Daniel: Their whole world is in flames - and we're offering them gasoline. How does that help?
Teal'c: We are in fact offering water.
    Jack O'Neill: Thank you.
    Daniel: I was speaking metaphorically.
Jack O'Neill: Well stop it. It's not fair to Teal'c.

i wouldn't say they were all obsessed with the 50's, but it does seem they like using mid 20th century and 19th century.

maybe it is lack of imagination, but considering everyone would probably want to take part in a fight against klingons with Kirk, i guess its a good thing they go back before our time

it would have been nice seeing something like the Enterprise finale, the holideck being used to show moments of federation history and expanding the ST universe

well there's so many topics they can discuss in the 1950's as well. Many more issues and taboos than there are these days.

Of course, the real reason is it was considered the US's Golden Era, so really the obsession with it is just a reflection of the mindset of the writers.

Archer: Lieutenant Mayweather tells me we'll be arriving at Kronos in about eighty hours. Any chance he'll be conscious by then?

Phlox: There's a chance he'll be conscious within the next ten minutes... just not a very good one.

So true... and it did make for good tv. God if they'd been obsessed with other periods in time the storylines could've been pretty lame. *shudders*

Although one of the funniest episodes (IMHO) was the Robin Hood ep in TNG... curse my defective memory... what was it called?

"Qpid". Yeah that was pretty funny. Troi shot data with a bow and arrow. Q screwed around as usual. Good fun.

Ah yes! And of course, Worf does his famous "I am NOT a Merry Man" diatribe, and of course my favourite bit is when he bashes Geordi's lute to bits, then says, "Sorry".

    Is this a US reference?

Oh sorry, US and Canada I guess. There's a common commercial where this guy comes out with a guitar and starts playing this somewhat nice, yet incredibly annoying song, and then somebody else comes, grabs the guitar, and smashes it to pieces. I'll see if I can find a clip online.

EDIT - Can't find a clip, but I think that ad only ran in Canada.

There's a similar ad here, but it's for a travel agent. They're all ripping off Star Trek, clearly.

yes the holodecks were used quite alot i must say, but if i had one lets just say the outside world may never see me again,

its one of treks best contributions to sci fi that and the transporter of course, but i would have loved to see after the 20th century perhaps what affects the third world war had on the human race,
the story line could have been:
VOY- the doctor materialises on earth just after the first strike has ended, he cannot escape the holodeck due to a malfunction and is trapped in a world the people are ill or dying he is a hologram and can treat them for a while, but one by one they die as he gets to kno them and we learn more about the tragic events of WW3 as the crew of voyager try to end the program and salvage the doctor the holodeck fully intogrates him into the system and he begins to fall ill but he must try to cure as many as possible as the world becomes a death zone, his program begins to malfunction and he belives he is a doctor of that time and pledges to help them escape the fall out, martial law grips the states and he must save them but there are taken to a missile silo that is safe from attack but there the people want to use the weapons to strike back the doctor tries to stop the bloodshed and end the war, the story cuts to him months later as he is dying to reach for the stars and so a plan is formed to build a ship that yes you guessed it become the first warp vessle of mankind, but of course isnt built but he gave the idea and dies,
only to emege in the sickbay and a doctor of the federation confused and with a simple memory of his past life, he comes to terms with the past few days inside the holodeck and takes comfort in the fact that even one man could have changed the course of history and in fact one man did just not him, but the result saved the human race and in turn led to the human race as it is now but with a cold reminder of if the human race did not stop to think of a way to stop the bloodshed and save as many as possible the self destructive behaviour could have been the be all and end all.

ok a bad storyline but it would be very interesting to see what exeaclly transpired in the months before the "pheonix" was thought of and the hope that one man gave to the entire human race against all the fighting.
For all the pollution woes on Earth, will the Human race end up taking those problems into space in the future?

We can all call our ships Sports Utility Ships to curtail the carbon emissions and hypersleep at night

IMHO I think they do a lot of the early 20th century stuff because it is alot easier to do and does not cost as much to do because not much has changed since then except for some of the technology and buildings.

The Holodeck feels a little to me like a cheap way of engineering plots. "Oh hey, we have this magic room we can do anything we want in..."

At least on enterprise they had real entertainment like movie nights lol,
