Yes, you should spend a good deal of time getting to know the greatness that is Rachel's fic. She not only does some amazing S/J, but she understands and uses the whole team. Her Aftershocks series is an icomparable tour de force.

Start with A Pond with No Fish (my favorite S/J fanfic of all time), then move on to Let Go and Hold On. After that just go to Rachel's Profile and dive in.

You have so much great reading ahead of you!

You should definitely read Rachel's work--it is so awesome! I also suggest reading Sally Reeve. Her fics have actually had me in tears.

It's a common thing to do with archtypal heroes, to make them loners.

In popular culture, there is a certain romanticism in the idea of the loner since he or she is seen as special and unique. This can be attributed to the notion that truly great people often lurk in the shadows of societies that espouse corrupt or superficial standards of existence. As a result, the concept of a lonely hero is a recurring theme in stories.

I wonder if that's because they never actually introduced his family other than Sara & Charlie...and given his age, one would think he would have someone left in the family but if he did he'd make more of a conscious effort to make that fact known...but he never did...or rather the writers never made any effort to bring them in. Sam on the other hand has her dad & brother and we know what happened to her mum and that she has an uncle Irving. And we knwo about Daniel & Teal'cs and even General Hammonds family - weord hw Jack never seemed to have one. Yeah, it is sad.

I recently read a fic where it reveals MacGyver as Jack's cousin! He shows up at the cabin when the whole team is there... now where did I read that? I'll see if I can find it if anyone is interested.

There are a number of Mac related to Jack fics (most of which are, IMO, incredibly stupid). While it's not a "related" fic, one of very few good ones is Bad Pennies.
