V ~ Victorian era - It was in the Victorian era (the year 1879 to be precise) that the Torchwood Institute was set up by Queen Victoria (as seen at the conclusion of the 2006 story Tooth and Claw). After leaving Satellite 5 and the year 200,100 following the events of the 2005 series' 2-part finale Bad Wolf, Captain Jack Harkness used his Vortex Manipulator to head for Cardiff in the 21st century Earth to meet up with the Doctor but accidentally ended up in the the year 1869 (events mentioned in the 2007 story Utopia). In 1899, Jack came to the attention of the Torchwood Institute and was offered employment. He initially turned the offer down but after being told his fortune and learning he wouldn't see the Doctor for a century, Jack changed his mind and took the job (as seen in the Torchwood episode Fragments).

Other stories that have taken place in the Victorian era either in part or in full are: The Evil of the Daleks, The Unquiet Dead, The Chase, The Gunfighters, Ghost Light, Time Lash, and The Talons of Weng-Chiang.)

W ~ Weeping Angels - The Weeping Angels are a group of psychopathic hunters featured in the Tenth Doctor episode "Blink". Because their physiology is quantum-locked they turn to stone when observed, covering their eyes with their hands and arms to prevent themselves looking at each other: this gives the impression that they are 'weeping'. This acts as a defence mechanism; they cannot be killed while petrified (though equally they cannot kill). They can move with great speed, being fast enough to move across a street in a single blink of the eye.

According to the Doctor, the Angels are as old as the universe (or very nearly) but no one really knows where they come from. He also describes them as "creatures of the abstract", "the lonely assassins", and "the only psychopaths in the universe to kill you nicely", because their method of "killing" doesn't do anything of the sort: a touch sends their victims into the past to live out their lives before they were even born; the Angels then feed on the "potential energy" of the lives their victims would have lived in the present.

The Doctor decided she needed a better life and locked her out of the Tardis and left without her leaving her to live a more stable life.

I don't wait for a letter I know something about but when it is something I don't know and have to research it takes me a while to type it up. So it will be best if I make sure that those who know more aren't posting at the same time because that will probably happen more often. It's OK.

Y ~ Yates, Mike - Mike Yates was a captain and the second in command of the British division of the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce. His first appearance was in the 1971 story Terror of the Autons. After betraying the Doctor and Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart in the 1973 story Invasion of the Dinosaurs, Yates was allowed to leave UNIT quietly. His next and final appearance was in the 1974 story Planet of the Spiders although an illusion of Yates appeared in the 1983 story The Five Doctors. This illusion was part of the Game of Rassilon and it attempted to separate the 3rd Doctor from Sarah Jane Smith and hinder his attempts to reach Rassilon's tomb. Mike Yates was played by Richard Franklin.

That's a good idea. That's fine to do here. I'm cool with that. That just shows that you've gone to somewhere like Wikipedia to do research on Doctor Who and find something to fit a letter but hopefully also learn a bit too about the Whoniverse.

Z ~ Zygon - The Zygons first appeared in the Fourth Doctor serial 'Terror of the Zygons', where it was revealed that centuries ago, the Zygon homeworld was destroyed in a stellar explosion. A craft escaped and somehow made it to Earth, where it then crashed into Loch Ness.

When the Doctor encountered the Zygons, they were led by a warlord named Broton. Broton wished to conquer the world to allow a refugee fleet of Zygons to colonize Earth.

The Zygons have shape-shifting abilities, allowing them to replicate the appearance of another being, but they must keep the subject alive in order to use its body print. This skill was vital in their concealment and in their scheme to seize power despite their small numbers. The Zygons were also accompanied by an armoured cyborg creature called the Skarasen, the lactic fluid of which was necessary for them to feed. Broton planned to unleash the Skarasen (or Loch Ness Monster as it was known) as part of a bid to conquer the Earth.

A ~ Attack of the Cybermen - This story opened the 1984 - 1985 series and starred Colin Baker as "The Doctor" and Nicola Bryant as "Perpugilliam 'Peri' Brown". This story features links to previous stories like An Unearthly Child, The Tenth Planet, The Tomb of the Cybermen, The Invasion, & Resurrection of the Daleks. There are brief mentions of past companions Susan Foreman, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot, Tegan Jovanka. This story is also notable as being the one and only time in which the Doctor managed to repair his TARDIS' Chameleon Circuit..kind of. The Cyber Controller is seen for the second time since the 1967 story The Tomb of the Cybermen.

B ~ Battlefield - 'Battlefield' a serial from the Sylvester McCoy era (season 26, 1989) - In response to a distress signal, the Seventh Doctor and Ace materialize the TARDIS near Lake Vortigern in England. The sound of explosions leads the TARDIS crew into the acquaintance of Brigadier Bambera of UNIT, in charge of a nuclear missile convoy. Following from the encounter, the retired Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart is informed of the Doctor's return, and a helicopter is sent to his country home to collect him, against the protests of his wife, Doris.

                - The Doctor mentions that they are several years in Ace's future. In this future, Britain has a King and a £5 coin is in common circulation.

                - It is implied that Merlin is, or will be, a future incarnation of the Doctor. It is also possible that Merlin is an alternate Doctor from the same parallel universe that Morgaine and the rest of the knights are from.

C ~ Celery - The 5th Doctor wore a stick of celery on the lapel of his coat. He explained in the 1984 story The Caves of Androzani that it was a protective measure. He was allergic to certain gases with the Praxis Range of the Spectrum. When the gases are present, the celery turns purple. Apparently the celery is a powerful restorative on Gallifrey and acts in a fashion similar to Smelling Salts. The Doctor tried using his celery to bring around his companion Peri but was only able to do so for a moment due to humans having an olfactory system was that was "comparatively feeble".

D ~ Demon - Demons have appeared in Doctor Who several times. Originally in Third Doctor serial 'The Dæmons', in which they were specifically aliens from the planet Dæmos who had come to Earth in the distant past and ingrained their existence as myth, with "demon" Azal summoned at the Master's will.

E ~ Eccleston, Christopher - Actor Christopher Eccleston became the 9th Doctor in 2005. He took over the role of the Doctor from Paul McGann (although the actual regeneration took place off-screen) and then handed over the role to David Tennant at the conclusion of the 2-part story Bad Wolf.

F ~ Frontios - The planet Frontios is mankind’s last colony, its inhabitants having fled a dying Earth. However, the planet itself holds hidden dangers.

The TARDIS is mysteriously affected by a meteorite storm and dragged down to the planet by gravity. The Doctor, Tegan and Turlough emerge, in the middle of the bombardment, to investigate. Despite his earlier reservations about getting involved, the Doctor violates the cardinal rule of the Time Lords by helping the colonists who were injured by the meteorite bombardment and by providing medical assistance.

H ~ Horror of Fang Rock - The cursed island of Fang Rock off the south coast of England is a place of rumour and tales of beasts from the sea. Three lighthouse men at the turn of the century face their fears when something comes in from the sea which brings death to all it touches.

On the way to show Brighton to Leela, the TARDIS lands on the island of Fang Rock off the south coast of England. Noticing that the lighthouse isn't functioning properly, the Fourth Doctor decides to investigate, as well as to ask for directions as the TARDIS seems to have gotten 'lost in the fog'. Upon arrival at the lighthouse, and after introducing themselves, the Doctor discovers the dead body of one of the keepers, Ben. The other two keepers, old superstitious Reuben and the keen young Vince Hawkins, report that a light fell from the sky near the island.

I~Invisible Lift: the slab of concrete sidewalk where the TARDIS landed in New Who episode Boom Town. The properties of the TARDIS' perception filter bonded to the slab when the rift was ripped open. Later, Jack, as a part of Torchwood, monopolises the use of the perception filter by turning that slab into a lift platform. It is refered to as both the "back door" and the "scenic route" into the Hub.

J ~ Judoon - The Judoon are a race of mercenary police featured in the episode "Smith and Jones" (2007). They are basically humanoid in form, have heads that look like that of a rhino, and wear black, bulky armour with heavy boots.

They serve the role of galactic police. Brutal in their application of the law, they are highly logical in their battle tactics. However they are not very intelligent and as a result can be tricked by a more intelligent individual. They have no jurisdiction on Earth and no authority to deal with human crime, so when a fugitive alien hid out in an Earth hospital they transported the building to the moon.
