    [En route to David's House]

"Yeah, I guess it was a little strange." Kylie admitted with a hopeful smile. Although, she hadn't been entirely sure how to interpret Devin's comment. Did he mean that her impersonation had been terrible? Did he not like the playfulness behind it? Had the time for teasing finally come to an end? Or had he simply meant that her natural voice was so pretty that he didn't want her spoiling it?

The linguist became even more confussed when Devin's next comment was filled with self-centered pride. Instead of responding, however, Kylie simply matched Devin's level of silence, choosing to enjoy the peaceful night air. She marvelled at how strong Devin's arms felt as he carried her, and yet, how comfortable the journey to David's house felt.

Finally, as they neared the front door, Kylie broke the silence with a large yawn. "I wish I wasn't so tired." She admitted quietly, and followed up with another yawn. She had been holding her crutches like a shield across her chest, but now she angled them slight toward the ground. "You can put me down now. It'll be easier to unlock the door that way." Kylie told Devin with a small grin.

"But what if I don't want to set you down." Devin pouted, again jokingly. "I mean, wouldn't it be more fun if I just carried you everywhere? ... Or not, seeing as you might lose muscle mass and stuff like that." Devin looked up at Kylie now that she was at full height and stuck his tongue out at her. "After you m'dear." Devin bowed and indicated the opened door.

"Besides it's not exactly practical." Kylie said with a shrug and a shy smile. Hobbling into the house in front of Devin, she made her way over to the grand staircase. "If we're going straight to bed, then it looks like I might need your help again." She admitted with a small giggle.

"Now I like the way you're thinkin'." Devin wrapped his arms around Kylie in a big hug. After they'd separated from the embrace, Devin lifted Kylie off her feet again and carried her upstairs to the room they were using. On the way up, Devin asked her, "Kylie? ... Oh sorry, never mind, I forgot what I was going to ask you."

Kylie grinned like a teenager when Devin suddenly gave her a huge bear hug, swept her off her feet, and carried her up the stairs. She barely even noticed the fact that her crutches now lay in a heap at the bottom of the staircase. She wouldn't them tonight anyway. She gave Devin an intrigued look when he admitted forgetting what he had wanted to say to her. I thought that the Tok'ra weren't allowed to forget anything." She teased him lightly, the grin still plastered on her face.

"And by the way, when I mentioned going to bed, I really did mean going to sleep. I'm exhausted." She added belatedly with a small giggle as they reached the top of the stairs.

"Boo, you're no fun, you're making me work for this, aren't you?" Devin asked teasingly, the latest volley in this little game the couple played. Once inside their room, Devin set Kylie down onto the bed and promptly bounced onto the bed next to her. After giving Kylie a long kiss, Devin settled himself into a more comfortable spot. "Really though, must we play such elaborate games?" Devin asked, even though this was just another event in that game. "So, what say you?"

    ((It's late. I'm tired. *Yawn.*))

Kylie sighed with contentment as Devin set her down on the bed, grinning as she waited for him to make the first move. She didn't have to wait long before the kiss came, a nice, long, lingering kiss that she enjoyed far too much. Unfortunately, the kiss ended much too soon, but it did allow both Devin and herself to adjust into more comfortable positions. Kylie took Devin's hand in hers as he asked the inevitable question that she had been waiting to hear. Games were a lot of fun, but eventually they had to come to an end, so the real fun could begin. "I say....this has been the best birthday ever." She whispered quietly into Devin's ear. "And there's only one more thing that can make it perfect." Kylie said slowly and carefully so that the meaning wouldn't be lost. Finally, the linguist's smile broke into a rain of laughter as she leaned in closer to Devin to kiss him once more.

    [David's House]

Kylie shifted in her sleep as she was transported into a dream like none that she had ever had before. Like many of her dreams of late, Kylie opened her eyes to a world long past. She was beaten, alone, cold, scared, lost somewhere between reality and fantasy. She was holding a mirror, glaring at it as if her life depended on it. Kylie heard herself repeating a long lost promise. "I swear that if I ever have children, they'll always know what love is. I'll never, ever, ever let anything like this happen to my kids. Never. That's a promise." A single tear rolled down young Kylie's face, she scrambled to hide the mirror as loud footsteps pounded in the distance, headed right for her. Kylie felt the presence of a large man behind her, and before she could look at the image, a sharp sting resonated across her cheek, her punishment for having the mirror in her possession. The scene faded away, but was quickly replaced by another one.

The room in which she now found herself was beautiful. There was pink, yellow, and green wallpaper on the walls covered in flowers, rainbows, and unicorns. There was a baby crib in one corner, a soft pink blanket and several stuffed animals resting inside. And next to the crib was a rocking chair. Soft instrumental music played from a radio across the room. The lullaby was one that Kylie had heard many times before. And now she found herself sitting in the rocking chair, swaying forward and back in time with the harp chords playing in the background. In her arms was a tiny newborn baby girl. The baby couldn't have been more than three weeks old. She was singing to the baby, and yet Kylie didn't recognize the words coming out of her mouth. The scence was wonderful, and peaceful, almost perfect. Again, the scene faded away as quickly as it had begun.

The next part of Kylie's dream was not so glorious as the last. She was sitting in a tangled heap on a cold, hard floor. The room was dark, it felt small, musty, and smelled of dead rats and mold. Kylie was crying, and mumbling to herself, her face buried in her hands, an old ragged piece of forgotten cloth on the floor in front of her. Slowly, a shaft of light from seemingly nowhere pierced through the darkness, and Kylie could see for the first time a broken, splittered crib, covered by a tattered pink blanket. This nursery was a stark contrast to the one she had seen before, but it was unmistakably the same room. The scene faded and Kylie found that her dream had brought her full circle.

Once more, the linguist was staring at herself in a mirror. But this time the youthful Kylie was replaced by one much older. Her skin was wrinkled, and scarred, bags had formed under her eyes. This time, instead of making promises about the future, she was reflecting on the past and hating herself for breaking the old promises. "I'm a failure. I broke the one promise I ever made to myself. I couldn't take care of my children any more than I was taken care of a child. And now I'll never have the chance to redeem myself." Kylie could feel that her internal organs were slowly giving out on her, she knew that any time she had left would be very short. This time, the scene faded much slower than the previous ones.

Kylie was left with one conclusion, she was doomed to become a failure if she ever attempted to keep her childhood promise. If the impossible happened, and she actually had children, she was doomed to let them down. They would be killed or kidnapped. Her job was too dangerous for that not to happen. She would spend the rest of her days trying to search for her children, to do them justice, but in the end she would remain a failure.

Back in the upstairs guest room at David's house, years after the childhood promise was made, and years before it would even be possible to think about fullfilling the promise, Kylie stirred once more in her sleep. She fought to pull herself out of what was quickly becoming a nightmare. Silent tears were already sliding down the sides of her face and soaking the pillow underneath her head.

Dean Holmes' residence -> Sheriff's office

It was exactly 9 am when Betsy Holmes woke up. Sleep ? I fell asleep ? When did that happen ?
The blackbird beside their window was in full song, and Betsy groaned and pulled the covers over her head. Want him to stop... Why can't he stop ? "Dean, tell that bird to stop, wlll you.". But of course there was no answer.
"Dean? Dean!" At the last uttered word, the covers were thrown up and Betsy sat bolt upright, looking around panicked at first.
"Oh... yeah..." She muttered then, remembering what had happened yesterday. Everything flooded back into her memory, as she started to get washed and dressed.

Betsy didn't bother with breakfast. Had Dean been there, he'd have been angry about that, but right now, Betsy was in no mood for food. Her feet automatically carried her towards the Sheriff's office. Mike would know what to do now. Mike would. He HAD to know.

The night before, after everything that had happened, she had been debating whether or not to call on Mike to find out exactly what was going on, but had decided against it in the end. After all, there was nothing that could be done right at that moment, wasn't there ? Common sense dictated that she waited until morning.

And now it was morning, and now Betsy found herself at the front door of the Sheriff's office.

Ringing the bell, she was surprised to see Mike opening the door. Well, he would... normally this is Dean's shift... Oh...

    "Betsy! Hi."

"Hi Mike. Sorry to bother you, can I come in ?"

"Yeah sure, I was going to call on you today, but you're here now, so come on in."

    "Thanks, Mike."

"No problem, Betsy, have a seat."

Betsy did as she was told, finding the only chair available was the one in front of Mike's desk. The other ones were all piled up with stuff like Mike's jacket, and papers and the like. It was decidedly messy here, Betsy saw.

Knowing she hadn't eaten yet, he poured her a cup of coffee after sitting her down. She didn't say a word, which made him frown a little. Normally she would have immediately launched into her story.

    "Betsy ?"

Betsy held her hands around the cup as if it were a lifeline. She hadn't realised how frail her nerves were, right until now. She looked up at him, eyes full of tears she hadn't allowed to flow since last night.

    "I ... I ... I...".

"It's ok. Take a deep breath. Sip your coffee.".

She did as instructed and found it easier to talk now. "Yeah. I... I'd... What's happened ?! I only know he's gone, was going to find you last night but you were busy and it was getting dark and raining so bad, and..."

Mike listened to her ramble, feeling guilty for not having told her right that instant when it had happened. But then again, there'd been so much happening at that time that he had simply forgotten about her until it was too late. But now though, he could make amends, and he did so.

"He fell down. He was chasing the shooter into the old tower, the one we used to use for storage and stuff ? Well, the shooter hit the trapdoor on him, causing him to fall down the ladder. Dean's going to be fine. He's got cracked or broken ribs from the fall, probably a concussion too, but I'm not sure. We sent him to the base for treatment."

"The base?! But we have a clinic! Oh....". Betsy wailed, uncomprehending.

"Winchester left for Riverton. There's no one on duty there, right now. That's why I sent him to the base. The supply truck was going back anyway, so it wasn't a waste of fuel, either, for them.".

"The base...". Betsy started to cry fully now, realising she may not see her husband for quite some time now. Maybe they'll keep him there, no telling what those soldiers will do to him... God...

"Hey now. It's ok. They'll take good care of him, I promise.". He offered her the box of kleenexes and watched as she blew her nose with one of the small 'paper' cloths.

"That's what you say... I wanna see him...." She wailed and cried, causing Mike to stand up and pace and sigh and scratch his head.

What was he to do ? He had meant to call on Blue anyway to figure out the next steps re the shooter. Still, he was sure the Garrison had things well under control in that department, but he did want to know the status of his deputy, as well.

"Tell you what. I'll call Mykonos. She'll know what's happened and will tell us. Maybe you'll even get to speak to Dean. Is that okay?"

"Oh Mike!" With Betsy's suddenly hopeful face, he knew he had made the right decision.

Mike stood up and went to the radio/phone that was connected to the base, directly to Blue's offices.

After making a connection, he spoke into the handset.

"Sergeant Mykonos ? This is Sheriff Anderson. I'd like to know about the status of my deputy that got shipped to your base last night. Is he okay ?"

"Yes, I'll hold," Mike sighed, wondering how long it would take. Then he waited a few minutes, listening to the music on the other line as he was put 'on hold'.
And then suddenly, a booming voice erupted through the phone, causing Mike to wince.

"Good morning Mike! Dr Aaronson here. I heard you wanted an update on Dean?"

"Yes, please, doctor Aaronson." He mouthed 'that's the CMO!' to Betsy who, after a few seconds of working out the letters, nodded back that she understood.
"And good morning to you as well. How is my deputy ? I've got a worried wife here that would like to speak to your patient if at all possible.". He smiled at Betsy who smiled back.

"Hmmm. This is odd." Devin said, going over the latest case he'd gotten. Somehow, he'd have to track down a pregnant male mobster, find a way to deliver the baby without getting himself or the mobster killed. Great. Then again, he was a Problem Sleuth, one of the best in the city at that, if there was a way to pull all this off, he'd figure it out, one way or the other...
    <Discontinuity>

Gunfire, tire squealing, and lots of it. Devin and the preg-mobster were being chased by a group of Prohibition-era mobsters. He presumed these guys were rival mobsters, but that didn't really did matter, only the job did. Making a sharp a turn as he dared with the preg-mobster in the back, Devin's aging car...
    <Discontinuity>

The job was done and he'd been paid. But something about it he couldn't quite shake, it was strange really, the whole case had been too easy. Whatever though, he'd done his job, gotten paid, and that's what mattered.
    <End Dream>

In reality, the height-challenged Doctor snuggled up closer to Kylie, his instincts keeping his frame close to the source of warmth.

Kylie woke up much later than she normally would have if she had been on the base. Her first thought was of the troubling dream she had the night before, but those thoughts quickly vanished as she the felt the warmth of Devin next to her. Amazingly, the man was still asleep. Kissing him lightly on the cheek, Kylie slipped out of the bed as best and as quietly as she could. Her crutches had fallen into a heap on the floor at some point during the evening, and Kylie just managed to reach them.

The linguist hummed to herself as she pulled on a comfortable, light-weight sweater. The mint green color had always managed to bring out the color in her eyes, or so she had been told once. She barely managed to slip into the accompanying pants without falling, but was at last successful in her efforts to get ready without having to wake Devin.

Kylie briefly considered attempting to make her downstairs, but in the end decided that it would be safer to wait for Devin to wake up. Instead, she grabbed her journal out of the dresser drawer she had placed in the previous afternoon, and made her way down the hall to find a comfortable spot in which to write.

She finally decided that the room across the hall from the one she was sharing with Devin provided the most inspiration for her writing. There were several paintings hanging on the walls and a large bookshelf spanned the entire length of one end of the room. The other side of the room, however contained a small desk with matching chair. The scratches on the desk, and the pile of books at one corner of the surface made it appear as if David had often used this same room for his most creative writing.

Settling into the desk, Kylie opened her journal to the first empty page and began writing out her thoughts from the previous day, including her impressions of Foreston, and what she hoped to accomplish in the short amount of leave time she had available.

Get up, or stay in bed. Urf, why does it have to be day time so freakin' early? Boo to the sun. Okay, roll straight out of bed. Ow. Bad idea... Or not seeing as I'm now more awake. Yay for being more awake. Devin groaned, "Does it have to be morning already? Kylie, tell the sun to go away, I want to sleep a few more hours." I wish caffeine still worked on me.

Hearing a loud thump coming from inside the bedroom, Kylie closed her journal and hobbled quickly across the hall to find out what was happening. The sight that greeted her instantly brought a smile to her face and a musical laugh out of her mouth. "Devin, I didn't know you were prone to falling out of bed." She said, still laughing.

"And I happen to enjoy the sunlight. Besides, it's not even that early." She continued playfully as she made her way over to Devin's side. "I'd offer you a hand up, but then we'd both end up on the floor." She said with a sparkle in her eye.

Making her way over to the dresser, Kylie placed her journal back into the top drawer, and turned around again to face Devin. "I'll tell you what, carry me downstairs and I'll make you some pancakes for breakfast."

"Is that such a bad thing?" Devin asked. Don't open your eyes, the sun will burn them out. "Both falling out of bed and you on the ground?" Okay, my eyesight's worth Kylie, open eyes. Hauling himself up, Devin plodded over to a fresh set of clothes and put them on. "Now," Devin turned around dramatically, that look in his eyes. "To breakfast."

"Me on the ground is definately a bad thing. Falling out of bed...well, I guess some people might enjoy the activity. Although, I can't say that it's something I praticularly like. But, you know, if it's your thing, then go for it." Kylie told Devin as she waited for him to force himself to wake up the rest of the way. Personally, she had always been a morning person, but she understood the need for Devin to take a little more time waking up. Of course, being a morning person had its downsides too. She could never get enough sleep. It didn't matter if she went to sleep at ten, or was up until three in the morning working on a project, her internal clock never failed to wake her up early the next day. Her body had been trained early on to not sleep in for fear of being punished. Breakfast at 6:30 in the morning and dinner at 7:00 that night or a beating at 6:45 in the morning and another at 7:15 that night. School at 8:00 in the morning, and bed at 10:30 that night no matter what.. The mantra entered her concious awarness from a part of her mind she had fought for so long to keep closed.

Blinking away the momentary distraction, Kylie returned Devin's look with one of her own, and soon her look turned into a giggle. "To breakfast, my handsome and charming sweet tooth."

"Agreed Dearest, to the breakfast table, in the hopes that our gracious host has the supplies to make a decent breakfast." With careful deliberation, Devin picked up Kylie and began the slow conveyance to the stairs. "Now what's on the agenda today? I'm open to any reasonable suggestion, especially anything that's your idea." I'm lucky, so very very lucky. I love you.
