Nudity in Children of the Gods

I recently saw the DVD edition of "Children of the Gods", and was shocked and amazed to see full frontal nudity in it (Sha're is fully exposed when Apophis is choosing her to be his bride).

Now, I'm not some reactionary conservative type; I've nothing particuarly against nudity (and face it, Sha're did look good), but I just don't get the point of it. As far as I'm aware no other episode has got anything above a 12 rating. SG-1 always seemed to be a relatively family-friendly show to me.

Why, then, the nudity in the pilot episode? It just seemed so out of place. Was SG-1 originally planned to be a soft porn series, and the writers changed their minds at the last minute? Or was it some cunning way to get teenage boys hooked on the show?

I'd be interested to know the reasons behind this...

Being a made for TV movie, I'm sure the producers wanted some cheesecake just to keep some of the 17-26ers interested for episode 2.

Maybe the Show PTB wanted to show just how much Apophis enjoyed humiliating his victims ,even when choosing a Host for his Queen ?

Whatever their reasons,my copy of the video doesn't include the full-frontal .
I only found out about this scene when I Posted in the episode Thread !
The place to "Gate" to during Outages for updates and info:

I think the scene was a "sex sells" sort of scenario, get people hooked with eye-candy and good story line. Although the producers (thankfully) have tended to keep away from the eye-candy ideas that Star Trek seems to envision nowadays.

I also think it showed (like Bagpuss said) how Apophis would humiliate his victims, after all Share did seem quite scared in the scene I believe.

Yeah, sex sells. Look how good the show did!

And what a girl to pick!

Sick? Yes. Lonely? Very. But a sick, lonely person? No.

Yeah ! I really think this nude scene is completely useless in the storyline ...
I have no problem with nudity,
but I don't really understand what is the scenaristic function of this nude sequence ...
Of course I understand the "audience attracitve function" but ...

And you know, before Apophis demands to see Sha're, there's this female US soldier (captured in the beginning of the pilot) ... Teal'c brings her before Apophis. Then the Female Soldier is nude, but we don't see anything "hot" ... and the scene is quite good. I think they could have done the same thing with Sha're => show the scene without any "real nude" image ... IMO the scene would be the same or even better without those "real nude" images ...

Just a question : was the scene censored in 1997 or later on US TV ?

The nudity was because Stargate: SG-1 originally aired on Showtime and they did it because they could. Some of TPTB have said later that they regretted it and yes, it was edited out when it was shown in syndication.

Personally it made no difference to mewhen watching the DVD (I have never seen the uncut version). I agree that it highlighted through that moment the cruelty and the total lack of regard for hosts which set the tone for the rest of the series but I don't think, apart from that, there is any "message" behind the nudity. It is just making a very strong point.

Personally, I have no problem with this in a episode but I can understand for some it may be. I know that the first airing of the ep was not censored but after this it was. The DVD is the only way to see this full scene now! The reason, who knows!

Probably because (in the US at least) it would violate FCC regulations, big time. Must I remind US people about the whole Janet Jackson Superbowl halftime scandal?

After seven full seasons, and now into season eight, people think of Stargate SG-1 as a mainstream show, as well they should. I think you have to consider the fact that the pilot was the first episode, and on a pay-network. We've grown acoustom to things on SG-1 now after 150 episodes that probably no one considered back then. Anybody that has caught episodes of The Sopranos, or any other original series for HBO, Showtime, ext just has to expect things you don't see otherwise. The pilot is what it is, and there probably should be an edited version available on that first season dvd set with a warning about what is in the un-cut version.
Carter: Navigation? O'Neill: Check. Carter: Oxygen, Pressure, Temperature Control?
O'Neill: Check. Carter: Internal Dampeners? O'Neill: Cool!, and Check. Carter: Engine?
O'Neill: All Check. O'Neill: Phasers? Carter: Sorry Sir.

Well I guess I'm the minority here, but after seeing the unedited pilot I was expecting more of the same for Hathor(113). Cheers to disappointment

All I can say is that it's Showtime. For the longest while, all of the premium channel's original shows were in the habit of throwing in a bit of skin. Tales from the Crypt, Dream On, Sex and the City, etc.... Sure, it falls on the tactless side but generally appeals to the single, 18-35 year old male demographic, which is traditionally the group with the most expendable income.

I too expected to see more in Hathor episodes since after all she was the goddess of sex. Strange producers!
