on the thunk thread, the new in-game time system is something most of you will need to adjust to. I've rp-ed quite a bit in the past, so the in-game time system is nothing new to me. The Grand Opening for Deveareax will be a chance for us all to work the kinks out and get used to the i-game system. ^.^

I've had another go at amending the rules. The bit in red could be deleted because I've now said that OOC chat comments at the bottom of role playing posts can be used for two things.

The exception to this rule is real life doing unexpected things when you're participating in a role playing session. If your sudden disappearance is going to confuse others put a brief explanation in OOC chat - eg. "There's somebody at the door. I'll be back in a few minutes" If you don't have time to do this and you find that the game has been held up when you come back put the relevant explanation in OOC chat - eg. "My computer threw a fit and I had to restart it."

c: OOC content in role playing threads which is permitted.

The best way of explaining it is by giving two examples. This one is from TechnoWraith in the Boris's Hive role playing thread.

    http://forum.gateworld.net/showpost....1&postcount=83

At the end of the post is -

(OOC: in reality, the event will post on tuesday, but the exact time won't likely be 7pm EST, US. But sometime in the late afternoon or evening).

If something in a role playing post requires an explanation, an explanation can be presented in the above format at the end of the post as long as it is short and precise. An explanation which requires more than this should be posted in OOC chat.

The second example is from Draco-Stellaris in the Boris's Hive role playing thread.

    http://forum.gateworld.net/showpost....&postcount=191

(OOC: Have to leave now, don't know yet if I'll be online tonight because of the weekly horse riding.)

The above is immediately noticeable and saves people having to check OOC chat all the time in case somebody's left the game. Do not make an OOC comment at the bottom of your own post saying "Goodnight" or "By for now", though. If you want to say goodnight to someone leave a Visitor Message on his/her profile.

What do people think? Shall we try that for now when we have to leave the game? Should we also use OOC comments at the bottom of posts to explain sudden absences such as "My computer threw a fit" or would it be better to post explanations for unexpected absences in the OOC chat thread?

I think it's sometimes easier to make a OOC comment, since you may have vanished from only the one thread and only need to explain your sudden absence there.

Your comment has helped me see a flaw in my cunning plan.

This is a multi role playing thread game and one player can have a few of their characters doing something on Boris's Hive while the rest are doing things on The Planet - we'll soon be having characters doing things in the Hive 95 thread as well. If a player has to leave the game for a long time it means he/she will have vanished from all the threads he/she has been posting in. The OOC message will have to be posted to all the threads a player is in just in case another player has all their characters in one thread and doesn't see an absence warning in another thread.

Ah. In those sorts of cases then, I think posting here would be a wise move (so long as everyone one notices)

That would be OK for me because I have my thread subscription set to instant email notification.and use an email notifier which alerts me to new emails as soon as they come in. This means that I don't have to keep checking 'My Controls' to see if any new posts have been added to threads I'm subscribed to. People who don't use my system would have to keep checking via My Controls to make sure that nothing's been added to this thread.

I personally don't have any problems with OOC in the RP threads. But, it would be easier for someone who uses multiple characters to tell others that they are leaving on the OOC Chat. I usually only play a few at a time and bring them to the other threads with me, so I haven't encountered this problem yet, but it would still be a good idea. It would probably be too much to go to each thread and say that you are leaving if you have many characters.

OK folks, I'm going to be very blunt and to the point here.

I'm 60, years old, I've got arthritis in the spine and a dodgy heart - I nearly died from a heart attack a few years ago and could have another one if I'm not careful.

I've been working flat out for weeks trying get this game going in the RPG forum. I help people sort out their character information for the Characters Guide and Character Owners guide, I update all the records, I'm trying to add things to the game guides all the time (new things that come up and old stuff which I'm searching for in the thunk threads) and role play as well if I can so a lone player in a thread doesn't feel neglected.

When I make a post in OOC chat asking players for information (such as which of their characters they want at a particular event if we have to apply) or opinions on things such as suggestions for rule changes PLEASE respond in this thread. I've reached the point where I'm starting to feel ill with sheer exhaustion - the last thing I need is having to contact everyone individually and tell them "There's a discussion point in OOC chat so please go along and post your comments.

    Thank you.

    OK, then. How about this?

Everyone sets their Thread Subscription Mode to instant email notification and keeps one browser window open on their email program. They keep checking for emails while playing and, as soon as they see a notification for a post in OOC chat, they look at the post straight away.

The only other option is using one of those instant messenger things but they don't suit everyone's computer.

Sure, that sounds great. I didn't know that GW had that. I will have to check it out.

Anyone who doesn't know about this can find it by going to -

    1: My controls

2: Left hand menu section headed Settings & Options

    3: Edit options

4: Scroll down the page to Messaging & Notification and Default Thread Subscription Mode is the second in the list.

Well, I've been reading the thread discussions here. It seems that we're coming to a general concensus on how to handle OOC comments. And that's good.

    In general, in summary:

Quick, concise comments are used in the roleplay threads. Again, the point is quick and concise.

Anything more than a quick sentence should be placed here.

We've all worked hard at keeping the roleplay game functioning, and Ciannwn has worked extra hard getting the entire game up and running as well as building and updating the game guides for everyone. So special thanks to ciannwn for getting this game up to begin with. ^.^

If you think what you want to say OOC is too long to post in the roleplay game thread, be safer and post here. There will be no harm in posting all the OOC what-not in the universe here in the OOC thread. It's why this thread exists. ^.^ What we want to avoid is long, drawn out OOC comments in game threads, which detracts from the roleplay in the end.

I'll tell everyone to set their Default Thread Subscription Mode to instant email notification and have their email program open in another window. The problem with people using My Controls to see if any new posts have been added to subscribed threads is they might forget to keep checking.

For the Grand Opening event tomorrow:

-Please see the On Board Hive 95 thread and read the pre-luding posts. It will kind of get you in the mood so to speak, and give you an idea of what's happening up to this point.

-Please note: there is a possibility that i may have to work tomorrow night instead of tomorrow morning as originally scheduled. I'll know tomorrow (of all times ). If I have to to work tomorrow night, I will open the Event before i go to work, and you guys can start posting. Otherwise, the event will proceed as normal.

-Remember that we are using the in-game timing system. So the Grand Opening will progress as each player involved posts their part. In turn, the next player will post a response. While it isn't ideal, making a consecutive post can be done if you're advancing the event, or if you're playing a character who is taking part in the next section of the story. Since some of us are playing multiple characters, it's probably best to combine all character interactions into a single post. For example, Zidane, Morrokko and Deblane may all take their actions in one post, instead of making 3 separate posts for each wraith. Consecutive posting is against GW forum rules, but they are lenient sometimes. With this in mind, I think it's best to combine multiple character actions in a single post. If you hit the post limit, I don't see why you can't make a consecutive post to continue your section of the story.

-The Grand opening will post either after work or before work. If after work, then the even will proceed as normal. If before work, post as you see fit and then i will catch up and get the party moving again when i get home. Either way, please check this thread tomorrow for updates.

-This event will last a couple days (real-life time scale). This will essentially be a dry run of the in-game timing system, so we'll work out kinks in the system as we go along with the Grand Opening. Be sure to check this thread regularly during the event to see about anything important.

-Most of all, enjoy and have fun!

We'll soon be starting our first formal attempt at 'in game' time role playing. OOC chat will now become every bit as important to the game as the Hive 95 role playing thread.

Our normal way of doing things was to make our player game alter egos leave the game whenever we did. When it was time to go to bed a player game alter ego would say "I'm off to bed now. Goodnight" and everyone else would say "Goodnight" back. Things will be very different with the Grand Opening event, however, because it will be running over several days of players' 'real life' time. If your game alter ego is in the middle of eating dinner, he/she wouldn't announce "I'm off to bed so I'll see you in the morning." Players will now be going to bed and leaving their game alter egos at the event so they can come back the next day and carry on playing from where they left off.

If a player is leaving the game for some reason, other players still need to know about it and this is where OOC chat comes in. When you have to leave the game for any length of time, make an announcement in OOC chat. eg. "I'm off to bed now" or "Some relatives have paid an unexpected visit so I'll be away for the rest of the evening" or "I've got to go shopping now and won't be back for a few hours."

Posting such announcements won't be much use if some players keep track of new posts to subscribed threads by using My Controls, though - keeping up to date would mean having to check via My Controls every couple of minutes. It won't be much use if OOC chat is regarded as a topic to look at sometime when we get round to it either. The following is based on a method I've always used for keeping track of new posts - the actual details will vary from player to player depending on which email program they use.

1: Set your Default Thread Subscription Mode to instant email notification. Anyone who doesn't know about this can find it by going to -

    a: My controls

b: Left hand menu section headed Settings & Options

    c: Edit options

d: Scroll down the page to Messaging & Notification and Default Thread Subscription Mode is the second in the list.

2: Keep one browser window open on your email program In Box.

3: Use some kind of alert which notifies you when a new email has come in. For example, whenever I get a new email a little box pops up at the bottom of my screen so I just switch over to my mail window. Opening a GW forum email gives me a link which, when clicked on, takes me to the relevant topic in the GW forum.

4: When you receive an email saying there's a new post in OOC chat, go to the post straight away and read what it says in case a player has announced they're leaving the game.

No system is perfect, of course, as my dying monitor shows. If my husband didn't have his own computer I couldn't have made a post about my monitor in OOC chat.

Instant email notification will also let you know when new role playing posts have been made. If the role playing threads are deserted when you come on, make appropriate role playing posts and then go off and do something else - join in another GW topic, chat to friends via Visitor Messages, go to another website or read a book etc. When you get an email saying that somebody has made a role playing post just go along and see what's in the post.

Hi folks - just for your info:

Greg won't be available for a couple of weeks.

He's concerned I'm a bit too morbidly intense for Steve to deal with all on his own just now. Greg knows he's my rock and he thinks I need him around on a more permanent basis for a while, so he's going to be staying with me to help Steve out for a week or two until I'm feeling more my old self again.

But he wants Ciannwn to know that, if she really needs him, she's just to holler and he'll come visit.

Edit: And, right on cue I've been getting my Greg siggies all day today!
