To me i find that there are different 'attitudes' in a war namely:
    -Aggressive
    -Defensive
    -Tactical

If you are defensive and fighting an enemy that really really outnumbers you then its quite likely you will lose because no matter how 'advanced' you are, your defenses will break faster then you can replace. Thats how I see the atlanteans, not only that but while they had enough of a population to 'seed' the galaxy with life and man some starships i just think there numbers were very very few (comparison, say there are 100,000 wraith there would only be 100 atlanteans). So they relied more on automation to control their empire.

'Great holy armies shall be gathered and trained to fight all who embrace evil. In the name of the Gods, ships shall be built to carry the warriors out among the stars and we will spread Origin to all the unbelievers. The power of the Ori will be felt far and wide and the wicked shall be vanquished' -

Church: Nope, no matter how bad they seem, they can't be any better, and they can't be any worse, because that's the way things f***ing are, and you better get used to it Nancy. Quit-yer-b****ing.
