2nd console

ok, i am a huge trek fan in my own right but there has always been on thing i was unsure of. What is the second console for?

i know in the origina lsereis it was security but in the later series security was moved back but the console remained in the same space. Waht is it?

on Enterprise D (TNG) the console that was next to Ops (where Data always sat) was the Conn - (the driver's seat)
