"Americans are considered crazy anywhere in the world.
They will usually concede a basis for the accusation but point to California as the focus of the infection. Californians stoutly maintain that their bad reputation is derived solely from the acts of the inhabitants of Los Angeles County. Angelenos will, when pressed, admit the charge but explain hastily, 'It's Hollywood. It's not our fault, we didn't ask for it; Hollywood just grew.'
The people in Hollywood don't care; they glory in it. If you are interested, they will drive you up Laurel Canyon 'where we keep the violent cases.' The Canyonites — the brown-legged women, the trunks-clad men constantly busy building and rebuilding their slap-happy unfinished houses — regard with faint contempt the dull creatures who live down in the flats, and treasure in their hearts the secret knowledge that they, and only they, know how to live."
--And He Built A Crooked House, Robert A. Heinlein
We did one at about the same time this thread started. Here.
You can always nominate animated shows for these tourneys though.![]()

Raduzhok (and anyone else who's cable or satellite is having a dispute with FOX or other stations)
In Missouri, they just announced the MO Attorney General is looking into filing a suit against Dish Network for deceptive practices/advertising. They've got a huge (as in half a bldg tall) sign on the Scotttrade Center (where hockey is played) advertising themselves as the official sponsor of the St Louis Blues and advertising DISH as the place to watch the games. However, with this current dispute you haven't been able to watch the games on Dish in almost a month. The MO AG has given notice to DISH and is giving them till Nov 3 to respond.

Hill Street Blues ftw, tbh!
"It is said that the future is always born in pain. The history of war is the history of pain. If we are wise, what is born of that pain matures into the promise of a better world, because we learn that we can no longer afford the mistakes of the past."
I guess I should count this up. Had completely forgotten about it. The Rangers game is making me.....

Thanks all for participating!
I'll see if I can get the opening posts for the next one up by tomorrow or Friday.
about the next tourney
if we are doing the 70's then I was wondering if we could get may be 12 nominations (double the years, double the nominations). Or at the very least 10 (1 per year).
. . .
I'll start with 10 and go from there. Make y'all suck it up and pick your absolute favorites.![]()
I'll see how many people actually carry over from this tourney first. If we keep the same number of people that would be 100 shows, but some might drop so we'll see. I don't want a huge tourney to have to get through...at this point anyway.![]()
IMO always implied.
Yes.
I'll try to get it up in an hour or so.
And yes, I don't like fooling with 2nds since there are only a few of us.
IMO always implied.
Favorite TV Show Tourney (1970-1979)
Welcome back to the regulars, and welcome to any new players that want to join in the fun. Thanks go to Joe (teal'c2006) for getting this thread started and running the first two tournaments.
RULES:
STEP 1: Nomination Round
- Each player gets TEN votes to nominate a show for the tourney. Show is automatically in. There will be no need to get someone else to second your nomination.
- To qualify for the tournament, the first episode of the show had to originally air between January 1, 1970 and December 31, 1979.
- Animated shows/cartoons, game shows, talk shows, mini series, etc are welcome.
- Feel free to suggest as many shows as you want and then
beg, bribeask others to vote for them.Clearly mark your actual votes though.
- The Nomination Round kicks off when this post is posted. I'll give it a week or so, and we'll get started.
- There might be a bonus round. We'll see how the initial nominating goes first.
Places to look for shows:
epguides.com <---this is a good one so thanks to TS.
TV.com
Retro Junk
list of US network tv schedules
list of years in tv on wiki
imdb
If you find other good places to look, post them please and I'll add them.
STEP 2: Elimination Rounds
- Begins after the Nomination Round is complete.
- Tourney is played survivor style. Shows are eliminated each round till we have a final winner.
- Vote for your least favorite shows from the "What's Left" list each round.
- Please list your votes in alphabetical order.
- You only vote once per round.
- No tie breakers until we get down to 25 shows remaining.
- I'm going to continue with three counts a week. I'll count up the votes on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thrusdays...hopefully by noon my time which is CST US time and GMT -6:00 for the folks in the UK. Possibly sooner if I see all the regulars have voted, but I'll be counting on those days regardless of whether everyone has voted or not.
So get nominating! The next post will be updated with what's in.
And of course if anyone has suggestions or questions about the tourney, speak up.![]()
