Who is the gay character on Atlantis?

You get 5-10 years of a show and then suddenly, poof, this comes out? And the main thing would be why?

In a lot of ways, the Atlantis expedition is about diversity, and I think it would be nice to see a character who just happened to be gay. I remember hearing Whoopi Goldberg talking about how happy she was as a little girl watching Star Trek to see a "a black lady in space". It might do some good now for people to see a gay person in space.

I agree that it would be silly to out a character who has been established as heterosexual, and that there is the potential for it to be handled very badly. If the character's sexuality was very incidental, I think it could be quite positive—even if it was someone like Chuck, who's very much in the background.

If we could vote for several characters, I would vote Lorne, Carson and Kolya. Kolya had such a weird chemistery with Sheppard! (and sometimes with McKay).

And Carson...well, to me, he's as gay as one can be. But in the show he dates girls, so maybe he's closeted, or maybe he's bi (I really could picture all the girls he's seem to be into as hag though. And he did say Cadman and he broke up because their first kiss happened through Rodney! And Lucius' potion seemed to work on him in a very...well, for the other male characters, it was more like adoration, but he really looked in love! Elizabeth herself said he was "smitten", and at the end of Irresistible *what and awful ep* Sheppard asked him if he had "lingering desires". And during The Return part 1, Carson seemed to want to say something very specific and feeling-related to Rodney, who didn't let him. Soooo...).

as for the civilians, different countries equal different ideas on how they feel about a person being gay!

I still can't understand why people bring the "Don't Ask, Don't tell" policy in SGA. Joe Mallozzi said that they already had plans for Capt. Vega being gay and in the end of the Whispers eppie to ask Keller out on a date, but they decided to kill her off instead.
This shows that the TPTB have no regret for the DADT US military policy. IMO I hope Lorne's gay it would add some great depth to his character and make it even more interesting to watch.

Awww Carson's just really sensitive I think, even though he is exceptionally camp, which I know doesn't mean he's gay, I just love it!!!

I'm not sure I can recall specifically, but wasn't Captain Alicia Vega in the U.S. military too? If so, why would they have a problem showing Lorne might be gay if they had just filmed a scene showing Vega was gay, even if it was cut for time? Wouldn't the DADT policy apply to lesbians as well as gays?

Yeah, it just struck me (so came back to the thread) that wait, Vega's US military... if she 'outs' herself, she's out, of the military, that is (DADT and all). And yes, applies both women and men.

The DADT policy is brought up as it's a fact of the US military, and basically, all military personnel on Atlantis seem to be from the U.S.

I think Zelenka is straight. Remember Quarantine, when he was looking at Carter's dirty pillows. Yup, the guy likes the woman.

So what, your decision is based on this? I know it is you opinion, but I would like to disagree.

Men don't have to be gay in order to like painting. My son likes shopping and cooking but he's not gay so things like these don't count as clues either. All that we're left with is Lorne not going out of his way to look down women's low cut tops or having a relationship with a woman at some time or another.

My guess is that TPTB have looked at their SGA characters and picked one who they can say is gay because they never bothered to give him a background.. This is why I voted for Chuck.

Thank you to the voice of sense, who says artsits (male or otherwise) have to be gay, I am a Lorne fan and i do not and won't believe it.- And this is my opinon.

He is probably being a gentlemen to a superior officer (which Carter is!), he is a work hard type of guy and I think he is being picked on becuase he doesn't look donw tops, makes him a target.

It's not Lorne because of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Well, based on the interview, it must be Earth personnel, since I don't think any of the aliens could be described as going back anywhere. So, it must be Lorne. He's the only recurring character worthy of note that hasn't looked down Sam's top. Any of the other technicians haven't been in it enough for a "I'm going back to see my boyfriend" scene to be worth anything. No offense to the Chuck lovers, but I'm afraid he's just not that important.

While I would think Lorne, he would have difficulty as a US serviceman he would still have to fall to the don't ask don't tell policy, which would add realism for us not knowing about it.

Honestly who knows if TPTB (or JM specifically) are even thinking about DADT when considering whether a character is gay. Personally I doubt it, but we won't know unless JM answers that particular question.

Vega was GAY AND MILLITARY!!! So it is obviouse TPTB where not taking the "DADT" rule into consideration, also if he tell a civi then it not breaking the "DADT" rule.

I dont see how it would change Mjr Lorne's character if he were to "come out"?

This doesnt happen in real life. Besides, there are ways to out a military character and still leave it unknown to the rest of the cast, or known parts of the cast that arent military. There have even been a few examples posted.

I still believe it could be lorne, and I think he could pull off a gay character well. After all, not all gay people are pride-flag wearing, parade going flamers in tap dance shoes and tutu's. I think it'd be awesome to have a more "manly" gay man that knows how to shoot things and fight in hand-to-hand combat!

Now what I wouldnt believe is it being Sheppard or Ronon. Their characters are mostly set up already and it would definately be a WTF moment!

In the Military its a safety rule. there are some serious homophobes in the military.

Woolsey has excellent taste in women! Conrad was a babe, no way can I believe that Woolsey is the gay guy. And yeah, he was married.
