    Best Star Trek Theme Music

Just pick your favorite, like in my other one about Star Wars music. Except I'm not going to list them all because there's way too many. Each movie has multiple themes, each series has multiple themes, there are even episode-specific themes. So just be specific when you say which music you like.

Some of my favorites would be the First Contact main theme, the ST: Generations theme (end title), DS9 main theme, and the Mountain theme from ST: Final Frontier.

    Enterprise!

Naw, just kidding. I didn't hate Enterprise like some rabid fans do, but my favorite is probably Voyager. I loved the theme song and the visuals.

Voyager probably has the best series theme, although Deep Space 9 had a pretty good theme to it as well, while TNG, TOS are both a bit too campy (especially the latter), and Enterprise... well... the less said about that the better. In terms of movie themes, I agree totally with walterIsTheMan in that First Contact had an excellent theme, although having played Generations in a full orchestra, I can definitely say Generations has hands-down the best theme of all...
Jayne - Ain't logical. Cuttin' on his own face, rapin' and murdering - Hell, I'll kill a man in a fair fight... or if I think he's gonna start a fair fight, or if he bothers me, or if there's a woman, or if I'm gettin' paid - mostly only when I'm gettin' paid. But these Reavers... last ten years they show up like the bogeyman from stories. Eating people alive? Where's that get fun?
Kaylee - Shepherd Book said they was men who just reached the edge of space, saw a vasty nothingness, and went bibbledy over it.
Jayne - Oh, hell, i've been to the edge. Just looked like... more space.
      - Serenity

Enterprise. *ducks to avoid rotten vegetables*

Seriously though, I think Voyager had the best theme.

I liked them all including the Enterprise theme (although I prefered the slower later version). I would rank them....
            1) DS9
            2) TNG
            3) Voyager
            4) TOS
            5) Enterprise (slower version)

I know I am going to busted in the chops for this, but this is only because I listen to a lot of music.

ST:TMP had the best theme music, simply since most of the actual themes throughout the ST universe were spawned from this soundtrack. TNG uses the exact same music from this soundtrack, so IMO it doesn't really count.
ST:TOS Same reason. Alexander Courage and Sol Kaplan did some great work with TOS.
ST: II through First Contact because James Horner, Courage, Goldsmith, Rosenman, and Mangini did awesome work.
              ST:Insurrection
              ST: DS9
              ST:VOY
              ST:ENT
ST: Nemesis would be last because almost all the music was "borrowed" from previous films. Re-used, the end credits and opening sequence were the exact same music from earlier Trek movies.
All posts are IMO, I am not a rocket scientist.

The music of TMP is a masterpiece, quite possibly Jerry Goldsmith's best work. As much as I enjoy James Horner's themes from II and III, the main title theme from ST: The Motion Picture heralded a new age of Star Trek that persisted for 25 years. It's a delightful score, eminently listenable, and capable of evoking the mystery, tenderness and sublimity of Trek's only serious film.

I'd say DS9. ENT was alright cos it was originally done by the mighty Rod Stewart!!!! I quite liked Voyager too. DS9's still my favourite though.

Hmm, there are so many levels here.

Of the TV series I believe Voyager had the best instrumental theme music. It was very elevating and sweeping. The trumpet part wasn't overpowering, and it was almost majestic.

-However, I would like to plug my support for Enterprise. I think most people shake it off too easily because "OMG IT HAS WORDS!! WHO IS SINGING THIS! THIS IS TERRIBLE!!"
                      Wrong.
Russel Watson's voice served the feel of the show much better than Rod Stewart's original recording. And, more importantly, the WORDS, and MEANING behind them totally, TOTALLY fit the theme of the show, and blended PERFECTLY with the opening credits' art and clips. It showed mankind's perserverence, and humanity's steps of progress, showing that those that have faith will succeed, and if people have faith in mankind, maybe awesome things like starships will happen.

As for movies, I've always been a huge fan of ST:VI The Undiscovered Country's soundtrack. I love it. I have the CD, listen to it often. The ST:6 Suite is a beautiful piece of music. Honorable mentions go to Generations and First Contact, and Voyage Home.

Yes Enterprising theme was moving and it had words and such. But when I think of Trek themes the only one that comes to mind is Voyager. It will always be my favorite them. Not my most favorite series, but second favorite.
                        ...it never ends.

DS9, but I am kind of bias because DS9 is my favorite series. However, I like the earilyer slower version than the faster version.

While I also like the slower version than the faster version, I feel it was a suiting change. The original theme was a solo (trumpet I think, or FH) and in a way that kind of signified DS9 being this lone station in the middle of nowhere. At the point at which the music changed, DS9 had become much more influential in the grand scheme of things, especially with the Dominion War. So the music became more grand to suit the change of the stations role.

My favorite ST theme is DS9, probably the slower version, if I had to choose. The emotion it evokes, the overpowering loneliness of it, is breathtaking. (The middle section is also a French horn/euphonium duet, which is very exciting for a euphonium player. You almost never hear euphoniums in an orchestra, unless you're listening to Holst.)

As for the Enterprise theme – it's a great song. I went around singing it for weeks. But as a Star Trek theme, I hate it. The big, sweeping orchestral stuff was kind of a tradition, and the ENT theme only served (IMHO) to further separate it from the other four series, instead of tying it into the larger story. I think Enterprise would have been a great show if it stood on its own; I just don't think it was good Trek. Same goes for the main theme.
