‘Star Trek’ and the impact of sci-fi style

    By Peter Gutierrez

    Published: May 16 2009

The success of the new Star Trek film can in part be measured by the fact that no one leaves the cinema saying, “...Yes, yes – but did you see what were they wearing?” They’re too busy discussing the return of Leonard Nimoy in a cameo role as Spock and whether the new Scotty beams up better than the old one. As a result, they’re not so focused on the how the 1960s TV series has been lovingly updated by costume designer Michael Kaplan. Of course, that may be a conscious decision by the filmmakers.

Lately it has seemed that minimising the impact of fashion statements in science fiction has become a film industry goal. Who remembers the clothes in Stargate, for example? This is an interesting, if dismaying, development, since style has always mattered more in science fiction than in other genres. At times, for better or worse, it’s actually mattered more than anything else...

Mark Kennedy: secret policeman's sideline as corporate spy

"It also reveals something about Kennedy himself: with an apparent view to making money out of his access, the undercover officer used cryptic names derived from a science fiction television series, Stargate."
Documents seen by the Guardian suggest Kennedy put careful thought into what he would do after leaving the police. In February 2010 – a month before resigning – he set up Tokra Limited, at an address in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

The fanciful name could have derived from a science fiction television series, Stargate. Kennedy might well have seen parallels between his company's mission and the plot, which features the Tok'ra as an alien race symbiotically inhabiting human hosts. In their human guise, the Tok'ra fight a powerful, evil race who seek to control and destroy the planet.

I think they just needed a SciFi reference or maybe one of the writers always wanted a Stargate reference. But really, they could have brought it up in a more sensible way.
    I concur

Dan Shea was one of the prison guards in this week's Human Target episode, Cool Hand Guerrero. (Seen briefly towards the end of the episode.)

The FX show Archer mentioned Stargate yesterday

Malory: Effective immediately I'm promoting Cyril to field agent
Archer: Sounds great, best of luck...
Malory: Where do you think you're going?
Archer: Oh sorry, I’ve got to get back to Earth before the Stargate closes
    Malory: Get back in here!"
Archer: Mother, the chevrons are locking!

Not entirely accurate gate function, but a mention anyway.

The History Channel program Ancient Aliens has mentioned the shafts in the Great Pyramid were Stargates to the Constellation Orion and the Star Sirius because they are supposed to be aligned with them.
