His name is really jonathan oniell wether or not his middle name is jack or its just a nickname i dont know.
Someone named John being called Jack isn't really that uncommon in the US.
Since, I dunno, forever?
Why are men named John nicknamed Jack?
A famous Jack now comes to mind : John F. Kennedy.
Neither have I.
So who decides which Johns will be called Jack, and which ones are called John?

My Uncle was called Jack in University. His middle name was John, and he was in a dorm with 2 other JohnsLuck of the draw I'm guessing- also personal preference...
(don't ask me why they didn't just call him Stephen... :| )
John is also known as Jock up here in Scotland. At least, most Johns I know are called Jock by friends and family. I should know - my late grandfather was called John, and so is my father and one of my friends. My middle name is John as well.
Hey! What's wrong with Stephen?![]()
"It is said that the future is always born in pain. The history of war is the history of pain. If we are wise, what is born of that pain matures into the promise of a better world, because we learn that we can no longer afford the mistakes of the past."
Well Stargate was the first example of it I had ever heard and I'm in the UK and have known many Jonathans...my dad's one...and none have ever been nicknamed as jack...I knew a couple of Jack's...and they were called Jack straight-up
I'm a Jonathan, and I don't even like having my name shortened to "John" (especially if someone else introduces me as "John", which annoys me no end). If anyone tried to call me "Jack", I think they'd get a slap upside the head.
Back on topic, I'd never heard of anyone called John or Jonathan being called "Jack" before Stargate... I just assumed it was an American thing (no offense). But then, I've never understood how "William" can be shortened to "Bill", or "Richard" to "Dick".
Coming soon to Syfy and DVD... hopefully!
My son also has one of those weird names. He's a Robert but we shorten it to Bobby because that's my hubby's best buddy partner in crime from school. Some people have tried to call him Robby. Which means me wonder how in the world did an R turn into a B to come up with Bobby?![]()

Shortening names isn't just an American thing. I live in Mexico and my sister Patricia has always responded to the name of "Patty"; likewise my sister Gabriela is "Gaby", Mom is "Conchita" ( her name is Concepcion ), My nephew Alejandro is "Alex", my uncle Francisco is "Pancho" and my cousin Guadalupe is "Lupita".
My christian name is Marcela, but most people call me Marce or Marcelita ( "little Marcela" ). My sisters have always called me "Lolo", God knows why![]()
In Scotland, some Johns are called Ian as both names have the same roots and meaning![]()

And then there's Jim, a nickname for James, and sometimes "Drew" as a nickname for Andrew (instead of Andy), Dick for Richard (instead of Ricky), Bob for Robert, and numerous others.
