    Default Forum running slow?

Sorry if this is the wrong place but the past week the forum has been running sooooooooooo slow for me. Every other site is running fine so I guess it cant be my connection, I've cleared all my history and cookies and still its taking an age for pages to load ... anyone else experiencing the same problem?

It's been running very slow for me too. I know that many people have mentioned this in the 'Ask the Mods' thread, and Darren and Greg have been informed about the problem.
Hopefully things will speed up again soon.

This is where patience is a virtue. We all have come to the conclusion that its GW world server. A problem like this however will take a few hours for Greg to correct. We just have to wait for to get time to correct the problem. I predict it will be sometime this weekend

our current suspect is that it might be an ad that's trying to load off a slow server

those that are using flashblock are experiencing a slowdown so it might be something that isn't playing well with the flashblock, or the flash itself

and if it is an ad, there's not much we can do beyond simply labor through and wait for its time to be over

I wonder if this has anything to do with my slow problems. Since we have a thread just for this, I'll put a link here.

The phone company is upgrading some underground line system in the neighbor, so I thought that was the reason why the internet was running slow.

If we follow Sky's ad theory, the slowness seemed to start when this Star Wars ad for Cartoon Network appeared

What idea is that? I don't have any kind of blocker running and it is slow for every single page with different ads so not sure how that can be the problem.

    here's the whole post http://forum.gateworld.net/showpost....postcount=7057

pretty much turn off your javascripts on your browser and that seems to speed up the forum greatly but you lose some functional

or if you use firefox use ad block plus http://adblockplus.org/en/installation

the slowness seems to be connected to the ads on the forum currently

mostly it's little things you can't click on smiles on the right when creatign a psot or any of the others buttons.

when you go to give rep the action redirects you to a new page were you can type the comment you want (basliclly just like the old days) this also goes for search.

the cool thing is if you're using ie you can now see the whole profile stats, ect.. but it's all on one page instead of tabs

and the site may look a little odd when you open a new page or fresh for a few seconds

    definitely noticeably slower this week

Question, (That I really don't want to go dig for the answer, cause I know I read it before
Do blocking the ads generate less money for gateworld? (Or does it only actually make $ when they're clicked?)

Yeah, unfortunately it does generate less revenue for the site, in that if you can't see an ad, you can't click it.

I wish it were possible to retain the text-only ads while blocking any animated or image heavy ones. I don't think there are any ad blockers with that function. I fully understand that sites, especially big and resource-heavy sites such as GW, need the revenue created by ads to keep running. However, there should be some way to limit the nuisance. I think that if a particular ad slows down the system significantly for a majority or large minority of users, it would be just as valid a reason to request deletion of the ad from the scheme as having an offensive ad removed.

I'm not using in 'flashblock' - and I'm having running really slow. I don't think it's a particular ad because the forum was slow for every page I clicked regardless of what ad appeared.

If our pleas don't get anything done, maybe loss of revenue will.
