A totally incomplete and off the cuff listing of the top 5, in no particular order:

    Daniel Jackson (SG-1)
Erik (The Phantom of the Opera)
    Liz Parker (Roswell)
    Elim Garak (Deep Space Nine)
    Hamlet (Hamlet)
Sentio Aliquos Togatos Contra Me Conspirare

Okay, call me completely geeky, but I have to say Wesley from Angel.

When he was on Buffy for the end of Season 3 he was a complete dork! A jerk. He came over to Angel and evolve. He stopped being the dorky guy and got a little more serious. He got shot by a zombie cop, got in charge, got the prophecy, stole Angel's son, got his throat cut. Everyone turned his back to him and he turned kind of dark. An angst magnet.

And so on until he died... He's great...

*gasp* I'm flattered! You sure you didn't pop out of a book somewhere yourself? If not, I'll have to write one with you in it.

.. Oh! And how could I forget, Zorro!! Who's cooler than a guy in a mask with a horse who goes around fighting injustice and carving Z's into things! *thunk!*

Wesley was trying to do what he thought was right.

... It just didn't turn out to be the right thing...

But if he didn't, he wouldn't have been so angsty

                    Gotta love the writers.

Personally, I think that Angel is a far better show than Stargate SG-1. I love SG-1 but I never really get into the characters like the characters from Angel.

Some episodes of Angel have made me cry. I really felt for the characters. Hero, You're Welcome, A Hole In The World, and Not Fade Away always make me cry! I can't help it.

The only episode of SG-1 that I actually ever cried for was Threads when
                    Spoiler:
                    Jacob died.

Even Veronica Mars had me cry once (when they had the dedication for Lily). I don't cry for TV shows often.

Most of the times are for Angel. All but two of the times actually.

I also don't cry for movies that often. The end of The Fellowship of the Rings (when Sam ran after Frodo into the water) I cried. Also I cried at the end of Ladder 49. That was sad. And I cried at the end of Gone With The Wind.

I swear those are the only times that I've ever cried for a movie or TV show.

It takes REALLY good emotional writing for movies or TV shows to make me cry. And when I do cry, I have to just wipe my eyes and clap for a good five minutes.

I think that Angel had better writing with the emotional stuff than SG-1 has, and I'm going to be stoned to death now by some rabid SG-1 fans who disagree with me

Prince Corwin of Amber from Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber, Vols. I & II

He tried and succeeded in saving a world while creating his own as a byproduct. It's a good 10 book read for anyone with the time and notion.
