SGU to air in Fall 2009

The SCI FI Channel will premiere its new original series and heir to the Stargate franchise, Stargate Universe, this fall, GateWorld has learned.

Original plans were for a summer 2009 premiere, which traditionally has been the premiere window for new seasons of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Showtime and SCI FI, along with other networks, originally targeted the summer months — despite lower overall television viewership — in order to avoid competing with the big network premieres in the fall.

In recent years, however, cable networks have proved that they can go toe-to-toe with the broadcast networks, and channels like SCI FI now program original series year-round. Last fall, Stargate Atlantis aired the second half of its season, alongside the very successful October launch of Sanctuary.

Why am I reminded of the midseason hiatus of SGA S3? I actually hope they continue the format that we had in S5 SGA. I much prefer the smaller breaks over a huge mid-season break. Who also wants to bet that Sanctuary will also air with SGU next fall?

This shows confidence in the product. Premiering a new show against heavy network competition...But they'll have to kick it up a notch wih the advertising. Like they've been advertising BSG's last episodes.

Apart from the release of the, new version of children of god, which has been finish and is waiting for release.

I happy they have delayed the release until the fall, because it will give the production team longer to write the episodes, I always thought they were leaving the casting news a bit late anyway for a summer release, so it not unexpected. Also Scifi got a couple of new shows coming out in the summer and they probably did not want SGU to get all the lime light and take attention away from Warehouse 13 and other new shows.

Although I think they'll never replicate the success they had with their SG-1/SGA/BSG combo, I think SciFi should try to bring back a strong SciFi Friday. Get Eureka and Sanctuary 20 episodes and stick them with SGU. Eureka would kick things off, then SGU, then Sanctuary.

I know they want year-round programming, but they should stick new shows in the summer, when there's no competition.

Waiting a little longer for SGU kind of sucks, but I really think it will end up being worth the wait.

Sounds like a statement of intent to me, it'll be a big risk, but if it pays off and they can land ratings anywhere near as good as the big networks then they'll be laughing. Out of interest does anyone know when Caprica is scheduled to premier?

its probably not until nest year but who knows it could possibly air with sgu and sancuary...now that would be a great scifi friday

Yeah, I really miss those days. When it really was a powerful Sci-Fi Friday. They would be wise to try and recapture some of that old magic.

Personally, I enjoy having all different programming spread out through the week, and now that Sci Fi has Ghost Hunters (2 shows), Caprica, SGU, Sanctuary, Warehouse 13, Eureka and I think there are a couple of new shows I am missing, it's really possible that they could move their established series (Caprica/San/SGU) to Sci Fi Fridays, while keep Eureka on Tuesdays and GH (2 shows) on Wensdyas, while put the new shows on Mon/Thursday. That would be really, really good -- but we shall see how they do it.

Anyway, back to waiting for SGU...at least they are showing confidence in their new baby. That is good for all of us.

Basically, SCI FI is confident after SGA having their most successful season half Since Season 2, to run SGU in the fall with the big dogs.

personally.... I like the idea of go through the whole season one episode a friday, no breaks but I know that'll never happen.

I am still excited about it. Just give the show a chance. Be optimistic, but hopeful. I mean really, the whole premise is kinda strange, but it could be good!

Yep. I agree. Atlantis looked weird too. and it turned out good. (No one argue with me about this since this is not an Atlantis thread )
