That's really awesome! Thanks for that.

It's nice to know the second one's going to be an Atlantis one and that Torri Higginson is going to be reading it. Although obviously I wish David Hewlett would do it. But here's hoping for the future. LOL!

BTW, I especially like the extra info about exactly when the storylines take place. Even if the Atlantis one does give away a major spoiler for those like me who haven't started Season 4 yet.

Doctor Who dramas regenerate on we

Doctor Who is set to make a quantum leap forward as the company behind CD audio dramas based on the famous show launches a digital download service.

Big Finish Productions has been producing Doctor Who audio dramas on CD - featuring former Timelords including Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann - for the best part of a decade.

To keep in step with the times, the company has now launched a digital download service to reach an increasingly tech-savvy audience.

"There are several reasons we did this and one is that people are into downloads, it is the way things are going," said the Big Finish executive producer, Nick Briggs, the man behind the voice of the Daleks and Cybermen in the TV version of Doctor Who.

The new downloads service will also include audio dramas for sci-fi series Stargate SG-1 and Sapphire and Steel, for which Big Finish also has the rights.

    **snippage**

The dramas tend to be comprised of four 25-minute episodes, and around 13 double CDs are released a year priced at £14.99.

Big Finish's digital download service will offer the dramas at the cheaper price of £12.99 each or one episode for 99p.

    **snippage**

The company is initially targeting its existing customer database by providing the download service via its own website.

However, it is looking at options to make the audio dramas available over other digital distribution services.

This subscription thing, would it mean having to buy other CDs 'cause my interest is only in the Stargate stuff.

the subscription is just for a particular range / series. So if you subsribe to Stargate, it for the 1st 6 CD's (both SG1 & Atlantis) and nothing else.

You don't have to subcribe, you can by individual releases, but subscribing will save you a bit of money.

Hmm, wonder if they'll break it down for subs between SG1 and SGA .. I'm definitely interested in SGA but not sure about SG1 at the moment.

I hope that they will slowly but surely do all books. I would defintiely buy these just for the fact that the cast of both shows is actually doing the readings

I believe the 'subscription' will be to all 6 stories, and the advantage is a reduction in price. However, you don't have to subscribe, just buy the individual stories if you want, so just the 3 SG-1 or the 3 SGA. Or just one single one if that's all you want.

Just about to start work on the 2nd one now .

Do you know by chance whether there are plans to do more SG-1 audio books, post-Ark of Truth/Continuum?

A trailer will be available by the time they are ready to buy. It should give you a feel for the style.

    The Big Boss

It’s a new era for Big Finish, as the company joins the download revolution and offers its audio adventures for instant access from its site at http://www.bigfinish.com. It’s the latest milestone from a company that has been turning out quality, original, BBC licensed Doctor Who product for nearly a decade now, using actors from the TV show as well a host of other big name stars. It’s been an amazing success story, and the man who’s been overseen the company from the start, Jason Haigh-Ellery, spoke to SFX recently about the incredible audio journey.

    **snippage**

SFX: And Big Finish is obviously not just Doctor Who. You’re also doing original Sapphire and Steel stories and you’re just about to launch a range of Stargate audios.

"Stargate’s an interesting one. Not our first American licence. Dark Shadows was our first. That was an interesting for us, because it was our first time working in LA, our first time working with American actors, our first time dealing with an American organisation. And it was a good soft entry, actually, because it was a bit like Doctor Who. Dark Shadows hadn’t been made in Donkey’s years, far longer than Doctor Who actually. It keeps on getting revived; Johnny Depp’s bought the rights to do a version of it. It has a very similar fandom. We were able to launch over there and one in every four of all the people leaving the convention we launched at took a CD with them. They’ve been gagging for a second series which will be happening very soon.

"And then we went to MGM about Stargate. It took about a year to negotiate. We’re vey, very happy that we’re going to do something new. And something that is very well supported. The initial reaction has been very, very positive. We launch in April and we’re now able to launch on a download site.

"We are in negotiations over a couple of other properties. You’d probably be able to figure them out but I can't say. I can tell you who we’re not doing. We’re not doing Babylon 5. We tried. It just wasn’t possible. It’s a shame really, because it’s died off a bit now. Quite a lot, actually.

"And the big one, which I’d still like to do is James Bond. We pitched it. We wanted to do James Bond set in the ’50s and ’60s, doing the books verbatim, including the bits that aren’t as good as the other bits. The films' production company, Eon said - after they’d thought about it for six months - that it would impact on DVD sales. It was a great shame, because we had chosen our James Bond, even. Neil Roberts who is ridiculously good looking, but that doesn’t matter on audio. He has the right voice to be James Bond."
