Is Atlantis Really Worth It?????

I was thinking this cos so far earth has spent countless millions funding the expedition, countless people have died, they awoke the wraith and now the asurans and what profit have they made???? A handfull of puddle-jumpers and a city they can't run due to the enormous power requirments


Why keep going??

The SGC had to keep going cos the goauld were right there on the doorstep but they can just close the door on the wraith.......why bother????

There are two main reasons that immediately popped into my mind..

1. Never stop exploring.. Who knows? The Ancients might have the key to all diseases in their database somewhere for all we know. The scientific gain this expedition can (and will) bring to the human race is astronomical.

2. Now that they have awoken the Wraith, they bear a certain responsibility to protect the people of the Pegasus Galaxy especially because they are by far the most advanced race and the only ones that stand a remote chance against the Wraith and the Asurans.
You don't just run away from responsibilities...

I'm sure I can give you more reasons once I've thought about it..

The Wraith are also trying to reach Earth, and given the circumstances, it might not take long before they actually make it here.

Cos its a beast. If they can get it to fly they can solve all the PG problems, all milky way problems and probably a lot of the Asgard's as well. If they can get the ZPMs that is...

Just on the second point the ancients did a fine job of not just running from responsibility but literally fleeing from it! If we are meant to be the second evolution of them then surely there's nothing wrong with starting the running early lol.

But the wealth of knowledge atlantis may potentially have is invaluable!

Simple! We messed things up in the Pegasus Galaxy. The Wraith are fully awake because of us, and now know of Earth, and will do anything to reach it. We must now fight to clean up the mess we have made.

Why? We make messes all the time and we don't always "clean up" after ourselves......just leave Atlantis, and make sure it's blown before we go.

With Atlantians I meant us (because we occupy Atlantis atm, otherwise I would have said Ancients).. I don't think that the Olesians are more advanced than us., but that takes this thread a little OT

I think the point being made is that while yes, now we have no choice but to keep fighting to keep earth safe, was it worth it in the first place? Very little useable tech has been discovered compared to the number of dangers we have been exposed to.

The fact is that they can't just blow it and leave.

As was said at the end of Atlantis S1 they can't blow it in to small enough pieces. Dr Z. said though that the Wraith would be able to backwards engineer it and reach Earth anyway!!!

Well, The Wraith already know where Earth is, they just dont have the means to get there...........anymore(No Mans Land). If Atlantis was abandoned and submerged again, I think that it would only be a matter of time before the Wraith find it (they're all awake at the same time now remember!).
So if they find the city, then they'd power it up using their mint wraith tech and download the plans from the ancient database for the hyperdrive, and wham! Fly to Earth and have an all-you-can-eat buffet!

There are many reasons to keep going. Basically, to me, it is the most advanced city that they have stumbled across and are fortunate enough to call it theirs. It still has plenty of mysteries and no one really knows what they may find.

Also, I think the wraith pose a threat now, and destorying Atlantis and/or closing up shop is not going to stop that threat now.

But if they destroy the atlantis gate/take it with them.... the wraith will have no other way of getting across.
