Obviously the folks who wrote the article don't watch Stargate(s) (they cite other scifi examples):

    Army Developing Paralysis Beam

The U.S. Army is working on a modified 7.5-million-candlepower strobe light in hopes of creating a paralysis beam.

Although details are sketchy, it appears that U.S. government acquisition records call for contractor Peak Systems to ... "...design and fabricate a light-based immobilisation system/deterrent device and integrate it with an unmanned aerial system. This will include any necessary medical research on frequency and amplitude modulation of high-intensity light that will cause immobilisation to all those within the beam."

Ah, tax dollars hard at work.

Y'know, I love tech as much as the next nerd, but it's sad when the military is the cutting edge. Yes, it often is, but still, there are more pressing applications for technology. That said, if they pull this off, that'd be pretty interesting. ;D

Isn't there a law or something that gives the US military and government rights over anything that has a potential military application? Just look at some of the stuff the DSO is researching. http://www.darpa.mil/dso/programs.htm

Who cares? The military gets lots of funding (especially in the current administration) and they have alot of good people working on stuff that will likely come into use for the general community at some point.

I mean, the internet was invented as a way for missile silos to stay in contact with all of the rest if one or more of them were destroyed. The military isn't all just killing people.
