Default Stargate but not Stargate: mentions in the press and pop culture

I figured we could start drowning in weird little articles getting their own thread, so why not start a ‘dumping ground’ thread for stuff like this? It’s for where all those ‘should I even mention it?’ type links could go.

The following are mentions of Stargate, but not necessarily about the show. But Stargate is now creeping into the press as CSI has done. Just excerpts, so click on links for full articles.

    Connect the dots
In a blending of fact and fantasy, lessons for a troubled age - Gallery Review
    By Tony Ozuna

    September 26th, 2007

The exhibition at ?*kolská 28 includes a mockumentary showing interviews with defense officials, Russian biophysicists and so on, along with a glass case containing various artifacts. Treister has drawn her conspiracy theories chart on two walls in the main room. At the center of the largest chart is the film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), creators of the military-occult film Stargate (1994) as well as The Wizard of Oz (1939).
According to some conspiracy theorists, MGM is linked to the occult group Ordo Templi Orientis and Aleister Crowley, as well as the U.S. military, since only after Stargate was released did the CIA decommission and partially declassify documents about its psychic espionage program, which was also called Stargate (conducted 1991–95).
And this is just a fraction of Brodsky’s chart. It also includes a link to Disney’s Fantasia, the Russian composer Mussorgsky, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Chernobog (the black god in Slavic myths), Freemasons, Pavlov’s research, the Illuminati, the Hexentanzplatz (a witches’ dance floor on a high peak in the Halz mountains of Germany), and on and on.

    Storage Visions Day 1 Coverage

As promised Storage Visions was pretty exciting. The show is much smaller than I expected though but well worth the cost of admission. Fusion-io is here showing their massive video demo that has every episode of Stargate showing at the same time in full DVD quality. A new company has caught my eye but I don’t think their system will be available for review since it currently starts out at 70,000 USD, that doesn’t mean I will not try though!

That's it. But techies might like the rest of the article.

One of those oddball bits of news:

    http://www.acorn-online.com/joomla15...ple&Itemid=767

    excerpt:

For Ridgefielder Liz Fulton, finding the perfect subject for her first short documentary came down to following around the guy with the flux capacitor.

Ms. Fulton, a producer with NBC’s Today show, and her colleague Bruce Stanbery, found artist Steve Heller at a car show where he paraded his bright yellow Cadillac with pink and lavender flames.

    ...........

Ms. Fulton appears as passionate about her documentary side-projects as Mr. Heller is about dinosaurs made out of 300 wrenches.

“You aren’t in it for profit,” she said of making films. “You get into something that intrigues you and follow it in all its tangential beauty. It’s compelling to you.”

She also notes jokingly that her next adventure may be to a parallel universe with the help of one of Mr. Heller’s new creations.

He’s building a Stargate,” Ms. Fulton said matter-of-factly. “It’ll be big enough for all of us to jump through to another dimension.”

Major props to LEGOsmith Michael Z., who spent a considerable chunk of his time crafting a replica of the Asgard flagship, Beliskner, as seen in Stargate SG-1. With all the LEGOs he used to build it, it's really got a shiny, rippling hull that's an awesome effect. He's even selling it for $3,500, though it's so big that you'd have to pick it up in Illinois.

Albertan to spread her message on U. S. street corners

    excerpt:

Patricia Stewart says she loves every single American -- and now she's got a plan to show them.

Stewart, who lives in Cold Lake, Alta., plans to stand on a street corner in Los Angeles today and in San Diego on Friday, draped in Canadian and American flags, holding a sign that reads, "Thank you, Americans, from this Canadian."

    ............

"The American people have gotten so much bad press lately that it's time they were made aware that they are still a good nation."

She also hopes to hand out copies of American Affirmations, a CD she produced with Cliff Simon, an actor best known as Ba'al from the Stargate science-fiction TV series.

Here's one I found a while ago about the comet 'Apophis'. A bit old, from 05, but won't be really cool till 2029.

    http://www.astronomy.com/asy/default.aspx?c=a&id=3434

However, mythology may not have been the only consideration in naming Apophis. Codiscoverers Dave Tholen and Roy Tucker are fans of the TV series Stargate SG-1. The show's most persistent villain is Apophis, an alien also named for the Egyptian god. "We considered a number of names, but 'Apophis' kept floating to the top," says Tucker. "Apophis was a very fitting name for 2004 MN4 not only because of its threatening nature, but also because of its evolution from an Aten asteroid to an Apollo asteroid during the 2029 encounter."

Whether inspired by mythology or science fiction, the name seems appropriate for an object that continues to change the way astronomers think about asteroids and planetary protection.

    Thieves steal priceless memento
    Feb 11 2009

    excerpt:

The burglar swiped a collection of sentimental "treasures" that belonged to
Mrs Wilson's daughter, Michelle "Shelley" Wilson, who died 21 years ago after a life-long battle with cystic fibrosis when she was 12-years-old.

"They were her special things. Little mementos of her," the angry mother
said. The most precious of the keepsakes was a bone carving the terminally ill
child was given by her nurse on the brink of meeting her idol, television's
MacGyver, in 1987 - thanks to the Make a Wish Foundation.

Shelley took "her little piece of New Zealand" with her to Vancouver where
she met MacGyver - Richard Dean Anderson - and escaped normal life.

The necklace was closely linked with that "very special time", Mrs Wilson
    said.

"She absolutely loved that carving. She wore it all the time."

Mercury? De Soto? Call It a Winner

    By RICHARD S. CHANG
    Published: February 20, 2009

    BOICEVILLE, N.Y.

IN a couple of months, when the last of the mountain snow melts away, Steve Heller, an industrial sculptor, furniture maker and winner of the second Collectible Car of the Year contest on nytimes.com, will begin work on his one big project of the year.

In the past, he has fabricated a 23-foot-high dinosaur out of tire chains and wrenches; made a rocket ship out of the barrel mixer of a cement truck, the side panels of an old Buick and treads from a bulldozer; built a soapbox derby car that resembles a Top Fuel dragster and spits fire; and customized a 1959 Cadillac hot rod with double-layeredfenders and painted-on flames, which pulls a smile out of Mr. Heller’s bearded face when he mentions it.

“Cadillac guys don’t like flames,” he said.

... His contest winnings include $5,000. How will he spend it? “Buying the ‘Stargate Atlantis’ action figures,” he said, adding that he intends to build a small Jumper spacecraft like those on the show. He also plans to buy more car parts. For what? “I’m not sure yet — probably more rocket ships and cars.”

Stargate was mentioned briefly in the CBS comedy series BIG BANG THEORY (episode "The Cushion Saturation" tonight). No episode title was mentioned, but there was a description, which alas I forgot, but Sheldon obviously watches all things scifi

SG1 - Big Bang Theory: The Cushion Saturation:

On the March 2 '09 episode of Big Bang Theory, 'The Cushion Saturation,' Sheldon references a Stargate SG-1 episode.

This video clip is embedded on my google blog

Sheldon and his friends are playing a game of paintball war. They're in a shed, and Sheldon turns to his friends and says...

"What we need now is a tactical retreat. Did you see the episode on Stargate where they found themselves on a planet with a culture based loosely on Earth Athens and Sparta? (Blank stares from teammates.) Not important..."

The only thing remotely close might be the clothing the characters wore in "Brief Candle," but maybe the BBT writers didn't expect SG fans to pick it apart

Yeah I'm gunna have to agree. O'Neill aging rapidly and the 100 day society living longer doesn't relate to the situation the Big Bang Theory presented.
I think they just needed a SciFi reference or maybe one of the writers always wanted a Stargate reference. But really, they could have brought it up in a more sensible way.
O'Neill: "Ah. Trees, trees and more trees! What a wonderfully green universe we live in, eh."
