Default Asgard in Season 2 thread :D "spoiler"

Hi I was wondering what you guys thought of the new asgard Hermiod, as a new character in the series. I heard he will be recurring and will be stationed on the Daedulus and later on atlantis. So what do you guys think, I think this new Asgard will be very interesting. What do the asgard know of the wraith and the whole war. It will interesting to find out if the asgard ever went toe to toe with the wraith. Or if the wraith are like ancient enimies of myth to them. Very interesting.

he won't be stationed in Atlantis. Martin Gero already said that he won't be ... and Hermod might be the appropriate name since there is a Hermod in Norse mythology ...

Hermod is considered to be roughly equivalent to Mercury/Hermes, and was a "messenger of the gods". Now insofar as SOME of the aspects of the Norse Gods do seem to apply to the Asgard (Thor the Great Warrior = Supreme Commander of the Military, Loki the Trickster = Renegade Scientist), perhaps Hermod will also be a messenger or traveller.

I think they could have come up with a better name. This being my first post and all, I do not want to sound crass, but it sounds too much like hemorrhoid. I certainly hope that he/she/it is a worthy addition to the show.

Yeah, I'd say he's a traveller, he's the only one of his species in the Pegasus galaxy. I don't think the Asgard ever went toe to toe with the Wraith, as my impression was that they met the Ancients after the Ancients returned from Pegasus. But that impression may be proven wrong in "Avalon".

There were still some Ancients left in the Milky Way after Atlantis went to Pegasus so it's possible that the Alliance was formed by the remaining Ancients.

I hope this is the case and that Hermoid doesn't stick around. It would get real old if the Alantis crew just refers to Hermoid when they can't figure something out.

Don't forget though, The Asgard have been studying the Ancient database for as long as Thor could remeber & they have barely scratched the surface of it. So although the Asgard would be far more capable in deciphering the information, a single one will help gretly but certainly won't be figuring everything out on it's own for them. I would love them to add an arrogant one that would clash with McKay over who is the smartest, It would treat him like a kid, Don't touch this & don't touch that. Then he would always be off at Weir complaining & moaning as he knows everyone would be turning to the new Asgard friend for solutions as he is no longer the smartest one there. It can also do the same with people like Beckett, when Weir asks him to give a hand with their cloning problems, He could be examining it's physiology trying to come up with a possible solution & it can be arrogant as it thinks he's too less advanced & as they don't like to discuss their problems with outsiders. See Beckett trying to goade information from it.

Of course not forgetting that Shep could take it for a spin in the Jumper & give it it's own P90 & it can spar with Teyla using the Escrima sticks.

Well sopposedly Hermod flew apon the winged horse which was a rip of the greek "Pegasus".

Personally I wish it was Tyr God of war (Aeries/Hercules)or N'Jord God of sea (Poiseidon/Hermes), Hermod is a nobody in Norse mythology he only appears once in the tale of Baldurs of murder and his existence was from the Roman Period in germanic teutonic culture.

Tyr is significant in norse mythology he is the former cheif god then apointed god of courage bravery and war, Tyr was the patron god of Viking warriors, Tuesday is Tyrs day , The word middle aged western europeans the "Tuetonics" comes from Tyr. Tyr isnt a nobody he has a day of the week and even a culture of people named after him.

Tyr is different from mars or aeries, He isnt for bloodlust thats really Odins role , Tyr is more simular to Hercules that he is centerd around bravery, courage and honnor , Tyr is kind of Hector rather then Archilles , He will pound you but fare and sqaure. Tyr fought the giant fenris wolf which was one of Loki's *******ized off spring and it costed him his hand but he was the only one not even Odin or Thor brave enough to fight the wolf hand and hand try to wrestle him down eventually he was abled to bind him. I think this was early in the mythology before Thor got his M'Jolnir hammer from Loki so Thor would have had to wrestle the wolf without a weapon and didnt have the balls for that.Odin tried to chain the wolf but his attempt failed so he ran off and hoped Tyr would come through.

"Hermod" God of speed and endurance , Messenger of the Asgard.

"Tyr" God of war and virtue

Njord God of Sea and Trade

    Which one do you prefer?

Hermod and the Pegasus thing, is very fitting. I'm not sure I'd want the Asgard going to Atlantis to be too high ranking... after all, the more important folk DO have things they've got to be about back home. I think Hermod is a fine choice, and perhaps for the best. (who knows... maybe that's why the Asgard chose him... , besides the irony... )

LOLOL....some of those mythical names can be tongue twisters and or sound like something else..

I just love the fact that an Asgard will visit Atlantis or be part of the Daedelus crew or better yet a regular on SGA. Although the cost of doing animotion or whatever kind of special effect they use could get very expensive.

Hermod could be the Chevron Guy for atlantis.

They give Hermod a levitating chair he could be steven hawkins for SGA!

I hope they dont call him Hermoid unless they was intentional for one crappy Docter Mckay joke to point out how it sounds like Hemorroids.

Well if Mckay makes fun of Hermod I hope he makes a come back line calling him "Docter Macaw" which is a small Parrot perfect nick name for Mckay.

I didn't really picture Asgard sense of humor as so direct. It seems that it is more what they say by accident that's funny. I mean the only deliberately cracked Asgard joke was Thor in "Disclosure" to Senator Kinsey (at least that's the only one I can think of). I sort of imagine his jokes, if any, being unintentional.

Also, my impression with Daedulus is that it'll not be battleworthy if it survives, so he may be involved in the repair efforts there, mainly shield and hyperdrive, so that his recurring nature would be sort of like the Athosians: he's there when he is important to the episode.

Martin Gero said that the Daedalus would definatley be groued for the first part of the series meaning it would prbly be in need of repairs after the wraith encounter.

First, I don't see the humor in making fun of Steven Hawking. He is a brilliant man, who, despite having ALS, has beaten the odds.

Second, I don't think the Asgard have a sense of humor....I think we take some of the things they say as funny. Big difference. I just don't see them making "jokes". I do see them as impatient at times, like an adult, with an anoying child or sarcastic.

Third, Dr. McKay is not "crappy"......but that's just my opinion and of course, you are entitled to yours.
    On fighting:
Farrah: "A swordsman does not fear death, if he dies with honor."
Dr. Who: "Then he's an idiot."

I Wonder How Many Asgard Will Go With Col. Caldwell To Assist On The Way to Atlantis.

I Wonder If The Asgard Know The Ancients Took The City Of Atlantis To The Pegasus Galaxy 10,000 Year Ago???
