none of his back story is explained, they write it off with:

DANIEL: So it's true.

OMA: He tricked me.

DANIEL: How? You couldn't tell?

OMA: No. He must have found some old, Ancient research on ascension. When he came to Kheb he knew what he was doing. When I realised the horrible mistake that I had made I tried to undo it, but I couldn't. That's when the Others stepped in.

DANIEL: I don't understand. They only sent him halfway back. Why not all the way?

it doesn't explain the research, nor how he found the research, nor how he knew to look for it in the first place.
where as my explanation gives why Anubis is featured in the film, not an Anubis guard, but in the credits, it is Anubis

why he is in the service of Ra, Ra having stumbled upon ascension on his own, a fluke, but because he did it on his own, and, he was more concerned with ONLY his little corner of the galaxy, the Ancients left him alone completely......of course, because he is ascended, he knows a lot of really cool stuff, and he brags about it being ascended and all the stuff he knew......Anubis learned ABOUT ascension from Ra. Ra wouldn't teach him. Anubis, having learned a ton of stuff about ascension from Ra, has enough info to trick an ascended, he goes out looking for one who will help him ascend, he finds Oma, and tricks her........she tries to correct it, but it takes the others to step in, and BECAUSE it was Oma, because Anubis did not ascend on his own, the other warned him, that he couldn't use his knowledge from being ascended unless he would have otherwise learned it........so, back to Ra's service to learn more
