Vala Mal Doran, Valar, and Tolkeinn

Vala is the singular form of Valar, the gods of Middle Earth...

anyone think there's a link here?
Colonel Jack O'Neill: So what's your impression of Alar?
Teal'c: That he is concealing something.
    Colonel Jack O'Neill: Like what?
Teal'c: I am unsure. He is concealing it.

Well, Vala isn't a god and Stargate doesn't take place in Middle-Earth. So I would have to say that any connection between her and the Valar is very unlikely.
*And that's all I have to say about that*

No. Vala Mal Doran is your typical consonant-vowel-R/L-vowel-N sci-fi type name. Nothing special about it at all.

If it was her former Qua'ulds name then it could fly.

ja, nk, but it would be cool if there were a reason linked to middle earth...

can anyone come up with a good one?

Some time ago I joked about the Maiar being the Ancients, the elves being Asgard, the hobbits being Nox and the Dwarves being Furlings.

Not quite... The Asgard are the hobbits(both short), and the Nox are the elves(Elves and Nox both live around trees)
Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth or easy...

... or that any man can measure the tides and hurricanes he will
                      encounter on the strange journey.

                      Spoiler:

                      2 Cor. 10:3-5
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; )
                      5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

The Asgard weren't always short. They used to be much taller.

Also, the Asgard as we know them would make terrible hobbits - they haven't the physical ability to stand up to the things a hobbit can.

Well, the Hobbits also believe they were once taller and that they shrank over the course of many generations.
*And that's all I have to say about that*
