Default SG-1 Longer than Dr Who

I just found this out. I had always thought because Dr. Who had 27 seasons that they had several hundred eps, but they have less then stargate. 173 I think.
So technically, while Dr. Who has 27 seasons and counting, the first 26 seasons averaged like 5-10 eps.
Dr. Who is the longest running, but Stargate has the most episodes for a sci-fi series in the world!

I guess you could just say Dr Who is the longest running franchise, and Stargate SG-1 is the longest running series

You have to remember, though, on Doctor Who an 'episode' ranges between 2 and 12 segments about 25 minutes each. Over 26 years the average length of an 'episode' is probably 4 1/2 to 5 parts in length. (Not counting the new series.)

I think Doctor Who had somewhere over 700 25 minute episodes in all, which is around 350 Stargate-length episodes.

Stargate has more stories, but in sheer length Doctor Who still wins out.

No matter what, both shows obviously have what it takes to go the distance. I say who cares which one has more eps or whatever? Just enjoy them.

Yep, though I gotta say its good having the longest running sci fi come from here in the UK

    Just to clear it up:

Doctor Who (old) ran for 26 Seasons with an average of 7 serials a season
Each serial lasted on average 8 parts, each lasting either 30 or 45 minutes

The longest franchise in Star Trek lasting 28 seasons, 10 movies and it will likey have another spin off in the next few years
Equality is not a concept. It's not something we should be striving for. It's a necessity. Equality is like gravity. We need it to stand on this earth as men and women. And the misogyny that is in every culture is not a true part of the human condition. It is life out of balance, and that imbalance is sucking something out of the soul of every man and woman who is confronted with it.

I've heard that as well, and rumors are flying down here in OZ that it could be filmed here. Last I heard the script was getting a re-write.

I have never watched Dr Who and don't plan to so I didn't know that about the way episodes/serials are done.

I'm just glad Stargate has gone past the X Files.

Doctor Who was pretty unique, in that it was a serial of discrete story blocks. Altogether the original series ran 26 seasons with 159 stories, comprised of 701 separate episodes.

A story went anywhere from 1 to 14 episodes, but typically they were 4, 6, or 7 episode stories of 25-minute length. (Although a few 45-minute episodes were made.)

And a whole story sometimes led into the next, giving it the feel of an aggregate serial.

So far, the new Doctor Who series has 13 45-minute 1 and 2 episode stories.

I've never seen or heard of the show, but according to this:http://www.epguides.com/DoctorWho/, it did indeed have 158 episodes. But they were all broken up into many different 25-45 minute long parts.

So in a way, it had 700 episodes. Just many tied together with the others.

It shouldn't be about how long these shows run for: but whether they continue to make good quality enjoyable episodes
