Too many earth based episodes ?? (Spoilers)

looking at the guide on gateworld, 6 of 14 episodes this year are earth based.. i know theyve got to do that to keep O'Neill as a major part of the show, but for a show that is about a circle that can transport you to other planets.. staying on this planet so much is a bit pointless and against the very point of the show

Saying that though last season and the opening 2 eps of this season have been a huge improovement, so im still hopeful they can make these episodes worth it

If I was given unlimited resources I'd have no more then 1-2 earth based episodes. Atleast not the main plot.

Morjana has a nice list somewhere with a breakdown of Earth-based vs. Space-based eps of Stargate over the years. It always SOUNDS bad until you see the list. Or that's how I remember it anyway.

There do seem to be a lot more two-parters, though, over the years.

The problem with going off-world is simple, it's expensive.
But that doesn't change the fact that I think:
          The more off-world, the better.

By the way, the my 101st post.
I'm a 'Jaffa Warrior' now, which means I don't get shot at begining but at the end.

Yah, although i have no problem with either off or on world episodes, i think there should be a balance of each, because sometimes i can get sick of 'not' seeing one or the other

It'll depend on whether the Earthbound eps *feel* Stargatey or not. I wouldn't want too many eps like Sight Unseen, Nightwalkers or Resurrection, with no exploration and leftover conspiracy theories from X-Files. Some of the Earthbound eps have been really super though - Solitudes for instance and Matter of Time were really good SF with great plots.

Yeah. As long as the Earth based episodes aren't some recycling of plots found in other Earth based science fiction then I will be fine with them. A Matter of Time was great, if they can do S8 Earth plots like that I will be pleased.

If they were able to afford 18 or so episodes in season 1 based mostly offworld surely they can do it now

I think the Earth episodes are great. It just offers some variety.

It is good to deal with the politics and other issues behind the Stargate once in awhile. It makes for a more stronger show and adds a lot more character as well.

Episodes like "Inaguration" and "Disclosure" show what the government is doing in regards to the Stargate program and that gives people a broader spectrum on the show.

Besides if it wasn't for earth episodes we wouldn't see Senator Kinsey, which in my opinion is one of the best actors on the show. He is really good at being an a$$.
Lt. Ford to Dr Zelenka: "Is this some sort of payback for me beating up guys like you in high school?"
                    - Stargate Atlantis: Season One - Hot Zone

Dr. Beckett: "...Mom...I miss you terribly...*breaks down*...I can't do this!"
                    - Stargate Atlantis: Season One - Letters from Pegasus

Sen. Kinsey: "Do you trust this man?"
                    Col. Jack O'Neill: "...No..."
                    Mayboune: *shrugs*
                    - Stargate SG-1 - Chain Reaction

Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis I love science fiction

That's very much an issue of personal taste, I reckon. I know there are people who like to see the big picture and who feel that since the government is involved in the Stargate programme the show should have episodes about politics etc. It's really not my thing though. I don't really care how the SGC is funded or who's trying to wrest control from whom, I want to see SF. I want to see exploration and New Stuff.

It's completely possible to include politics and a dash of conspiracy in a 'normal' Stargate episode. The best example I can think of is 2001, which was a super episode with all the SF, exploration, edge-of-seat tension and heroism which I love to see, but also had Kinsey being all Kinseyish.

I'm hoping the Earthbased eps will be more about stuff that comes through the Stargate or problems the SGC faces that are connected with the Stargate, rather than political maneuvering.

Spoilers for Zero Hour and Covenant...

The Clip on Conan showed some offworld action on Zero Hour with Carter shooting enemy Jaffa...

                        and...

The X302 is used in covenant, so it isn't completely Earth-based...

I for one like the earth-based episodes. They do over a nice change of pace and I find that it helps explore a character better than if they just went off-world every single day. But I might be biased, seeing as I live in Colorado and like to see them try to make Vancouver look like Colorado Springs.

I don't care if they're off-world or on, as long as the episode advances the story of Stargate SG-1 or enhances the characters so that they can further advance the story.

The off-world eps tend to be more expensive because of the generally more elaborate sets, locations and/or VFX usually required. An on-world episode can use the existing standing SGC soundstages, although not always (Resurrection, Nightwalkers, etc.)

                            - RDA, Stargate SG-1: The Lowdown

some assembly required, batteries not included, action figures sold seperately
                            once done, cannot be undone...
