    Clothe Teyla Fund!

I say we raise money to send to TPTB so they can pay off the wardrobe department to get Teyla some REAL clothes!

This is a slightly irreverent thread, yes, but there's a bit of a point to it, too: I'm tired of seeing Teyla being paraded around in skimpy clothes that show off as much leg as the Broadcast Standards & Practices people will allow. I know her training outfit is supposed to be some kind of Traditional Tribal Outfit, but isn't it possible that a Traditional Tribal Outfit might have some actual material to it??

Teyla has also been spotted numerous times wearing the Traditional Atlantis Uniform, which is much more conservative and, IMO, practical. I like her better when she has some clothes on because it helps to reinforce the idea that she's an actual character with depth and meaning and not some silly alien sex kitten.

I understand that MGM (or whoever) wants to enhance Teyla's alien-ness, but they seem to be "enhancing" certain other parts of her, as well, judging from the promo shots. Her leg sticks out in every shot and she does the chest thrust in a few, too. What happened to treating her like a serious character? I'd also like to point out that Teal'c, who is ALSO an alien, is generally dressed in the Traditional SG-1 Uniform in the promo shots and not in his Traditional Jaffa Gear. So why the double standard? Hell, strip the man's shirt off and have him in Traditional Kel'no'reem Garb. You can't get much more alien-looking than having a big freakin' pouch in the middle of your stomach! But I digress...

I haven't really warmed to the character of Teyla. Most of that is the fault of weak writing on TPTB's part but another part of it is that ridiculous training outfit of hers. They keep finding excuses for her to wear it and excuses for her to show off LOTS of leg and then there's the whole chest thing and really, people, can we remember that this is supposed to be a scifi action show and not softcore porn? You aren't on Showtime anymore.

I'm sorry. I know I'm probably over-dramatizing this, but it really bugs the hell out of me to see Teyla (and Rachel) being used like that. Teyla can still be an alien even if you can't see her bare thighs. She doesn't need to wear an alien sports bra for us to know that she's a tough fighter. How about focusing on the CHARACTER instead of her gender? Yes, she's a woman and yes, we should know it, but it doesn't have to be THAT BLATANT. You don't see Weir running around in a tube top and a miniskirt, do you?

So please, guys (and I do mean guys) can we put some clothes on her and get back to work??

I think the kind of point of Teyla wearing those skirts and stuff and having her hair down when training is, 'If you can fight in this, you can fight in anything.'

      LOL

      you go girl!!!!!!!!

I think maybe that's why i haven't warmed to TEyla either. I simply can't take her seriously at all when it's so massively obvious she's there solely for the T&A factor.

if they want to sex it up, why can't we simply have bimbo of the week?

In one way, i think that's why i'm nothing more than a casual viewer of Atlantis. Yes, ,the show is better than stargate. It's obvious where all TPTB's money and attention is going, but the two female characterrs in it are seriously lacking

Weir is little more than Hammond with hair. She's a part time player who does little more than give or deny permission, as the plot demands. It has been proven that she CAN do good work, Before I Sleep is a fantastic episode. However she's so maternal that she just doesn't appeal to me

TEyla....well how can i identify with someone who's there for scenery's appeal? To me, it totally lessens her as a serious character.

*grabs for my wallet and tosses a couple of bills into the jar*

for god's sake, please put the poor woman in some clothing. If winter ever comes to atlantis, she's gonna catch her death

I agree wholeheartedly! I thought they'd gone as far as they were going to get last season with the crop-top. But then they go and give us the 'sophisticated cavewoman' look. They should be uncovering new aspects of her personality, not her!

I think she had plenty of potential as a member of the Atlantis expedition, and could be an intriguing character. But is it within the abilities of TPTB to use a good looking alien woman as anything else other than eye candy? I'm beginning to wonder.

I can understand wearing training outfits when stick-training in the gym, but how is it advantageous to be wearing a long skirt when fighting? All I can hope is that the latest photos show her at her highest degree of scantily-cladness (what a word! ). You have to wonder where she gets those outfits from. From her grandmother?

Granny Athosian: Here, Teyla. I made you a new outfit using spandex, harvested from our alien spandex-cows. I realise it's quite revealing, but I think it'll increase your chances of getting lucky with that ferris wheel lad.
Teyla: Oh, Gran! You don't have to keep on encouraging me to pair up.
Granny Athosian: Nonsense! You're past twenty five now, and you're not getting any younger.
Teyla: Don't worry about that, MGM will pay for my plastic surgery to keep me looking like this forever!

How about an episode where they do get back home, and Teyla is introduced to the wonders of ponchos?

I'm sorry you dislike her clothes but I"m a woman and still think she looks great and like the fact she can try other clothing styles and Teyla is an attractive woman ..
IMO if Sheppard wants to start showing off skin I'm all for it and would REALLY ENJOY it so I"m for fair play
If Teyla can add the sex appeal for them men to watch by all means do Sheppard for the women

I say if you got it flaunt it! lol

Whether a character is completly covered up or not shouldn't detract from the character and the stories that are being told

I'm so with you on this, Shadow. Teyla's wardrobe is ridiculous to the point of being distracting. It's bad enough that she only figured out how to pull her hair back in the last episode of the season.

Of course, the techological level of the Athosians is inconsistently represented, and her clothes don't help. Why do the others look like cave dwellers and she's in a rutched top of some iridescent fabric with grommets? And the fact that she can't manage to pull her shirt down over her stomach really doesn't help her look like a mature leader of her people.

And the "training" outfit... I'm honestly surprised that Rachel Luttrell hasn't hurt herself in that thing yet. When you're trying not to get the crap beaten out of you, the two things you don't want are hair in your eyes and mouth and clothing you might trip over. And the amount of exposed skin is just stupid. Clothing is there to provide some measure of protection. She should have scars all over her arms and legs if she plays with knives in that routinely.

Think maybe she took the saying 'less is more' the wrong way?

LOL When I saw this thread title I laughed my butt off! I was re-watching The Gift and I was rolling my eyes every time Shep would hit her with the sticks and she would flip her hair around and grunt. I mean when you are exercising/fighting would it not be better to have your hair tied back?!? Then I started thinking about all the leg/chest she was showing (again major eye roll). I put my $$ in the jar with the rest of you!

Preach it, sister! My thoughts exactly. I'm putting some money in the jar and some of my scrunchies so the poor girl can actually SEE who she's fighting.

Oh, and she could use some shoes too. I doubt the floors in Atlantis are that clean after 10.000 years.

Poor Rachel. I wonder if she has ANY say in this?

In a world that seems to be increasing in conformity
it's harder and harder to be who you wanna be
It takes a lot of courage to stand up and get what you need
And lots of us are happy in a different kind of family

Better yet, did the stunt coordinator have any say in it, since his job is about keeping people safe during action scenes?

Incidentally, I had the same objection to some of the duels in the latest Star Wars movie (though that was far from my greatest objection to the movie). As someone who's spent a lot of time twirling around in gyms trying not to get beaten up, I'd like to point out that a big billowing robe needs to come off before the fighting starts, lest you trip over it or get whacked in the face with it.

hahahaha!! Oh how do I love you?!

I agree. It is a highly uneffective "gym" outfit. I mean, those little flaps would get stuck inbetween your legs as your move.

Plus, when wearing the uniform why not give her a shirt as well that would not reveal her tummy. So she works out... we get it!!

I like the gym outift, I would wear it for halloween but, c'mon, besides costume and big occassions wear something not so a-typical space!babe
